I used VITA last year...created a random PIN yyyyy...couldn't remember it when I was filling out this year's return so I looked it up on the IRS site. It gave me xxxxx...I used xxxxx and then got that rejection. I found my 2009 return and the PIN was yyyyy. Should I use yyyyy? Why does the IRS site have a different record then? 3/14/2011 7:32:19 PM |

I'm going to have to file an extension. I've been expecting a corrected W2 and still haven't gotten it yet. I don't want to file with the wrong one just to file an amended return later.
Anyone filed an extension? Is this a big deal or no? 3/31/2011 7:43:53 AM |

you're lucky - i go onto the website to check for my state return and it told me it was deposited to my account and to talk to my bank
(this is when i go to the NC State Return page - when I go to the IRS page it says it doesn't recognize my information)

Anyone get their state refund yet? I e-filed and did direct deposit on March 2. I know they took forever last year, just wondering how long I can expect to wait this year.

I'm not relying on it at all...but I get the "first time home buyer's refund" and I was going to do some immediate home additions rather than wait a year or two.
I'm getting around $8,000 back, and I've got about $2,000 spent in my head...going to sack the rest away to savings. 3/31/2011 10:58:41 AM |

You filed your taxes right away? I closed right before the deadline (went under contract in April, didn't close until late July). Unless I was going to file quarterly...it's not like it hurt to wait. Helped me budget a little bit in the beginning as well. I still had a cash nest egg to fall back on, but it kept me from spending like a crazy person on everything I wanted done right away.3/31/2011 1:23:36 PM |

I owed State last year so of course I had it paid in April. My girlfriend got like $2k back from State last year and didn't get it until August. They said on the news that it wasn't going to be like that again this year, but I'll believe it when i see it. They sure as hell didn't take their time cashing the check I sent them last year. 3/31/2011 2:47:53 PM |

If I've never claimed any of my student loan interest and decide to itemize this year, can I use the figure from "Total Interest Paid" ?
Or do you technically "waive" that each year by taking the standard deduction? 3/31/2011 6:40:06 PM |

Student loan interest is an adjustment. You dont have to itemize to take the amount paid as a deduction. You should go back and amend prior years to get the money you lost.
You will never waive your right to itemize.3/31/2011 8:14:41 PM |

Oh that makes sense. I actually even read that keynote and still overlooked it. Is it worth amending each year? I wish I could just enter the total in the one blank 4/1/2011 4:52:42 AM |

^ Bad idea. It might be the same amount of money, but it's not liable to be looked at favorably. Do the amendments, it'll be pretty quick. 4/1/2011 7:55:26 AM |

There is a statute of limitations on amendments. It gets wordy but a good rule of thumb is you are out of luck if it is more than three years. 4/1/2011 8:04:55 AM |

3 years after the due date of the return. You can still amend 2007 until April 15th, 2011.4/1/2011 6:54:25 PM |

this is a silly question, but I'm about to paper file my federal tax return. Do I have to include all my W2/1099/1098/receipts when I send it in to the IRS? I've always E-filed, so I never know how paper file supposed to work. 4/5/2011 12:27:01 PM |

I am guessing it has something to do with amounts. I got 100 or so back last year and it came fast. I was curious as to why everyone was bitching about a delay. This year I am around 1000 and it has been 40 days. 4/6/2011 11:21:16 AM |
