I do think a "sushi buddy" helps, if nothing else because they may have a better idea what suits your tastes. Certainly I am glad I went with a knowledgeable friend the first few times I had it for that reason.

I prefer sushi that focuses on the flavor of one or a very few fresh ingredients
rolls that are bogged down with fried shrimp and mayo and all that crap are good, in a junk food kind of way, but I don't consider them true sushi

Shit's been popular for decades. Not a fad.

I don't care much for it. I've tried it a few times and just can't get into it. Same with raw tuna.

I tried lionfish sashimi once. I flat-out didn't like that (although it's fantastic cooked)
