So there were free peaches? Im ok with blocking the tunnel as long as there is free fruit.

(Not really...stupid protest, and the cops not breaking it up when it obstructed peoples' way to get around campus is beyond ridiculous.)

What do you expect when we're a university that paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to have a "cultural sensitivity audit" done on our campus

Who's to say the black kids didn't paint all that shit just to bring attention to their "cause". Blocking off a free expression tunnel which everyone paid to use is complete bullshit. These mother fuckers have no authority to block off a tunnel my tuition money pays for. I'd be surprised if no one tries to walk through the "blockade" and a brawl starts up. Then NCSU is on the news for hate violence and race riots. Gawd damnit we live in such a pansy nation

One of the more stupid things about this whole situation...

The University not only allowed it, but they gave these fucktards a permit to blockade the tunnels

Quote :
"i don't think it should be okay for them to "block off" the tunnel, but the permit they obtained through the University said they could do so, so they are."

pretty much everything is a continuum

it's a "Free Expression" tunnel, but if somebody went there every night and painted the whole tunnel with murals depicting the gassing of Jews at Auschwitz, that obviously wouldn't be cool

it's just a case of where to draw the line

personally, I don't think writing "nigger" crosses the line, but that's the point...there is no line

however, NOBODY has the right to block all traffic through the tunnel...you don't have the right to inconvenience random students just because you're pissed off

The AASAC decided for the whole school that "nigger" is absolutely crossing the line.

No one else gets a say though.

but of course, blocking off a public thoroughfare to all traffic was NOT crossing any line

I wish I could draw lines so neatly

NCSU is the only school I ever went to that had overt acts of racism
UNCA never had anything like this - people just wouldn't have tolerated it
then again UNCA was also #2 on David Duke's list of best colleges for "white folk" because it isn't very racially diverse - but seriously people wouldn't tolerate it there

As far as free speech goes:

You can SAY whatever you want but painting "nigger" on a wall is an anonymous act and doesn't come with the same consequences that speaking the word in public does. I invite these cowards say this in a public forum. I'll provide a microphone.

Also this particular word is linked to a history of violence and seeing it reminds people of those violent acts (lynchings were still happening within many people's parents' lifetime). Free speech does not extend to threats of violence.

spray painting the word "nigger" is not an act of violence, a threat, or inciting a riot. Outside of those few restrictions free speech is absolutely guaranteed. If you are incapable of dealing with speech you disagree with then you miss the whole point of freedom of speech.

Yes, racism is abhorrent, but damn right the KKK should be allowed to rally, hell yes Louis Farrakhan should be allowed to spew hateful garbage, Jesse Jackson's heimytown comments should be allowed, and some redneck spray painting "nigger" on a wall specifically designated for free expression should be tolerated.

^^Yup. State has a problem. And I suspect that's part of what these protestors are reacting to. It's not just the words on the wall...it's those words combined with a bizarrely backwards campus climate.

I suspect there was a better way for the protestors to deal with the hateful speech in the Free Expression tunnel, but I honestly don't know what that better way would be. In terms of effecting change, is there anything they can really do? The University has tried to fix this problem for a long time and totally failed.

Oh fucking please, what we have are not overt acts or racism. Spray-painting nigger on a wall is not an abomination to mankind, and it doesn't single us out over any other school, city, neighborhood, wooden desk, public restroom, or internet forum. It's offensive and it's bad but it's not a school-wide problem and both sides are overreacting.

Don't make a scene about it. Some guy with a spray can writing nigger in the FET is the ultimate troll -- he just wants to piss people off. If you don't get pissed of about it, that guy will probably give up. People buying into this is exactly what he wants. The terrorists have won!

People act like dudes with no prior inclinations towards racist behavior show up on campus freshman year and become cross-burners. Folks who were raised where the majority of State students are raised have a pretty high likelihood of being close-minded dumbfucks. Pretty much anything done by the university in the student's limited time here isn't going to change those attitudes. And I'm talking here about the kind of dumb shit who would spray nigger on a wall, not just Johnny Redneck.

This is of course assuming that the perpetrator was even a student, or white, or anything. State has no more a problem with racism than any other collection of 30,000 people. One guy with a spray can does not equal some racist pandemic.

^^It's definitely a university problem, and one that other universities do not have.

We protested the gays getting a couple offices to run their organization. We actually protested it and had dudes openly identifying themselves and explaining how they didn't want to pay for some "fag" house to hand out lube all day.

State is pretty bad off.

One fucking sophomore Eric Dobbins did

You find me another group of 30,000 people who are completely open to every whim of every minority

It's not going to happen, you're never going to get 100% acceptance. Be happy with what it is now, work hard to make it better; but don't act like every kid on Dan Allen is plotting to blow up GLAAD headquarters

I definitely don't mean that every student at State is backwards or that other universities don't have their problems, but there is something different about our campus climate.

I imagine my perception is influenced by the fact that I took mostly humanities courses...they required a whole lot of discussion about current issues, and people apparently felt free to express their bigotry. The online classes with required participation on message boards were the worst... And the casual conversations I had with people...Oh God... I hated class because of it. It's not just the racism or homophobia or whatever that bothered me...it was the thoroughly entrenched system of values and world views that these kids had...totally resistant to change and ready to get a degree and charge out into the world without having evolved at all. I've changed a lot, and I'm sure my peers did, too, but not on issues like these.

And discussions could never get good! If we had an interesting article to read about the treatment of gay teens in schools or something, we couldn't get to the meat of it cause first we had to let everyone get their religious stuff out and express their disdain for homosexuality.

^That wasn't their or my point. You are simply wrong to say it's an issue we have that other universities do not. We have a relatively tame "problem" (people who think differently than others, albeit ignorant and square) compared to MANY, MANY other universities. These are PETTY acts compared to what goes down elsewhere. That you think we have an elevated issue over other communities is the point of contention, and I simply don't think that's a fair or accurate statement to make.

^I'm not gonna ruin the thread by posting pointless anecdotes. We were ranked in a top-25 list of universities that are intolerant to homosexuality. There's a thread about it somewhere. Feel free to look it up and disagree with the methods.

^I was disagreeing with your blanket statement, not that of a methodical ranking system. However homophobic we may be according to unnamed internet listing, your blanket statement is still what we disagreed with. I'm not saying we don't have a problem, but saying we're the only one with a problem, or that we have the biggest problem, is just plain not true.

I don't know if you're a representative for the University or what. We got a problem, and it is worse than a lot of other campuses--that's why we were ranked higher than other universities.

In the future, I'll be sure to add in a bunch of qualifiers so I can hedge my statements for your approval. Still won't change the overarching point.
