There's an Indian food truck that pays the Durham Nice Price store to set up in the parking lot every day. There's plenty of room, he's got a convenient space to set up his truck, he pays some rent to the store, and people buy books while they're waiting for their food. Quite literally everyone wins.

I don't understand why Raleigh hates this so much.

Quote :
"Here's a copy of the email I sent to the Raleigh City Councilors earlier this morning.

Raleigh City Councilors,

I'm writing to express my support for the food trucks in downtown Raleigh. I am currently a resident in District D, living in the Glenwood South area. Over the past few months, I have been paying close attention at the effect this debate is having on the young, entrepreneurial, creative class in Raleigh. Even though there are several initiatives under way to attract this passionate group of folks to the area, as it's very well pointed out in this article, the entire food truck debate undermines these efforts because this is the type of city 'character' these folks are looking for in a modern, diverse, urban city. By stalling and dragging this issue out this long, you are making the statement that you do NOT support this type of entrepreneurial spirit in our area, regardless of what other messages you might be trying to push elsewhere. You are literally driving these small businesses out of Raleigh.

More so, most people are seeing clearly that the motivations for blocking the food trucks are not transparent at all. The one group that is very opposed to this effort, the restaurant owners mentioned here, are driving way too much influence and people are noticing. How is it possible that many other cities, larger and smaller, have been able to figure this out, yet in Raleigh, city councilors have spent countless hours debating petty details that cannot be backed up by any facts? The discussions on the issue are laughable many times. Either you support entrepreneurship, small-businesses, and new business models, or you don't. Either you support 'government getting out of the way' or you don't. You can't say I'm all in favor of jobs and then completely shoot down an entire business model because some business owners are afraid of some competition (isn't this what free enterprise is all about?) You're already made 1000 restrictions on the food trucks with all the regulations you're placing on them. You can't really have it both ways.

I've heard it several times over the last few months.. over First Friday conversations, over Twitter, on blogs, you name it. "I don't want to establish my business in downtown Raleigh because"... 1. it has no character 2. it doesn't support new business models 3. it doesn't seem to really embrace diversity. 4. there is no startup culture or incubator... On and on. It's sad, really. There are many things like food trucks that might come our way in the future. "Pop-up" stores. Co-working businesses. Brick and mortar restaurants are not the only businesses we need to make downtown Raleigh flourish. However, you're making our city unfriendly to some of these efforts, which means we're not going to grow as a modern city and will keep lagging behind others because we just want to keep Raleigh as it is. lol @ all the people who say they are going to boycott the restaurants. the people that would boycott are the same people that never go to those restaurants anyway.

for every person that refuses to eat there, 2 more are willing.

Food truck ordinance passes 6-2 which allows but restricts food trucks in Raleigh.

Opposed were Thomas Crowder (surprise) and John Odom who stated he's not supporting foodtrucks because he's not looking forward to Raleigh looking like Durham.

I used to drink at the Hibernian in the past, ate at Tobacco Road several times, have eaten at Caffe Luna countless times dating back to college, and used to call Big Ed's the best breakfast in Raleigh.

You're correct about that-- but then again why are the restaurant owners so scared?

it's all a moot point, logic and reason won out(for the most part).

^^ they re-revamped their menu in a positive direction, and the staff is much friendlier lately than they used to be

also, the ordinances are tl;dr but is there anywhere near hillsborough street they can park?

be pretty cool if they could roll up out front of patterson

The change in staff must be recent then because last year 90% of the time I went in the service was terrible. I eventually gave up having lunch there because of it.

highlights:

food trucks pay $150 per year in fees to the City
Minimum of 150 feet away from other restaurants (not 100% sure on this one)
can stay open until 3a.m.

heard possibly only allowed on private property (not public streets) and 150' from restaurants so is it going to be hard to have one near a bar?

Did anyone go to the Car Show at Motorco in Durham on Saturday?

Chirba Chirba Dumpling, Pie Pushers, Klausie's, The Parlour, and Daisy Cakes were all there.

I had the malted cinnamon cone from The Parlour. That have some seriously delicious ice cream.

"Brian Bottger, owner of the Only Burger truck, said he knows the last food truck rodeo was not fun for everyone: there were so many people that lines merged into each other and a few newer trucks ran out of food. So this time, Bottger says they will close down Foster Street so the food trucks can spread out, they added an extra hour and the trucks will be more prepared to handle the crowds.

Well thank goodness for that. Maybe I'll try going this time.

I was there. Enjoyed a good slice from the Pie Pushers truck (salami, mushroom, & goat cheese) and would visit again. If I had been able to stay longer in the afternoon I would have visited the Parlour as well.

What is Klausie's? I only remember seeing the other four.

Is this really necessary? It seems like Raleigh only wants to collect money out of lifting stupid restrictions. I'm not saying food trucks are the be all and end all to living in a good city, but if you don't think Raleigh isn't extortionist, you're full of shit.

<3 Bulkogi

Last night, I had one of their bul-dogs: all beef hot dog, cheese, bulkogi, caramelized onions, and kimchi. Best thing I ate all night.

We also had a fluffernutter crepe from Parlez Vous Crepe that was damn tasty.

Went to the Rodeo yesterday in RTP. Hit up Pie Pushers and The Parlour. Sadly they were out of the Malted Cinnamon ice cream but I did get to try the Apple Pie Ice Cream, it was great.

They really need to fix that setup in RTP though. The parking was atrocious and the line for Chirba Chirba was extremely long and moving fairly slow.
