ok, i was at father and son for first friday on the way to joie's apothecary ball downtown and i saw a bunch of hipsters there. i was obviously in their stomping ground, so i observed them in their natural habitat. i've got to ask tww's resident hipsters what the deal is with the hair.

it's cool if you want to dress in tight jeans and plaid shirts, but what is so hip about not washing your hair?

Once certain concepts of fashion and music have reached mainstream audiences, hipsters move on to something new and improved. Because of the rise of various online photo-blog and social networking sites, insights into urban hipster culture is reaching sheltered suburban audiences at an exponential rate. Cultural "norms" have been deconstructed by hipster culture as a whole. Hipsterism is often dismissed as just an image thing by some, but the culture as a whole is effecting changes in society, leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment in people who are no longer a part of the cultural ruling class. For example, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from culturally-clueless suburban frat boy types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can."

a lot.

a lot but definitely not all. I definitely have lots of friends I would personally describe as a "hipster" and I'm not friends with people I consider douchebags of course so take that as you will. Also, the biggest part I had a problem with is the part that tried to make it sound like "hipsters" were generally smarter/more intelligent than "normal" people. For every hipster the definition described as intelligent with degrees requiring analytical thinking, there are 1-2 kids who dropped out of college after 1 year and work as a bartender or barista. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but they aren't all MIT and Yale grads who decided they are more clever and culturally aware than normal people and are now going to choose to live this lifestyle.

For me this argument is always an interesting one. I kind of straddle the line because

1) I get annoyed at all the ignorant people I know who call anyone a "hipster" who is really into music, movies, and the local art scene
2) I also get annoyed at all the hate that gets thrown around just because some guy wears tighter jeans than some other guy and isn't into jagar bombs, cars, and nickelback like a "normal" guy
3) While I am not a hipster at all, I do have several friends who I would call hipster but are not douchebags but...
4) I also have known scores of douchey hipsters who really believe they are better and more "socially aware" than other people (the exact kind of person who would right the article entry you posted) and these kinds of hipsters annoy the piss out of me.

I'm kind of getting pulled in all directions on this

Either way that article, while slightly true in some parts, was definitely written by a hipster who thinks they are way cooler than normal desk-job worker drones.
