Where I can fault Avent is for TWICE bringing in a pitcher on a 2-0 count. That's a hard thing to do, especially in that situation. Either yank the pitcher before the batter or after the batter, but not after you've put the reliever in a 2-0 hole. That was just asking for trouble, and he did it twice.

Are you guys surprised? I'm not anymore. It's like this feeling I can't explain when we have leads in games and they dwindle. Remember when we were up to Duke by like 19 in basketball this year and they cut it way down? That's how I felt yet somehow that one went our way. For every 1 of those there are 3 the other way. :/ I literally a make a list of nc state shit in second half of football, basketball, and baseball games that would bring back some terrible memories...but I won't.

Ps Between my two alma maters today there were 3 balks, 8 errors, and 9 unearned runs = losses to national seeds LSU and TCU. Fail at its highest level.

I think he should have kept Olzack in the 8th...but that's my only complaint. The kid was still throwing well, he was just surrounded by a bunch of idiots who couldn't filed a ground ball or catch a pitch. Other than that, no real fault to Avent on this one. After the dust has settled, seriously we need to make a change. 19 years is enough. He has had plenty of talent (Bates, Trea, Rodon, etc.). We overachieved this year, but last year was a disaster with 2 top 13 picks on the roster. Maybe the two best players in school history together and didn't make a regional.

In 19 years, we have finished ranked maybe 4/5 times so not sure how you get that. He has three Super Regionals and 1 CWS appearance so basically 3 Sweet Sixteens and an Elite Eight.

If you guys hated Herb, can't see how you love Avent. Making the tournament in baseball is much easier.

Making the tourney might be easier, but advancing is very difficult.
You can't compare the two sports.
Winning one fluke game in baseball isn't enough to advance to the next round. It is most definitely a tougher tournament in baseball than in basketball.

He has the 3rd highest winning % here. The other two, Esposito and Tanner.

Not at all. When you have been around for 19 years, you should probably have some really good things to show. Look I've said all along he has done a nice job, but we have clearly hit our limit. Why not move on to the next guy? We would be a nice job for an up and coming coach.

Tracy Woodson maybe? He built Valpo into a winner. Just finished 2nd year at Richmond already getting better there 28-25 this year.

I mean Richmond was 31-24 and 30-26 in the last two years under their former coach, but sure.

Avent does have good things to show, like the 2nd CWS appearance in school history and the highest draft pick in school history. Would it have been nice to have an ACC title or national championship to coincide with those? Yeah, of course, but there are plenty of teams with a couple first-round players that don't win titles as two players don't make a baseball team. 2014 was disappointing, but it wasn't a whole lot different from the 2012-2013 basketball season, and people have mostly stopped trying to run off Gottfried for only that reason.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Avent get the boot the next time we miss the ACC and/or NCAA tourneys (or even if we make the ACCT play-in game with a talented squad) but hopefully that won't happen real soon. He and Foxhall did a great job with the guys they had this year.

Can we start a credibility thread for individuals who insist on comparing the baseball tournament to the basketball tournament? They are entirely different.

There is a difference in liking Avent and appreciating the job he has done here with what he has. I am in the latter group, along with most of the actual baseball followers I know. We are in the bottom third of facilities IN OUR CONFERENCE, much less in the bottom third of the top 25 or top 40 or whatever arbitrary 'top' list the haters/supporters want to throw out.

Also, everybody was in lurve with Toman at Liberty and he didn't even make the tournament this year with the nicest stadium/facilities in Virginia.

So, yeah, good luck (a) firing Avent, (b) eating that contract, (c) finding a guy that wants to come to State/can win more than Avent with the same facility disadvantage, and (d) keeping that guy if he wins more than Avent. This isn't basketball where we have a cool place to play and history and fans. This is a job where you have to overachieve with what you're given and people will still think you suck.

^ Guessing you were referring to someone else further up the thread, but just to be clear, I wasn't comparing the baseball and basketball tourneys, rather the overall results of the 2014 baseball season with those of the 2012-2013 basketball season. We went into both with a lot of hype based on a few talented players and both seasons were ultimately huge letdowns.

Agree with pretty much all your points, though. I think I've seen more people trashing Avent over the past couple years than the number that bother showing up to most games at the Doak that aren't marquee matchups.

I think people that follow the baseball team pretty well have been upset with some things about Avent (the way the pitching is sometimes handled, and the love of bunting at any point in the game), but being upset with his overall performance is dumb as hell. Our facilities suck compared to teams like Clemson, FSU, UNC, UVA, etc. and yet we've hosted multiple regionals and one super regional in the last 10-15 years and won each time we've hosted anything. Being 0-5 in the ACC Championship game is frustrating, but with the way the tournament is set up you have to have a deep rotation or get really lucky in the final game to have a chance to win it.

The main people that get so vocal about ousting Avent are the ones who don't pay attention to baseball until basketball season is over. Going on PP and seeing all the "Avent = Baseball Sendek" posts makes me

I think if Avent were replaced, there wouldn't be much outrage, but I doubt there would be a ton of excitement for the new guy, even if it were Lou Piniella or Sparky Anderson's corpse or something. I don't think the majority of the alumnibase or students would really care unless we consistently made deep post season runs.

Tanner left because Turner told him the athletic department wouldn't spend money on baseball to upgrade Doak to a regional-hosting level. Fowler actually started giving baseball some money and upgraded Doak in 2004. Our first regional host was in 2003 and we had to use Wilson's Fleming Stadium.
