Got to use one of the tools of the HomePatrol "Extreme" feature set to map out GSK's EDACS system today:
So I am sitting at my computer at work this afternoon and going through some old radio related files and posts here at RR.com. I stumbled across an old thread in the NC forum where another local ham mentions the following local EDACS system that had not been mapped out:
Quote : | "Quote: Business Glaxo-Smith-Kline (RTP) WNYU273 This is an EDACS trunked system. 854.7875 855.8875 856.3375 857.3375 858.3375 859.3375 860.3375 With a PRO-97, it appears to do some tracking with the frequencies listed in that LCN order but I can't confirm it is the correct order or not
If any of you all can plug them in and play detective, I would appreciate it. If you can confirm something, share your results and, better yet, go ahead and submit them." |
For whatever reason this system ended up being forgotten and was never mapped out nor added to the database. Mea Culpa as I consider myself to be the top Central NC Scanner Geek.
Anyway, I decide to look up the system in the FCC Database and saw it was still active and on the air.
Since I bring my Uniden HomePatrol HP-1 to work with me everyday I decided to put the EDACS/LTR LCN Finder feature to work mapping out the LCNs.
Before I left work I programmed the system in and did a generic 1234567 LCN layout.
The RTP GlaxoSmithKline location in RTP is between my work and my home so I stopped at a Sheetz Gas Station in the middle near GSK.
In less than 15 mins The HP-1 EDACS/LTR LCN Finder had mapped out all but one of the LCNS for the system!
5 mins after I took the above pic the LCN Finder finally registered the last frequency of 858.3375 as LCN 4!
In about 20mins the HP-1 had completely mapped out the LCNs of an EDACs system and I was on my way to logging Talkgroups!
Of course as soon as I got home I added the system to the RR.com Database with a few talkgroups I was able to ID:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=7162
Of course the small 3 frequency Zebulon satellite site still needs to be mapped out but this shows how powerful of a feature the HomePatrol Extreme EDACS/LTR LCN Finder can be!
Hopefully this inspires the other HP-1 Extreme owners out there to give this feature a try as you too might be able to help map out unknown or forgotten radio systems in your local area!

I wish there was a way I could monitor the Clayton PD 1/5/2012 12:14:48 PM |
KE4ZNR All American 2695 Posts user info edit post |
^I can understand. I live in Clayton for couple years off Amelia Church Rd and had thousands of dollars of radio gear that was useless in monitoring their comms.
To be fair to JoCo here are a couple of my past statements on them using Provoice digital:
Quote : | "As far as Johnston County, I can't really ding them too much for going with Provoice. They had decided on an EDACS system years before VIPER was built out. They operated in analog mode for a bit then did the natural upgrade (for them) path to Provoice. It seems to work for them." |
and
Quote : | "Allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment: Why "Should" Johnston County have chosen Motorola Digital over MA Comm EDACS Provoice if the Provoice system gave them all of the features they needed at a price they could afford? Just because we as scanner buffs cannot monitor most of the counties radio traffic? Sorry but those in charge in Johnston County only care about Johnston 911 being able to hear the units in the field...Both Motorola and EDACS systems have positives and drawbacks...I know we tend to dismiss EDACS provoice systems due to the fact we can't monitor them in our hobby but when implemented correctly a Provoice system can be just as effective as a Motorola system...Do I wish there was a commercially available Provoice capable scanner/receiver? Of Course! However I will not let my frustration at not being able to monitor Provoice influence being fair when it comes to discussing Provoice systems..." |
Though as an SHP Trooper in JoCo said awhile back in the NC forum of RR.com:
Quote : | "There is no scanner currently made or no scanner that will ever be made to monitor EDACS digital. I know it's a bummer but you will never be able to hear those talk groups. Johnston only uses a couple of VIPER Talkgroups. JCC 911 for mutual aid between Johnston and Wake fire departments and VPRJCLAW which is mutual aid between Highway Patrol and Johnston County Sheriff or other Departments." |
and he has a personal reason for not liking JoCo's Radio System (Note: M/A-Com was the parent company that offered EDACS Provoice Systems for years):
Quote : | "Here is a REAL LIFE example of why I can't stand M/A-Com.
The whole point of building out these systems is to avoid the "patch" situation. If that is logical, then agencies may as well keep their old systems and patch them using an ACU-1000. I work in Johnston County. My primary radio system is Viper. Johnston County uses EDACS. I was in Clayton on New Years morning in a fight on the side of road with a guy I was trying to arrest. It was bad. I called for help and the only people who heard me were other Troopers, far away from me. There was a deputy in the store a mile away from me who didn't hear the call until 5 minutes later when our comm center called theirs. Tell me how that is a good thing because I'd like to know. If the SO calls for help, I may be right on top of them but will never know it because we have no way to communicate. The only way I can talk to Johnston is on a single talkgroup that only the dispatchers can hear. We need to be able to hear the deputies and police, and they need to hear us. That can't happen as long as they are on M/A-Com. Wish things would change." |

For those that monitor Raleigh PD on a daily basis you may have noticed quite a change in how the channels are dispatched that started today at 2pm. This is actually the 2nd time Raleigh PD has tested out a new way of dispatching they are calling "Split District Dispatching". I have put together an explanation over at RR.com (http://bit.ly/RPDSplitDistrict) but I will include it here as well:
=============================================================================== RPD giving Split Dispatching another run
Today, Thursday Feb 9th, from 2pm to around 10pm Raleigh PD Dispatch talkgroups will change a little. As most are aware Raleigh PD divides the city up into 6 districts:
The Northwest District units have 1xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40016. The North District units have 2xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40032. The Northeast District units have 3xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40048. The Southeast District units have 4xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40064. The Downtown District units have 5xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40080. The Southwest District units have 6xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40096.
Since Raleigh PD moved to 800Mhz all 6 dispatch talkgroups above have been patched together with one dispatcher dispatching calls citywide.
Raleigh PD has also used 3 Status Channel TGs: 40112= Southern Unit (4xx, 5xx, 6xx) Status (also known as "Ral 2") 40192= Northern Unit (1xx, 2xx, 3xx) Status (also known as "Ral 3") 40400= Special Ops Status (also known as "Ral 8")
Today a test run is being done called "Split District Dispatching". Today from 2pm to around 10pm the following dispatch talkgroups will be patched together and dispatched out independently:
*Northwest District (1xx Units) TG 40016 will be patched to Southwest District (6xx Units) TG 40096. *North District (2xx Units) TG 40032 will be patched to Northeast District (3xx Units) TG 40048. *Downtown District (5xx Units) TG 40080 will be patched to Southeast District (4xx Units) TG 40064.
With this new Split District Dispatching there is another big change: The 3 status TGs will NOT be used. All Dispatch & Status will occur on the Dispatch Talkgroup as evident in this example:
Note that RPD Officers are advised to use their MCTs (Computers) for as much off radio routine status info such as report numbers, nature change, code, status to free up the Dispatch TGs.
Also note that High Priority calls (robberies, shootings) will be dispatched over all 6 dispatch TGs.
Also Keep in mind that Wake County Event 10 (TG 34368) is set aside as a Countywide "Chase" Channel. This is for Multi-agency use for situations such as a pursuit that starts in one Wake County city/town and extends to other agencies jurisdiction. I always recommend keeping Event 10 in your scan list.
Again: this is a test today until 10pm however Raleigh PD will being going to Split Dispatching permanently a little later this month.

If I want to listen to Wake Forest fire/PD on my ham radio, what do I have to do? 2/9/2012 6:08:48 PM |
KE4ZNR All American 2695 Posts user info edit post |
Quote : | "If I want to listen to Wake Forest fire/PD on my ham radio, what do I have to do?" |
Hey Brandon1: The short answer is on a Ham Radio you can only listen to the analog Fire Dept Initial Alert on 154.190Mhz (Wake County Fire Alert) or the Wake EMS analog VHF alert on 156.225Mhz. The long answer: That is because as of this time there are no commercial Ham Radios that can follow Motorola Trunked Radio Systems that have APCO 25 Digital voice communications. And that is what Wake Forest uses for Police & for the majority of FD related Comms. Wake Forest PD operates in digital voice format on VIPER (http://bit.ly/WForestVIPER) and WForest FD uses the Wake County normal operating procedures which include being alerted on VHF/800Mhz and then switching over to a PS TAC Channel 13-39 or FD Ops TG 1-12.
Why are there no Ham Radios that can do P25 Digital Trunking? Just not enough demand. Add in that to include the P25 digital Vocoder in a HT or mobile Ham Radio the Ham Radio companies would have to pay DVSI a licensing fee for every ham radio that would have that capability you quickly see why it is not included.
For now the only thing that can be monitored Wake Forest Public Safety wise on a Ham Radio is the initial FD Alert on 154.190Mhz (192.8 CTCSS/PL) or the Wake EMS Alert on 156.225Mhz.
We can always hope that someday an affordable radio that has it all including the ham bands will show up on the market. I mean if money is not an option and you know folks in high places that can program it for you then you can always try to get a Datron Guardian II : http://www.dtwc.com/products/public-safety/portable-radios/guardian-ii-tri-band2/9/2012 6:43:28 PM |

Man...I forgot this thread was around Since the last time I posted here I have had some big radio related news. I took a position as an Electronics Technican within Radio Communications for the City of Durham. Basically it is our job to keep the radios working on the Trunked Radio System that the City & County uses. Our shop also houses the telecom techs that keep the infrastructure (sites, towers, zone controllers, etc) running. It is a blast to get paid to "play radio" all day long. I have been issued my own Moto XTS5K:
Which has 40+ Zones of every active talkgroup on the Durham Radio System plus various VIPER & Cary Talkgroups.
We have been testing out an Aeroflex 3920 to help us keep our radios in optimum working condition. Here is the Aeroflex making sure my XTS5K is within peak performance parameters:
Sorry I have not contributed much lately but I have been busy learning the ropes of the new job. 3/16/2012 8:41:21 PM |

For those monitoring NCSHP on analog voice talkgroups in troop C. They will be switching to digital voice talkgroups sooner than later. A good majority of the state has been switched over. I was just given this info earlier today:
Quote : | "On Monday, 26 March 2012 (yesterday) SHP Troop A Communications Center (Greenville) made the transition to a digital 800 MHz radio format. Members that are not assigned to Troop A and who have not had the digital transition performed on their 800 MHz radio should be reminded that they will not have radio communications with Troop A Radio except by using the “Troop A Mutual Aid” talk group. This talk group will remain in the analog configuration to provide interoperability for members still utilizing an analog 800 MHz radio. We are scheduled to have this conversion, for the SHP, completed statewide on Monday, 2 July 2012 after Troop G’s conversion has been completed." |
The SHP digital voice talkgroups have been listed in the Radioreference.com Database for months: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=4087#tgCid-14152
What does this mean for the casual listener? You will need a digital voice capable scanner to continue to monitor their (and pretty much any other) VIPER comms.3/27/2012 5:56:52 PM |

If you can find a discontinued Sangean 909 on the secondary market you might find one for $150-$200. I have a 909 in my collection and love it. For current receivers in your price range I would give the Grundig G3 Globe Traveler a try. http://www.grove-ent.com/grg3.html It averages around $100 and has decent reviews. I will reach out to some friends that are SW buffs and see if they have any other suggestions.

^ Ben's correct. You gotta have not only a decent receiver but some luck as well
To be fair: You don't need a $4000 Watkins Johnson receiver...you just need a decent SW portable and a decent antenna.
One of the mantras I have learned over the years is: Signal Reception is 40 percent receiver, 50 percent antenna and 10 percent luck. You could have a top of the line Sony 2010 but if your antenna sucks baws then your awesome receiver with synchronous detection will be wasted. If you buy a bottom of the line portable with cheap filtering and hook it up to a good beverage longwire antenna it will overload and you will (most likely) receive QRM (crap).
One thing is for damn sure: radio reception can very greatly based off location. What works for me stands a good chance of not working for you because we live in different areas. Reception is a trial and error process until you find a combo of receiver plus antenna that does work in your specific location.
One site that I should have passed along earlier is the HFUnderground's Wiki:
http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Spy_Numbers_Stations
It has a ton of good info and tips on when and where to listen. 4/2/2012 5:41:39 PM |

^ Awesome vid. jtw: some folks consider the "big SWL broadcasters" leaving Shortwave for online streaming a drawback. I don't. It actually makes catching these unique stations that much more fun. Numbers, Military, ALE, Pirates, etc. There is still a crap ton of interesting stuff to hear on the HF part of the radio spectrum. You just never know what you will hear from one night to the next. this is what the array looks like up close:
and that big tan circle right on the border between VA and NC? that is a deactivated Naval HF direction finding array. They used to use them to track soviet subs and pretty much any other HF radio signal they could pull in. more info here:http://www.fas.org/irp/program/collect/classic_bullseye.htm

Ke4znr, do you have an opinion on the manufacturers of racing scanners? From what I can tell, Racing Electronics makes the best headsets, but I'm curious about their line of scanners. Do you know how they compare to some of the others like Track Scan? 4/25/2012 8:27:56 PM |

^ Honestly brother I have not used the racing scanners myself. I do believe the ones RE offers online are "rebadged/rebranded" Uniden Scanners. to get a better response from folks that probably have used them feel free to post a question in this forum at Radioreference.com and I am sure folks will chime right in to help you out: http://forums.radioreference.com/sports-recreational-events/
apparently this site has up to date frequency lists for NASCAR: http://www.jayski.com/links/scanners.htm
Let me know if you still don't get an answer from RR.com. 4/26/2012 12:11:56 PM |

well, i think i have convinced myself to purchase the SC230 and not try to get one of the RE badged ones. I think it will be more useful in the long run away from the track and it will have enough memory to do more with it than just racing stuff. 4/26/2012 12:17:07 PM |

^ Are you talking about this one for $259.95? http://www.racingelectronics.net/index.php?event=store&action=details&cat=handheld_scanners&item=SC230
Dude, save yourself some money and get a Uniden BCD346XT for $209.95: http://www.scannermaster.com/Uniden_Bearcat_BC346XT_Police_Scanner_p/10-501357.htm
It is an all around much better analog scanner with more features. It will handle Nascar just fine and you will be happier long term. I can even help you get it programmed correctly the first couple times so you are running good out of the gate. I just know the 346XT is a MUCH better scanner than the SC230 at a much less price. 4/26/2012 6:03:39 PM |

A scanner buff in FL recorded this short video showing Unitrunker in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv38j1PtnIE The beeps and buzzes you hear are unique to an EDACS system (of which Brevard Co uses): http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=200 In NC there are only 3 EDACS systems of significant size in use by Public Safety agencies: Johnston County, Harnett County, and city of Hickory. For those that want more info on Unitrunker you can surf over to: http://unitrunker.com/ 4/30/2012 7:58:16 PM |
