Shanghai Express is WORLDS better than that place, and that's saying something

as far as Sakura is concerned, their hibachi chicken is okay, but their white/shrimp sauce is incredibly good

Agreed. I lived near there from '02 to '05 and while it wasn't gourmet, it was cheap, decent quality hibachi/yaki soba/etc. Went there again on a whim a couple of weeks ago, not having been in probably 3 years, and it was pretty damn bad. Menu has changed, place is starting to look run-down, and it's just gone generally downhill. Will not be returning.

^I remember their shrimp sauce being good, and was going to try it again. However, what was in the container on the counter was not cold, not even cool, and I'll be damned if I'm going to get sick from eating an improperly kept mayo-based (or related) sauce.

I always get my food to-go from Sakura, and they keep their to-go shrimp sauce in the fridge behind the counter.

a lot of the stuff people are criticizing around campus was a lot better before management changes.

Back in the day Sakura was much better than before sometime around 2003 when the management changed. I recall many a time freshman year where JohnnyTHM and/or ncwolfpack would grab some food from there.

Also, old school golden dragon had ridiculously low prices. I remember being able to get a massive amount of sweet and sour "chicken" with two massive scoops of rice for like $3.50 then they changed owners and prices went up but quality was the same or worse and you didn't get as much.

Likewise NY Pizza was a lot better when you were cramped into the small space before they expanded into school kids. I think the smaller space meant they kept less food fixed and you were more likely to get a slice right out of the oven. People didn't hang around cause it was so cramped and there were less quick options for food so it had a lot of traffic in that day and time which all amounted to fresher food. That and the special was only like $3.25 when I started.

Wow I feel old now.

I like how you put "chicken" in quotes because it's pretty much just fried batter.

Subconscious

How is that place even in business? I never see anyone there or have ever heard of anyone eating from there, and I went to State for four years. I just always assumed it was a shell business harboring a meth lab or something

Cueva de Lobos is terrible.

We had them come by with some free food for a student event...it was inedible. I mean the place would've been a great hang out to drink at...neat bar, chips and salsa...except the salsa was god awful. Even ate there once...terrible decision.

i like it the same if not better than jersey mikes

i mean i'd never try their pizza or pasta (yikes)

but their cold cut subs? A+ in my book. i <3 the bread.

AHA, you're wary of cooked foods like pizza and pasta.

But something that involves the monitoring and preservation of meats and cheeses is totally cool.

Not tryna be mean or nothing...only time I've ever gotten food poisoning was from a sub shop.

I'm also pretty sure that you can figure out some of the differences in the food prep.

It's not a big deal. I'm just saying...it's weird to be wary of pizza/pasta but not a sub bar.

You are correct that food such as pizza and pasta are prepared and cared for differently than cold cuts, but you aren't doing a good job of making me understand exactly what you mean and how it pertains to what cadwhackle posted.

I guess her post triggered a memory of your food poisoning experience and your brain connected that to what she posted, but that is not really what she was talking about

i will say i recently observed a patron eating a pizza sub at subconscious

it looked tempting

BECAUSE

it looked like a french bread pizza. and i love french bread pizzas.

i don't get people that think their subs are gross though. for serious. they are delicious (esp for the price). if you'll eat quiznos or subway but not subconscious something is wrong.

Worst sub shop: Jersey Mikes
Worst Barbecue: Ole Time BBQ
Worst Pizza: Papa John's (the sauce is nasty - too sweet)
Worst Steak: pretty much any chain steakhouse (except Ruth's Chris)

Opinions are like assholes...everyones got one and most of them stink.

i pretty much like all the worst food:

subconscious
shanghai (ok only past 1am, but still)
el dorado (the one off creedmoor - these peeps are awesome and give me their mexican grocery store fruitbreadloafthing hookup)

i haven't eaten at bbq lodge in awhile but i remember it being better than olde time. but nothing beats coopers. NOTHING.

and as far as overrated goes, the fucking pit wins that category hands down for me

^ i agree. i know it is a chain but it is WAY better than subway/quiznos. i'd do subconscious and jersey's over the other two any dayyyyy.

I would rank either of those two above Jersey Mikes or Miami Subs (which are the bottom two for me)

I like SubConscious

hell, i'll even give some reasons.

Jersey mikes does not have enough toppings for my taste...if you dont want it Mike's way, it takes forever and their choices are so limited.

lettuce, tomato, onions, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, banana peppers is pretty much all they have at the one near my work.

I used to be a staunch supporter of Golden Dragon back in the day, before it went to purely standard Chinese food. Sure, the stuff wasn't authentic, but at least it was different. The giant, crispy pieces of general tso's...damn.

Shanghai Express, meanwhile, could then and can now be invited to lick my asshole.

I remember a post on here from way back -- no idea who said it, probably long gone by now -- regarding this debate:

Quote :
"If Golden Dragon is China, then Shanghai Express is Laos or some other shitty Asian country."

---

To answer the question in the OP...

I never saw the appeal of Bada Wings. Seemed like pretty standard wings for above-average prices on the few occasions I went there.

Ten-Ten, though it is now mercifully dead, still gets mentioned because it was just that awful.

Both of the better known Mediterranean places by campus (Greek Fiesta and whatever one is on Hillsborough) are worthless to me. If you're going to spend that much money on that variety of food, go to Neomonde.

I would not feed Pizzamerica to a stray dog. That's how bad it is.

hard to say what's the worst food in Raleigh. Because most of the food I think is just terrible is a chain. I can usually find something decent at most places, but if I had to pick some places that I think are overrated as hell, compared to their reputations, would be:

Angus Barn --just a joke. Been twice, cannot BELIEVE it's so heavily revered. It has to be the atmosphere. The lure is well beyond me. $40-50 for a fucking mediocre steak and a potato. Suck my asshole. I've had better, more fairly priced food at pretty much everywhere in Raleigh.

Flying Biscuit--I fucking love good brunch. Went there after hearing and reading that they have the best brunch in Raleigh, and pretty much got something I could've whipped up in my kitchen without much thought. Just really boring. I was surprised.

Humble Pie--Again, this place gets dickrode so hard, had to try it, tried twice, not impressed. Just boring, again. Very cool place, though.

Mellow Mushroom --OK, pretty much a chain now, but still. I'm not hating because I run Ruckus. I'll gladly give love to several pizza places in Raleigh, and this shit is just not good to me, at all. I've had some decent sandwiches there, great salad, but that pizza is just really meh to me. Can't usually finish a couple slices off a pie without resenting them for having such great business.

The Pit--Hey, it's BARBEQUE. Get real. Decent fried chicken, but it's fucking friend chicken. Highly overblown. Not bad, but seriously?

Shit, almost forgot....Big Easy has some tenaciously bad food. Holy shit. Very cool place, cool bar, cool bartenders.
