Couldn't help but see this while reading this article:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/17/politics/congress-spending-plan/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Quote :
"But House Speaker John Boehner said Friday that any attempt for a short-term extension of the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits would get altered in the House, in particular by adding a controversial provision to speed government approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada."

Not to get into the politics of unemployment benefits or the payroll tax cut, but why the fuck is the Keystone L oil pipeline even needed to be added to the bill? What fucking relevance does it have to the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits? Wasn't it like 2 to 3 years ago these same people who are pushing for some unrelated provision to a bill criticized the bailout for adding unrelated provisions that should have been debated on separately in another bill?

What a bunch of fucking hypocrites. I can't understand how people continue to support these people...

The dem's point of view is that even if the president approves it the State department will hold it up.

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives was set to vote Monday on installing a bust or statue of Winston Churchill in the US Capitol to mark 70 years since his World War II address to lawmakers there.
The resolution, offered by Republican House Speaker John Boehner, states that the US Capitol "does not currently appropriately recognize the contributions of Sir Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom.""

Just so everyone knows... the Senate bill was passed with 89 votes. It did not contain any riders such as the XL Keystone pipeline or weakening the healthcare reform bill among other things. It is being held up in the House because a minority of Tea Party Republicans will not allow it to come for a vote. Because of them, Congress is failing to pass a bill that has broad bi-partisan support.

The United States has literally been taken hostage by a minority of House Republicans, the Tea Partiers. They are the reason for the debt ceiling being raised last minute, the reason the government was within a week of coming to a complete halt, and now are responsible for a massive tax hike to the middle class. The worst part is, it will get passed. They are just literally shooting themselves in the foot because they are playing political Russian Roulette with the United States as the stakes.

You're right, my fault. It left the decision to Obama to decide in 60 days. Either way, it's really a minor issue in the face of a payroll tax increase.

Sounds like the Republicans saw the economy improving, panicked and are now trying to find ways to sabotage it in order to make the president look bad. That has been, after all, their stated objective from day one.

^Basically this. 160 million Americans seeing a smaller paycheck won't help any of those "economic optimism" indicators, which is exactly what the GOP wants. Plus its also a progressive tax cut, and the GOP doesn't like any low/middle class tax cuts that don't also include a massive tax cut for the rich.

There are a lot of things in life to be optimistic about. The U.S. economy is not one of them. Nothing has changed. Every structural problem is still there, just bigger.

There probably is a political component to all of this. Make no mistake, though. We are not on the road to recovery. The Democratic party will not bring us out of recession. Neither will the GOP. Only structural reforms and the liquidation of debt will bring us prosperity, and only after a really shitty transition period. You don't want to hear it, I know.

It will require a reform administration to end this debacle. Obama isn't it. This bullshit dog and pony show, alleged gridlock, is intentional. It's window dressing, that's it.

Well, why don't you cry about it?!

Obama and the Dems have enabled this behavior by giving in repeatedly. If they had any balls, they would've nipped this in the bud back in 2010 during the fight over the Bush tax cuts. Instead, they folded like a house of cards, and the Tea Party had their playbook for getting what they wanted.

You're right. People shouldn't stay "in line", but it's the Speaker's job to know how many votes you have for a bill before saying shit that you end up retracting a few hours later.

Pelosi knew what she was doing and has bigger balls than Johnny "Soggy Eyes" Boehener.

Boehner is the joke.

There are many differences between a government budget and a household budget. The purpose of the comparison I posted was to reveal the true scale of the debt, the deficit, and "cuts". Without a doubt, you'd have the government print us back to a subsistence farming era if you could. Luckily, your ideology, having been proven dead wrong time and time again, is becoming irrelevant.

No one is pretending it's a household. We're acknowledging that the deficit (and the national debt) are out of control. These are issues that need to be addressed before bondholders get scared and we enter an era of draconian austerity with no time for preparation.

"GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa is one of the leading spokespeople for the Tea Party wing of the House GOP. With the national press continually asking King whether he’ll be making an endorsement in the Iowa caucuses, he has been built up into something of an important GOP figure.

So it’s good to see that King is candidly admitting that the House Tea Party wing has been employing the threat of a government shutdown as nothing more than a deliberate hostage strategy designed to wring maximum concessions from Democrats.

King made the concession in an interview with Laura Ingraham. Dems are highlighting the interview because King bashes House Speaker John Boehner for his weak leadership, but the bolded portion below is the real news here:

KING: We have not lead in a clear way. American people don’t know what House Republicans believe in, and they surely don’t know what we’re willing to fight for. And I am as disappointed as the public is...

It’s clear to me that Speaker Boehner made a decision, either before, but I am convinced it was at least shortly after the election last November, a year ago last November, that we would not be in a position where we would be blamed for shutting down the government ... that’s the only place where you bring the leverage to this Congress, to take on Harry Reid and Barack Obama, is you have to be willing to face a shutdown and you have to have the debate among the American people.

INGRAHAM: You think that would have helped the Republican Party and you guys would be in a better position today if the government had been shut down?

KING: The shutdown isn’t the point so much as, I don’t want the shutdown either. But if you are afraid of the shutdown you can’t have the confrontation and you lose every negotiation along the way.

And there you have it! During each impasse — the first government shutdown fight; the debt ceiling debacle; the payroll tax cut showdown — we keep being told that Tea Partyers really are crazy enough to allow the worst to happen. During the government shutdown fight, we were even told that Tea Partyers viewed that outcome as a positive. Their willingness to take us over a cliff is why Dems simply must make the concessions they’re demanding.

But now a top Tea Party leaders has given away the game, admitting that not even Tea Partyers want a shutdown. Creating the impression that they’re willing to let it happen is only about winning maximum concessions in negotiations. Let’s hope Dems keep this in mind the next dozen times this happens."

House Approves $310 Billion in Cuts, but Passage in the Senate Is Very Unlikely

Oh look a blog. Wait, when did Obama or any democrat submit his budget to the Senate?

Quote :
"Republicans forced the vote by offering the president's plan on the Senate floor.

Democrats disputed that it was actually the president's plan, arguing that the slim amendment didn't actually match Mr. Obama's budget document, which ran thousands of pages. But Republicans said they used all of the president's numbers in the proposal, so it faithfully represented his plan.

Two amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act:

Quote :
"One amendment, offered by Mississippi Republican Steven Palazzo, would prohibit the use of military property to “officiate, solemnize, or perform a marriage or marriage-like ceremony, involving anything other than the union of one man with one woman,” even on bases in states in which same-sex marriage is legal. Rep. Todd Akin’s, R-Mo., amendment would require the military to “accommodate the conscience and sincerely held moral principles and religious beliefs of the members of the Armed Forces concerning the appropriate and inappropriate expression of human sexuality” and would prohibit “adverse personnel actions” against them.

[...]

It’s a fight, in Akin’s words, against “[t]his liberal agenda” that “has infiltrated our military, where service members and chaplains are facing recrimination for their sincerely held moral and religious beliefs.” Akin claimed that raising “moral or religious concerns” about same sex marriage or the DADT repeal “have become potentially career-ending” for some chaplains and charged that Obama’s support for same-sex marriage “will only add fuel to this fire.”"
