"Abroad, America's greatest source of strength has always been our ideals. The same is true at home. We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it; that if you adhere to our common values you should be treated no different than anyone else.

We must continually renew this promise. My Administration has a Civil Rights Division that is once again prosecuting civil rights violations and employment discrimination. We finally strengthened our laws to protect against crimes driven by hate. This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are"

Lt Colonel Fehrenbach (the $25 million trained & discharged aviator of 18 years) will be on Rachel Maddow when it starts at 11:45 pm (an hour from now) to talk about the call for the DADT repeal this year. McCain has already released a statement tonight opposing the repeal.

I like how BET aired the SOTU tonight...something Im sure they have never done until this President. Following the address, rather than airing the Republican Response, they had to get to an important rerun of "The Game". Way to stay neutral.

I would've done the drinking game had people been around. I probably went through half a fifth anyway.

---

I thought his responses to the whole Brown election thing were pretty well done. There were some pauses and responses to hubub in the crowd that were awkward, though, and the talk about trust and ideals and shit went on longer than it should have. For a while it reminded me of Carter's "Crisis of Confidence." May have been accurate, but came across as paternalistic.

Isn't it pretty common for the majority of people polled to agree with SOTU stuff? Not to say that they're mistaken in this case, but I seem to recall improvements like that happening the past several speeches. Most speeches of any kind, really, unless they're pretty horribly botched.

See, this is more populist garbage that is terrible for the economy. The government has always worked to prop up home prices, but that's not what we need. A house is not an investment, it's an expense. It's something that can be sold at a later time, perhaps for more than it was originally worth, but that doesn't mean it should be viewed as an investment. The housing bubble was created by people that thought homes were an investment.

Home prices need to fall. People bought overvalued homes. If you buy during a bubble, and the bubble bursts, you can't expect prices to go back up. They weren't supposed to be that high in the first place.

""Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections," Obama said. "Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that’s why I’m urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong.""

Quote :
"The shot of the black-robed Supreme Court justices, stone-faced, was priceless.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) stood up behind the justices and clapped vigorously while Alito shook his head and quietly mouthed his discontent."

You have to wonder if Obama, or any of the Democrats for that matter, actually read the majority opinion, or if they just went straight for the dissent. They know that they can cry "special interest" and most people will be duped.

what improving economy? You've got this notion that the worst is behind us. Something that Americans scoffed at last night when Obama mentioned it. That kind of rhetoric is guaranteed to lose him the election. The worst is not over. The worst won't be over until the zombie banks we are propping up have finally been allowed to die.

^i wouldnt call them zombie banks, many of them are making profits and have a bright future,
i wish they died though, but the fact is the bailouts have allowed to the economy to stabilize
is there still a risk of a double dip? yes, but its not as a likely as some economic recovery
on top of all the govt spending on jobs that will happen this year we're sure to see things get better
and obama will be there to make sure everyone knows he did it

Ahahahahaha

..........................

Wait, you're serious. These banks are insolvent by every traditional measure. The Fed created money to "bail them out." So, the banks have this newly created money in their electronic reserves, which makes it seem like they aren't insolvent. They won't lend it out though, because if they did, they'd be back to where they started. They can't lend, because they don't actually have the money. Lending is the only way the banks make money, so they're going to stay "zombie banks," and there's really no way out.

Now Obama and the Fed want to charge banks a fine for extra reserves. In essence, this is a "negative interest rate." I've long thought, if 0% interest rates are so good, why not take it to the next level and go negative? That would be even better - it would force banks to lend. Of course, if this policy were to actually be implemented, it'd be a disaster. The monetary base, that has been doubled, would make it into circulation, and we would see massive inflation.

" The Court’s ruling in Citizens United concerned the right of labor unions and domestic corporations, including nonprofits, to express their views about candidates in media such as books, films and TV within 60 days of an election. In short, it concerned freedom of speech; in particular, an independent film critical of Hillary Clinton funded by a nonprofit corporation.

While the Court reversed a 1990 decision allowing such a ban, it left standing current restrictions on foreign nationals and “entities.” Also untouched was a 100-year-old ban on domestic corporate contributions to political campaigns to which the president was presumably referring erroneously."

as long as the 'zombie' banks arent lending money and the construction industry remains a stagnate black hole, jobs and the economy will continue to suck.

Wow. Couldnt be more wrong. Ever heard on non-interest income? aka Fee income?
Take BoA for example, for 2009 they had net interest income of $48,410,000,000 and non-interest income of $56,833,000,000.

So its like what you said.....but the opposite.

The banks aren't going to make their money back on bad loans just from fees. That isn't enough to balance their budget sheets. They need the interest money to overcome that deficit.

Quote :
"Was Justice Alito's "not true" the subtler, quieter, more polite black-robed version of Rep. Joe Wilson's "you lie" outburst? The always smart and provocative Randy Barnett works out the parallels in today's Wall Street Journal, and finds that Obama is the Wilson-esque boob in this round, since (some of)* the [six] were at the speech as a courtesy to the president:"

Quote :
"For those who strongly object to the ruling in Citizens United and still do not see the impropriety of criticizing the Court this way, consider Rep. Joe Wilson's "You lie!" outburst during the president's address to a joint session of Congress in September. No one denied the right of a congressman to criticize the accuracy of the president's remarks. The objection was to the rudeness and disrespect shown the president, for which Mr. Wilson promptly apologized. So too should the president...The president fully expected that his hundreds of supporters in the legislative branch would stand and cheer, while the justices remained seated and silent, unable to respond even afterward. Moreover, the president's speech was only released about 30 minutes before the event, after the justices were already present. In short, the head of the executive branch ambushed six members of the judiciary, and called upon the legislative branch to deride them publicly...."

"If this is an indication of things to come, maybe there should be an official judicial response to the State of the Union from now on. Of course, it would come out months after the speech and be laden with footnotes. Which—after all the quickie liveblogging and vacuous official Republican response—might not be a bad idea."
