I haven't tried Plex yet but I've seen it pop up in almost every forum/google search etc. I've just been attempting the default media player app that comes with the Roku. Seems like part of the problem is the support for ac3 is only pass-thru, and i'm not sure if the sound bar I have supports it. I haven't checked yet.

I havent had any issues with playing any on my Roku 3 granted most of what I use it for are tv shows so its unlikely they have DD or DTS sound I would guess.

I want a reason to get a Roku 4, but it looks like some people have taken issue with the fact that it has a fan, and the better processor gets pretty hot.

All my TV shows have DD or DTS. It's what they're broadcast in over cable, etc.

Well it depends what your audio is going to from the Roku and if that receiver/sound bar/etc can decode it. For example my Fire Stick and my parents Roku is hooked up via HDMI directly to the receive and so the receiver is the one decoding Dolby Digital HD+ and DTS as long as the source contains that format. Just make sure whatever you're playing the sound on can decode the right format.

So I’m debating on roku vs Apple TV. Everything I’ve read seems to indicate roku is superior unless you do a lot of iTunes purchasing (I don’t). We have iPhones, but if I can save $100 for the same or better experience, I will. Any reason to think to the contrary?

^^ I read recently that the new AppleTV will have 4k capability. Is that deal breaker? Will others follow suit?

Yeah 4K is prevalent now. I’m just wanting maximum content without a lot of headache at a reasonable price

Picked up a Fire Stick gen2 for $40 while traveling for the hotel. Going to swap it out with my gen1 at home and use that for travel. While I wouldn't mind something like the shield I haven't felt the need to upgrade. The Fire stick does everything I want it to and I have an HTPC with Kodi / Steam streaming that does everything else.
