Maybe it was just the 10 skulls at once, all I know is I had like 4 before cashing them in, it said "Skullamanjaro"..."Game Over", and said I had 25. *shrug*

I had my fill after 3 games. Final assessment - what I expected and its just not my cup of tea. I have a bout 3 months of fun each with Halo 1, 2, and 3, and for some reason I just find it a very bland and unsatisfying game. Its like every game feels the same. I like a varying experience like with BC2 with the load outs and destruction and vehicles. 5/4/2010 9:14:53 PM |

picked up a used copy of odst today from gamestop. after ~2 hours of playing the beta i'm very underwhelmed. the gameplay feels slow and the weapons seem underpowered. the abilities are fun, but the game just doesn't feel like halo to me. headhunter is a pretty awesome game type though.
also why the hell did they change the controls (again)
if anyone wants to play hit me up on XBL. my gamertag is "SNV" 5/4/2010 11:41:43 PM |

If you guys are having such a hard time with the controls, switch to Recon, it's the closest to Halo 3.

So let me understand this: if you have a code from MS, then you don't need a disc to play? If that's the case, I might want to buy one from somebody. 5/5/2010 3:19:38 PM |

Yes, if you have a code (whether from the Freinds & Family pre-beta or the Halo 2 loyalist giveaway) it lets you download the Reach Beta as a separate file that you can launch straight from the dashboard.
Personally, it's pretty convenient for me to not have to load up ODST every time I want to play. It also means that the game cache isn't cleared by ODST (i.e. recent films).
Good luck finding/buying a code. 5/5/2010 4:06:30 PM |

Well it isn't Halo 3.5, if that's what you mean.
It plays very differently than Halo 3. Sometimes it feels more like Halo 1 than anything, sometimes you glimpse a bit of CoD, Gears, and Shadowrun in it.
The beta is fun, but I'm more excited for what we'll see in the full game. Bungie does a good job of polishing the graphics and tweaking the gameplay for full release. This beta is mostly just a networking test. 5/10/2010 4:24:22 PM |

^^Yeah, this is nothing like Halo 3 (thankfully).
It's more like Halo 1 crossed with Shadowrun's mechanics. Which is kind of amusing considering that one of the lead gameplay developers for H1 also was a lead gameplay dev for Shadowrun. I've no idea if he was involved in reach, but I wouldn't be surprised. 5/10/2010 6:08:14 PM |

got a weird invasion glitch today while playing with my friend (he was my guest)
I'd die, and of course it'd wait for him to be safe to respawn me. Well he ends up dieing too. Normally you then respawn at a safe location. He respawns at the abyss (instant death for being off the map), and I still don't respawn. He then respawns at a safe location, I still don't respawn. He dies again, and then he spawns at the abyss, dies instantly, and then maybe, just maybe we both respawn. 5/11/2010 3:58:41 AM |

I guess what I really want to know is, do the marine weapons still suck balls?5/13/2010 11:50:52 AM |
Duncan All American 1442 Posts user info edit post |
Marine Weapons: - Pistol is awesome. My favorite gun in the beta. - DMR is great for medium to long range. Pistol is better for medium to close range. - The AR is much better than its Halo 3 version. A skilled pistol user can still beat it, but not by much. - The shotgun is NASTY. I think they increased the range and tightened the spread.
So, yeah, the Marine weapons are great. There's no shitty SMG, the pistol is the closest it's ever been to the Halo 1 death machine it was then. The DMR is great for headshots, but not as much of an all-purpose weapon as the Halo 2 BR was (which is a good thing).
Also the frag grenades, rocket launcher, and grenade launcher are pretty deadly. 5/13/2010 12:00:51 PM |
V0LC0M All American 21263 Posts user info edit post |
Do the weapons for the marines still sound like muffled toy guns (smg for example) or do they sound like blow your doors off awesome (like COD or GOW). 5/13/2010 4:13:44 PM |
Duncan All American 1442 Posts user info edit post |
The weapons sound much better. The DMR has a very nice crack, it sounds like a high-powered rifle should.
ALL of the weapon effects sound meaner. They have a deeper, more realistic tone.
Grenade explosions deafen you, leaving a muffled ringing afterwards.
I'll never forget how awful the SMG sounded, such a high-pitched popping. 5/13/2010 5:08:11 PM |

^ I think they're better than the selection in Halo 3. If you're expecting CoD levels of lethality I think you're playing the wrong game.
FYI, the last playlist has gone live.
Network Test 1 (or Generator Defense) on a new (gorgeous) map, Overlook.
Don't complain when the games are laggy for the first day or two. It's called Network Test 1 for a reason (which I assume is to test Firefight/Co-op networking without actually having to implement those features in the beta). 5/14/2010 3:46:49 PM |

The only weapon that's better than its Halo 3 counterpart is the pistol.
The assault rifle is a worthless piece of shit. 5/14/2010 3:50:07 PM |

I don't think the assault rifle does as much DPS as the H3 AR.

the guns in the reach beta aren't remotely comparable to those in halo 3 if we're talking tangible firepower except the pistol.

the needler is more awesome in halo reach. the shotgun is better in reach. and of course the pistol. The plasma pistol is slightly more useful. Covvy sniper thing is so ridiculously easy to get kills with they should maybe remove it from the game. Sticky gun > Fuel Rod Cannon. grenades are more useful, but seem less abundant. stickies also seem to be thrown slightly differently so that took some getting used to on my behalf (didn't take long for me to be better with stickies now than on halo 3, got something like 10 sticks my last covvy slayer game)
the ar is worse, the carbine is much better than whatever that covvy rifle is named, the BR >>>>>>>>>>>> the DMR.
Sniper is about the same, so are the plasma rifle, sword, and hammer. Laser is about the same but has different ammo#'s.
That's about all I can think of off the top of my head 5/14/2010 4:15:49 PM |
Duncan All American 1442 Posts user info edit post |
Mostly the same, but I'll add my own thoughts:
Better in Reach: Needler - VERY nasty, especially when you are Covenant and can use the Ghost Reticule Shotgun - Tighter spread, better range. I'll take it over the sword any day. Pistol - One of the best medium-range guns in the game. Not quite Halo 1, but miles beyond 2,3. Focus Rifle - aka the Face Melter. Combination of the Covie Sniper and the Sentinel Beam. Plasma Launcher - Lock on, then fire up to 4 homing sticky grenades. Great against vehicles. Grenades - WAY more powerful. Overpowered, IMO. I hope they tone these down or make them rarer. Plasma Pistol - It can actually kill now and the overcharged shot does splash damage. Plasma Repeater - Much better than the Plasma Rifle, closer to the AR. Grenade Launcher - I guess you would compare this to the Brute Shot. You have to reload after every shot, but the remote detonation EMP is deadly. It's also a 1-hit kill if you get a direct hit. Rocket Launcher - The blast radius is much larger. I think it locks onto aerial vehicles now.
About the same: Sniper - Might be slightly harder to use with the toned down auto-aim and the reticule bloom. Laser - Only enough ammo for 4 shots instead of 5. Otherwise the same. Hammer - Although if you have Sprint or Evade it's much easier to chase down targets.
Worse in Reach: Sword - If enemies melee at the right time it won't kill in 1 hit (similar to the sword clashes in H3). All you have to do now is melee again right after, but it's still annoying.
I disagree with: AR - I actually think it's not that far from the H3 version. If anything, it does more damage but it's the different melee system that makes you think it's worse. In Halo 3 you could put a few bullets into your opponent and then get a 1 melee kill. Now, unless you wait until their shield COMPLETELY drops it will still take 2 melees. It might have slightly less range (to make the pistol more useful), but I'm fairly certain it doesn't do less damage.
Needle Rifle - I don't think it's any worse than the Carbine, especially when you consider the supercombine effect of the needles on an unshielded opponent.
DMR - The BR could kill slightly faster, but you had to lead your shots and get lucky with the bullet spread. The DMR is a hitscan weapon (no leading required) and there is no spread since it's a single shot rifle (assuming you know how to manage the reticule bloom). I loved the BR but the DMR is much more satisfying to use at long range. The BR was too much of an all-purpose weapon, the DMR forces you to switch to a pistol or AR for close-range stuff.

Am I the only one who feels that a pistol shouldn't be the most powerful Marine weapon? I haven't played Reach, but reading these past few posts makes it sound like the pistol is the go-to weapon, as in Halo 1. 5/15/2010 6:06:35 PM |

Shotgun is my new favorite weapon. On sword base it's the best weapon you can have.
Pistol is probably the best UNSC "non-power" weapon.
Power weapons are things like shotgun, hammer, snipers, swords, rockets, etc.
Non-power weapons are of course everything else (pistols, rifles, needler, etc.)] 5/15/2010 6:06:47 PM |
