Gonna go hiking/camping/climbing at linville over New years, anyone know of a good source for routes in that area? Mostly interested in boulders and saw that pic last page.

^ For bouldering go by Footsloggers in Boone. They sell an awesome map of Linville Gorge with something like 500 boulder problems listed on it. Done by Joey Henson, a local legend. 12/9/2011 8:02:38 AM |

i'm starting to get incredibly frustrated with trc. there is really no good time to go, unless you don't have to work and can go in the middle of the day. we drive 30 minutes out there and there are no open routes/ropes to use. you have to line up behind people who roll 4 deep and stay in the same section for like 30 minutes. you're literally darting across the gym anytime you see an open section only to find you've been beaten there by some 12 year old or some fat ass who just took a class and wants to get their free 2 weeks of climbing in asap.

Just started climbing about 3 months ago at TRC and I don't remember the last time I've been this into anything! I've been going 3-4 times a week and would go more if I could. So freaking fun. I'm pissed I'm just now getting into this! 5/28/2012 11:32:56 PM |

Anyone climb who lives in Charlotte? Just recently started climbing and I've been going to Inner Peaks with some friends. We also started going out to Crowders mountain for some close-to-home climbs.
Anyone recommend a place to pick up a harness/atc and some shoes? I dropped by REI and Great Outdoor. I know they both stock based upon the area and Charlotte isn't exactly close to a lot of climbing. Inner Peaks probably has the best selection I've seen. I might just end up picking up a pair of shoes there.
In terms of brand what would everyone suggest? I have wide big feet. About 10.5-11. I've been looking at Five Tens and La Sportivas.
I also do a fair amount of backpacking so we're trying to plan some combined trips in the future.

I set at Inner Peaks. I'll be setting tomorrow from 11-5 and I climb there a few times a week. I'm the skinny dude with brown hair, usually wearing black board shorts that say Aloha on the back.
Jesse Brown's carries climbing equipment as well. If you have wide feet, I'd recommend Evolv, but it really depends on the shoe. Just go try a bunch on and see what fits you best. Tight, but uncomfortable. Misty Mountain is based out of NC and makes nice harnesses.

New River Gorge was AWESOME.
We went down to some of the routes on the river and the water level was so high we just had to swim and boulder with no belay. Next time we may rent a pontoon boat and belay from that.
Also finally got myself a hammock:
We did a bunch of the tattoo wall climbs.
-also did my first 2 5.10a's at Inner Peaks last night! (still fell a couple times).

Given the lame weather this weekend, it's indoor climbing time. Still mourning the loss of Vertical Edge.
Some folks are looking into starting up another gym in the triangle area to replace it, and we'd love it if some area climbers could take a minute to check out or market research survey. http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1120935/Climbing-Survey 1/17/2013 2:49:14 PM |

BUMP!!!
You may remember me complaining how I thought my fat ass was my biggest obstacle to improving. It still probably is, but my weight is finally headed in the right direction (down) while my climbing volume and difficulty are both headed up.
I've only been averaging about one climbing day per week + one day of hangboarding or a chin/pullup focused workout each week. Other work during the week is more focused on other stuff (mobility, presses, conditioning for weight loss).
The need to bump up to 2 climbing days per week is obvious. So while I'm surfing Ido Portal's facebook page he makes a pretty random recommendation to rock climbers:
Quote : | "1. Drop all your upper body pulling movements from your schedule for 30 days.
2. Drop all forearm and grip work from your schedule as well.
3. Schedule two indoor climbing sessions a week, it can either be just Bouldering or Top Rope or Lead if you are more advanced.
4. After 60-90 min of climbing, (depending on your capacity) and if feeling the need, add up some extra Pulling work on the rings, bar or Finger-Board for no more then 5 sets. The intention is to concentrate more on full ROM and quality.
5. Add a shoulder stabilizing prehab movement in the end of your session for 3-5 sets. Think retraction, depression, external rotation.
6. Continue with the rest of your schedule as usual, working your mobility, pushing work, lower body strength, movement practice, etc... " |
I'm probably gonna give it a try for a month, but does anyone else have thoughts??? Other program suggestions are welcome, I'm just looking to buckle down before the weather gets proper for climbing
The kinda iffy part to me is focusing all your upper body pull work after your climbing session. I realize the emphasis is more on ROM rather than strength building but its just hard for me to imagine being fresh enough or ,god forbid, my pull numbers starting to slip (they ain't that great to start with)2/18/2013 2:36:44 PM |

I'm taking a climbing break...which is hilarious since I live in Boulder. Prior to the break I mainly climbed indoors either top roping or bouldering at Movement Climbing and Fitness. I've done a bit of top roping in Boulder Canyon and Estes Park.
The other half climbs nearly everyday either inside or out. He's into sport, trad, alpine, big mountains, and soloing. Soloing does make me nervous but he's fairly well trained and knows his limits.
Someday I plan to climb the Flatirons here in Boulder...some day... 2/18/2013 4:39:56 PM |

^^^ok
Right now I'm climbing 5.9+ which is a full grade harder than what I was climbing as of that last post. My weight is still going down, I think I'm about 12 lbs down (will likely need to lose some more lol). I'm still only climbing once a week but my sessions and other workouts have been going well - I've actually improved stability in a shoulder that was kinda wack, and nursed back a wonky right middle finger. So I'm def. feeling optimistic about it all.
I'd still like to improve faster. The obvious problem is I need climb more often (duh). So my new goal is to work in a session at the NC State boulder wall once per week + my usual session at the rock gym. And kind of a volume focus in both workouts.
Weaknesses: Really steep overhanging stuff and pulling through roofs/smaller overhangs. Too often attempt moves statically instead of using a more fluid motion (These first two are related). Also slopers and tenuous footholds. 4/23/2013 8:49:02 PM |

some friends and I have been into indoor climbing lately. We've gone six times now, the last 3 have been on a saturday/wednesday schedule that we're trying to keep.
I felt like my best time was the first time. I did a couple 5.7s and a 5.8 cheating a little. Ever since though i've really been getting nervous up there. Like crazy sweaty and heart racing and i'm now like afraid to be aggressive enough to pull of moves. I've never thougth i was afraid of heights or anythign but it seems like i am. so now i'm just doing 5.7s and trying to overcome this. If i could lose 20lbs (i'm 6'4 220 now) and get more hand strenght i bet i'd be a lot better off. I just get so sweaty i freeze and then i hang out there until my hands die and i'm toast.
Meanwhile my gf is already doing 5.10s on her 5th trip. Jebus. 4/26/2013 4:27:16 PM |

^^K!!!
^it happens. I still notice myself griping a little too tightly when I start to move out of my comfort zone (taller walls than I'm used to, obvious situations where I'm going to swing if I fall)
Here is what helped me:
-take practice falls. Climb up to where you feel uncomfortable and slowly let yourself off the wall. Hang there for a couple seconds and just relax in your harness, stare at the ground and really soak it all in. Then get back on the wall, tell your belayer not to take in any slack, climb up a few holds and then just jump off the wall so that you have a bit of a fall before the rope catches you.
Make that a part of your training each time you go. If you do it twice a week I'm sure you will get a lot more comfortable very quickly.
-If you are really trying to send something (so a practice fall isn't an option) and you start to get uncomfortable, you need to just slow down, breath deeply and really be cognizant of how hard you are gripping. Find a rest (if you can), take a bunch of deep breaths, and then I usually look straight down at the ground. It usually psyches me up to give it one more go (well sometimes it does) 4/26/2013 4:56:51 PM |

Anyone at Inner Peaks in Charlotte yesterday? Some girl fell bouldering and missed the crash pad. Her foot was like hanging off with the bone sticking out. My girlfriend was right next to her when it happened and almost passed out.
Staff said it was the worst accident they've seen at the gym.
