My buddy got strip searched at the Cancun Airport when we were on our way back from Spring Break because they found a pocket knife in his carry on bag. The very same pocket knife in the very same bag that he had no issues getting through RDU security. This was pre-9/11 though. I just always found it funny. 11/15/2010 5:44:01 PM |

It was one of those small keychain knives, and he had it on the zipper of his carry on bag. It was there when he went through RDU security on the way to Cancun as well and they didn't catch it

I've been through a few scanners. The last time I went through one I forgot I left my license in my back jean pocket and the person running the scanner freaked out on me and started yelling "what is in your back pocket?!?!" 11/15/2010 5:59:50 PM |

those "distorted" images become a lot less distorted if they look at the negative instead
also, once you begin screening, you're forbidden from stopping. you can expect a lawsuit from the govt if you try to leave and go home

I fly almost once a week and I cannot stand the TSA. Half of them take their job way too seriously (see Manchester airport) and half of them do not know what the hell they are doing. My buddy sent his bag through one time and the RDU TSA person didn't even glance at the screen because she was talking personal matters with another employee.
The new body scanners suck and take entirely too long. I don't care if they look at my weiner, they just need to hurry their act up. 11/15/2010 8:52:44 PM |

the part that I'm most upset about is that the "public outcry" won't change anything. people will lose interest and get used to it, and in a year we'll all be showing TSA our junk without a second thought. 11/15/2010 9:37:38 PM |

My wife went through one at RDU. Once she went through it, a TSA 'agent' walked up and started groping and pulling on her hair. She was like WFT? Why did I just go through a whole body scanner if you are going to grope my hair? Can't you see it is a few bobby pins? 11/15/2010 9:47:27 PM |

Somewhere in the thread it was asked what people flying on private jets have to do before they can fly. If they start enforcing these same rules for everyone, we'd be more likely to see changes to this current crap situation we're in with these scanners. More often than not, people with money have connections and know who can get things changed. 11/15/2010 10:09:16 PM |

There was one I went through up in Minneapolis, they reiterated three times that I had to make sure all my pockets were completely empty even though I had emptied them into the x-ray machine conveyor belt. So I gave them my chapstick, went through and it's actually not really all that slow. Slower than making it clear through the metal detector but not faster than the full body metal detector and the detector wand.
I read recently the government's doctors/physicians were saying it would take approximately a couple thousand full body scans to accumulate 3-5 equivalent chest x-rays per year, but the pilots union having their own doctors argue it was much more potent and was closer to 15-25 per year instead.
Also,
Quote : | "FYI flying in general has increased radiation due to less atmosphere above the plane to filter it." |
is true. I think the government report stated this cosmic radiation experienced commonly by pilots/stewards were more potent on the entire flight than the full body scans. This still boils down to a he said/she said scenario but one thing caught my attention. One doc stated it's not the amount of radiation you receive when you go through the scanner and it works correctly; it's the amount you receive if it works improperly.11/15/2010 10:19:21 PM |

Newer technologies require less scanning time, reducing individual X-ray exposure to .002 millirem for the entire process." |

^^^ i know you know, but in case it's not clear to the casual observer, merely being in an airplane at altitude exposes you to X-rays from cosmic radiation, and the back-scatter is a miniscule percentage of this. 11/15/2010 10:55:19 PM |

Also, someone mentioned 4th amendment rights earlier. These don't exist at airports, because all airports are considered border crossings. 11/15/2010 11:06:06 PM |
Gzusfrk All American 2988 Posts user info edit post |
^ I don't agree with you there. That's one theory on which you can justify tightened security, but it's not really a "border crossing" and not all travels are viewed that way. It's just a "border" for international flights, and that's where you butt up against the right to travel unfettered between the states. The actual legal reason is not that the Fourth Amendment doesn't apply, but rather that you've consented to the search by entering into the airport, and you are free to leave at any point up until you are in the midst of the search.

get over it...who the fuck cares? they will see hundreds (thousands, more likely) of people every day...my body will be nothing special, nor will they remember me 5 seconds after i walk through the scanner...i have nothing to hide and i really couldn't care less

Look, if it takes some ass hat looking at dicks and tits all day to ensure that Richard Reid Jr. doesn't smuggle a bomb wedged snugly in his anus and then blow up the shitty flight I grudgingly paid too much for, so be it.
A lot of the complaints, especially those regarding the pat down searches remind me of restaurant reviews people post on google or elsewhere:
They'll have one marginally bad experience, and then describe it as if they were eating in the lowest circle of hell, being served doo doo on a platter made of used needles. Similarly, for those who travel, one questionable move by a TSA employee during a search, and the person searched feels entitled to describe it as if they were strapped to a chair and fisted repeatedly as the other TSA workers sit and clap as a studio audience.11/16/2010 10:51:56 AM |

To be honest, one of my problems is that they always pull hot women in their 'random' searches. They always have, and now it just gets creepier with the body imaging machine. I guess its part of my protective nature and hate of creeps.
I'm not all that concerned with the groping (of me), personally. Its just as awkward for them. Now if it was a family member or child... 11/16/2010 11:48:02 AM |
