hahahah so we are getting all of this noise from you people when the drivers are getting an above minimum wage anyway? (yes i know minimum wage has gone up, which it shouldn't have, but that's beside the point.)

so what's your tip on a $12 pizza delivery with a $2 delivery charge?
i guess my point with the hypothetical is that there is some "total cost" that the consumer is willing to pay for a pizza delivered to their home, the delivery charge eats into that for the delivery driver, but as a consumer I don't really care what the guy who brought it to me makes at the end of the night.
^that's a stupid argument and is really just going to derail the already derailed thread.

I would give the guy 4 or 5 bucks (and depending on my state of inebriation I'd probably just round it up to $6 for the even 20) because I know how nice it is to be tipped well and conversely how shitty it is to be tipped poorly or not at all. all that's beside the point though, because I would never pay $18-20 for a pizza when I could get one out of my freezer that's almost as good and that only cost me $6.

Yeah the delivery charge doesn't influence how much I tip the driver, it just inflates the total cost of the pizza and makes me less likely to get one.

^I for one usually tip very small because the delivery charge has already pushed the price above what I'd normally be willing to pay for a pizza... plus I only carry so much cash on my person at any given time... an $8 pizza plus a $2 delivery charge means that the driver won't be getting the change left over from my $10. (Though nowadays I typically just order pickup, since places like Gumby's have pickup discounts and it lets me pay with debit... and I usually have my car with me more often lately)
I wish that weren't the case, too, because pizza delivery in a city can actually be very dangerous compared to almost any other food service job... a guy I knew in high school nearly got killed on a delivery job when some guy tried to cave his head in with a lead pipe. I'd gladly tip drivers a lot more than waiters/waitresses if not for the fact that all my paper money is being used to buy the pizza itself.
What would be nice to see is delivery guys with card readers. It's easier for me and the driver would get a big tip.

^ I hate that argument. If you're too cheap to pay for a pizza and tip, then don't order a pizza.
I delivered pizzas for about a year in Cary. For me to not cuss you out on my way back, the minimum tip is $2. A percentage of the order doesn't matter because no matter how many pizzas you ordered, I still have to drive to your house. I would hope to be tipped more if your house was far away, or if I had to walk up a lot of stairs. It usually doesn't turn out that way because people just don't think about it.
Once a guy called up who was a mile outside of our delivery area. He convinced me to drive out there anyway because he's such a loyal customer, etc. Ended up tipping me less than a dollar.
Also, did any other delivery drivers notice that people don't tip for wings? WTF is up with that. 3/14/2010 10:13:59 AM |

I WOULD TIP TEN MILLION DOLLARS, BUT SINCE TEN MILLION DOLLARS IS WAY TOO MUCH FOR A PIZZA, I WOULD NEVER TIP TEN MILLION DOLLARS.

That's what I want, pizza delivery drivers coming up to my door with card readers. Might as well just hand your credit card to one of the bums on Hillsborough.
I order online, but then usually tip cash at the door. 3/14/2010 11:42:45 AM |

i worked at dominos 10 years ago and we had card readers for the drivers. if they purchased with a card we had to slide it through the card reader. no one had a problem with it and it ended the problem of people using stolen card numbers.
you have always been able to order pizza for delivery with the card, and then write in the tip amount.

This assumes that I've planned ahead for the pizza ordering in some way...
If I'm ordering a pizza for delivery, it's already a given that I am either: At someone else's house without my car. Quite drunk. Both of the above.

You're seriously telling me that there are extenuating circumstances where you're forced to order a pizza and stiff the driver. WTF 3/15/2010 8:08:32 AM |

Those lyrics remind me of a story our Comp Sci teacher in High School (at Enloe) told us about his pizza delivery days.
He went up to make a delivery to a house and four guys opened the door and asked him to give them his money as they brandished knifes.
His response was to back off while pulling out his own switchblade and stating "You guys can take me down and kill me, but I'm taking at least one of you with me when you do."
They backed off and paid for their pizza.
I wonder if Dominos has a policy about Employees giving their money to people who attempt to rob them (as in most retail outlets, etc)? What if you just got done delivering $20.01 worth of pizza and get robbed, do you have to pay back that?3/16/2010 12:29:35 PM |

Not when I was there that I recall. When it came up, it was just a common sense thing kinda like "it's not your money, don't get hurt for it". 3/16/2010 12:44:24 PM |
