I have never had to go to an artist saying, "I have an idea that I want, but no images to hand you or real concrete direction." But, while I know what concept I'm going for, I don't have a clear mental (and especially physical) picture of what it will look like, because I'm nowhere close to an artist. So I know I can find a tattoo artist whose work I like, tell them what I'm going for and have them draft something. But then what happens if their vision isn't what I want? Do I just try someone else? Tell them I don't like that exactly but suggest ways to make it more what I want after seeing what I don't like? I feel like either way I'd offend them for not liking their work.

This is how I feel when dealing with our photographer at work. Sometimes I don't have a clear vision and he does a great job filling it out for me. Other times ... not so much.

when amna got this one done she went to an artist friend of ours and asked him to sketch out some ideas she had - same thing you're talking about...she had a concept but didn't know how to put it on paper. she picked one of the sketches our friend made and brought it to our tattoo artist

That one was not too much of a hassle to come up with (I like the sketch look) but if you have something like piddlebug came up with that is a different story. I only go to tattoo artist that have tattoos and are actual visual artist of some sort other than tattoo artists.

I want this in the middle of my chest, right above the end of my sternum, but I have a 6" scar in the way. It's from a thymectomy in 2005 (same incision as open heart surgery). I really can't think of anywhere else to put it that can be covered year round. One on both wrists would be cool but won't work either.
