it's infuriating that they made traffic horrible for three years with all that construction and then they only put in one freaking new lane when they obviously needed at least 2.

the traffic and wrecks are seriously ridiculous on this road. it's not safe and it probably costs hundreds of millions of dollars of lost productivity a year around here.

I drove past soon after it happened. There was a 4Runner on its side in the middle of the highway, 4-5 passersby crowded around the vehicle, as no responders had arrived yet. I also saw a Tacoma facing the wrong direction halfway up the embankment and a Mercedes(?) pulled unto the shoulder with a nice sized dent in driver door.

I saw no other damaged or apparently involved vehicles, but I was traveling in the opposite direction.

Well I was almost rearended just past the 440 exit. Both cars ahead of me hit the brakes really hard (still don't know why) so I had to do the same. Chrysler 200 behind me was caught by surprise and swerved onto the shoulder, all the while braking. Freaked me out a bit

DURHAM — A seven-vehicle crash that left vehicles chock-a-block in the middle of eastbound Interstate 40 closed that side of the road about 9:40 a.m. Monday.

Workers were able to move the wreckage to the shoulder of the highway, and traffic was allowed to move again in all but the right lane by 10:30 a.m.

Three people were transported to a local hospital for treatment, said Durham Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael in a news release.

The accident happened at the I-40 interchange with N.C. 55.
