Nope. Very few returns in that time period have been funded. It will probably come later today or Thursday.

How long did it take for you gys to get your state refunds back? I filed a couple weeks ago and got my fed return middle of last week. I'm not complaining, just wondering what the average turnaround time has been

Update to the funding delay:

Quote :
"During an industry call this afternoon, the IRS announced that they are behind in processing 2.5 million returns acknowledged between February 2 and February 6. All of these returns will be processed through CADE by tonight and the IRS estimates that these returns will be funded during the week of Feb 27.

Currently the “Where’s My Refund” site is displaying “No Data” for some of these returns. As soon as all returns have been processed, the site will be updated with an accurate estimated refund date."

Well no, that is in addition to my withholding from a full time job (6 months) and a part-time job for the entire year...

This was the first year i've actually had to pay instead of getting a refund, so don't bash too hard

I did mine this morning, getting everything back from the state and a few thousand more than my withholdings from federal. I'm thinking I should stop all withholdings now and stop lending the gov interest free.

Already received my refund from NC. Apparently, by filing in Feb. 2-6, I've significantly delayed my federal refund. Where's My Refund tool says March 6.

I filed my taxes on the 8th
IRS accepted the 9th
NC accepted on the 10th
Got both refunds on the 16th.

anyone got an IRS contact? Last year, my gf filed her taxes and the IRS said she owed $700 on her federal, with no explanation. A few months later, they refunded her the $700 saying she didn't owe that, but no further explanation. This year, she was due a refund, filed, and the IRS is taking $700 back out of her refund, no explanation. Seems like some bullshit going on. She can't get anyone on the phone.

This is what I think happened... She filed 2010 return and owed $700. She then sent said payment in but the IRS did not no where to apply it so they sent it back. At this point she still hasn't paid the 2010 balance due and will not be issued any refund until that debt has been paid off.

1-800-829-1040 is the number to the IRS. You will be waiting about 30-45 minutes to talk to someone. Good luck.

Why on earth would you pay $700 without an explanation? Sounds like your gf is dumb.

Your tax refund is scheduled to be direct deposited on February 29, 2012. If your refund is not credited to your account by March 5, 2012, check with your bank to find out if it has been received. Please wait until March 5, 2012 before you contact us again because we are unable to take any action until then.

I just filed for the first time using One Price Taxes.

First off, I get a W2 and various 1099s. My situation is far more complex than most individuals who just hold one steady job. I meticulously track expenses and such, and have everything in a spreadsheet ready to rock. I have every number you could ever imagine in-hand when I start filing. I've used Turbo Tax the past three years, paying something like $70-80 per year for the e-filing fed + NC using the Home + Business web software.

Now, the review.

I gave these guys a shot because they're NC based, and with a Facebook coupon + "REDTAG" coupon, the entire thing cost me $2.98. Yes, for fed and NC. Huge savings over Turbo Tax.

The downside is that this web-based software is absolutely nowhere near as sexy, sophisticated and transparent as that provided by Turbo Tax. I mean, not even on the same playing field. If you aren't a tax expert, you will certainly skip some things using One Price Taxes. There's practically no description fields at all. Let me give you an example: I come to the section asking if myself or my wife had (or planned on) contributed to a ROTH or Traditional IRA. On Turbo Tax, it *automatically* calculates your gross income, and tells you straight up whether you will save any money by contributing. One Price Taxes does not. I had to Google 2011's income limits to determine that myself. If you're not that savvy, you'll have no idea whether or not to contribute as a tax advantage.

That's just one of a dozen examples of One Price Taxes simply being "dumber" than Turbo Tax. TT pulls in and auto-calculates a crazy amount of data. OPT won't even offer to calculate what my 2012 quarterly estimated taxes should be.

Bottom line: OPT is extremely barebones. Had I not had my 2010 return PDF in front of me, going down it line by line and then figuring out in my head which line OPT was likely talking about, I would've been wildly lost.

The main reason you should avoid: currently, you *cannot see a preview PDF of what you're about to file!* This is INSANE! You literally mash "send" without ANY WAY to take a look at the PDFs that the feds and state are about to see. Once you do, it's over. The only way to make a change is to file for an amendment. I cannot believe this oversight. Turbo Tax lets you load an entire draft PDF, showing line-by-line the exact thing that you're about to file. You can then see if you forgot anything, or if anything looks wonky compared to last year's PDF. If this feature is added, I'd forgive most everything else for a ~$68 savings. As-is, you're blindly filing your taxes, and that's just dumb.

Thankfully, mine were okay, but it's only because I've done this rodeo before and I'm intuitive enough to look at my old PDF filing and figure out what's what with the new software. These guys may be affordable, but the software isn't helpful at all for those with long lists of business deductions and more complex filings.

I just want to eat a sock. Evidently you can review your PDF before filing, it's just hidden up top.

So, yea, great service for three bucks.

Does anyone have any experience with filing back taxes or using one of those Tax Help companies? I have a friend, seriously it's not me, that hasn't filed in a few years. He's finally getting everything filed this year and was asking about some of these tax help companies you hear about, or even legitimate ways to get all of his debt consolidated. Anyone familiar that can offer some insight?

does he want to pay his taxes or fight them? if pay, then just go to a tax service, file, and then pay. if he wants to fight, then find the least scummy scumbag tax lawyer out there.

It took me a solid 15 minutes to find a way to preview the pdf of the taxes using one price taxes as well. I seem to remember that it showed up on a page the second time I went back through looking for it that it didn't show up the first time.

Yeah, I shelled out the extra for Turbo Tax so I wouldn't be bothered with such things.
Just got my federal refund a week after filing. Not too concerned about state.

He wants to begin to pay, but was hoping there was a way to consolidate it all and cut down on the interest/levees or perhaps the whole amount.

Be careful with any tax attorney. The first thing he/she needs to do before going to any attorney is get the returns prepared and filed. Any tax attorney worth their salt will have this expectation as well. Some tax attorneys will prepare the returns but you would generally pay out the ass for this.

Once he knows the balance due for all the years thats when an offer in compromise can be considered. Most of the time the tax attorneys are pretty useless anyway. I have had one client that actually had some savings by using an attorney. They owed like $100K and ended up getting it down to about 60K which all had to be paid at one time upon submission of the Offer in Compromise.

Lifetime Learning Credit question:
Im in a one year program, Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. My 1098-T reports my total tuition for both semesters, even though 2012 was actually paid in January. Rather than using the total number from my 1098-T, am I able to report ONLY what was paid in 2011 this year, and report the rest with my 2012 return, allowing me to maximize my tax savings (since the amount of tuition over $10K will not be usable).

So wife and I had a falling out with our CPA.

Don't suppose anyone knows of any that's willing to handle another client? If it wasn't for the fact that my wife is paid like she owns her own business, I could file a 1040-EZ, so I should be a relatively easy client to handle.

In fact, I just paid my Q1 2012 quarterly estimated taxes to NC... before they've paid me back for last year. Lovely.

^ Eh, I did that the year before, but I figured NC would get confused if I rolled the first payment and paid the last three. I'd prefer to just have proof that I paid all four. Maybe I'm paranoid.

Well I do everything I can to punish the state and rolling refunds into estimated payments makes much more sense to me. I encourage all clients to also change their exemptions so they do not get a refund from the state. They have proven year after year they cannot issue refunds timely.

Ugh...

I'm still having to harass my employer on whether my W2 is right.

The W2 they gave me said I made a pre-tax income of some $41,000. I didn't contribute to an IRA or 401k or anything last year. My health insurance was like $35/month starting in April of last year. I made 45K, or 3750/month until October when I was bumped up to $46,200/yr or 3850/month.

Any reason why they are so far off? This is my first time filing by myself, and this is the only reason I haven't submitted my taxes yet. I already have everything else in and ready on Tax Slayer. I just don't want to have a wrong W2 and get all my shit wrong. But I know next to nothing on shit like this, so I hope that they're right.

Does anyone know something I'm missing?
