This was pretty embarrassing
Quote : | " Dear Wolfpack Family, I am writing to share with you the status of the search for our new head coach for men’s basketball. There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings — sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is. The conversations have been candid. We have not tried to sugarcoat the challenge of rebuilding our basketball program. Our absence for 5 consecutive years from the NCAA Tournament was noted by each coach as evidence that the program is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild. Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge. That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge. I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers. Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors. But, right now, we need to remain focused on finding a talented collegiate coach who is a fighter, full of confidence and appreciation for the opportunity to lead our basketball program back to national prominence. That will happen in spite of those who believe this cannot occur. Wolfpack Basketball is destined for a revival. We will accept no less. Please keep the faith while we continue the search. Your emails and text messages of support have meant everything to me. I am blessed to be your AD. In the Spirit of the Pack, Debbie " |

Face it. If we go to a bowl, TOB will be our coach next year. If we win one more game, we go to a bowl. A shitty one, but a bowl nonetheless. One of our remaining opponents is the worst team in the ACC. (No, that is not us, despite what some of you may think.) Wake isn't much better. We probably won't get blown out by Clemson, even, as we tend to play up to the level of quality competition. Doubt we'll win but I doubt it will be an embarrasment.
I don't love it either. But with 3 years left on the contract, a big buyout, and having finished the season at .500 or better, it's the only thing that makes sense. Plus, with the cupboard looking pretty bare for next season, there may be more than enough losses to justify waking this one back up. 11/4/2012 9:00:34 PM |

Yep, unless he loses out or loses 3 of the next 4 (assuming we make a bowl game) I think it's pretty unlikely that he gets fired this year. Next year will be the judgement year with a new QB and lower expectations. 11/4/2012 11:20:36 PM |

I don't understand why a mediocre program like NC State is too good to hire a coordinator. Typically a coordinator will come more cheaply and we may strike gold.
I was not a supporter of firing TOB until this UVA debacle as I don't know how we can afford it unless a major booster steps in. That game on Saturday was just plain embarrassing on all levels. I'd be in favor of just firing TOB, promoting Tenuta at this point. Our recruiting is so awful that it makes no difference if TOB is retained.

In addition to not losing out, I would hope that staff changes are a requirement of TOB keeping his job but I'm not sure about that. At our level you don't rock the boat too much if you are on a bowl streak, unfortunately. 11/5/2012 9:14:56 AM |

And there's a 23 page thread on packpride about "legitimate" options for a new football coach. Maybe my favorite post from that thread:

Going to a bowl doesn't mean jack shit anymore.
Back when like 30 teams made bowls you could hang your hat on such things, but now teams with losing records even make bowls. It is no measure of real success in college football. 11/5/2012 9:22:23 AM |

Teams with .500 records make bowls, and then lose, finishing the season with a losing record. I think it's an NCAA rule that you cannot go to a bowl with a losing regular-season record.11/5/2012 9:55:19 AM |

I usually hate to post any ESPN insider stuff out of principle...but this is so amazing I couldn't resist. This is from a list of the top jobs that could be opening up this year...
Quote : | "3. North Carolina State Wolfpack Current coach: Tom O'Brien | Current record: 5-4
This is the only school on this list with a winning record and, quite frankly, wasn't on my "Would you take this job?" list when I started calling around. But nearly everyone I talked to brought it up as a position they expected to be opening, and one they would salivate over.
"Have you seen the facilities in Raleigh?" a West Coast coordinator asked. "If you were at that stadium 15 years ago and then you were there over the last year, then you can see how committed they are to the program. That fan base is a sleeping football giant. And there is a ton of talent in North Carolina that leaves every year. O'Brien is a good X's and O's guy but he's never taken to recruiting. Get a real recruiter in there and he would mop up."
From the outside, the idea of taking an ACC job might seem like the wrong direction. But everyone I talked to said the opposite -- as long as it's the right ACC job.
"That conference is ripe for the picking," the West Coast coordinator continued. "It would take no time at all to start racking up big numbers and getting BCS berths. You can make a hell of a living doing that. Just ask Virginia Tech. NC State is the kind of place that can get to that level, and in a hurry. The other ACC jobs that might be out there -- Boston College and Maryland -- they're a hundred miles behind State."" |

^ I like the tone of that article. And I am hoping that it excites some coaching prospects to come this way. A good recruiter along with that. I don't dislike TOB, I just never thought he as good as a coach as people claimed.
I would like to see an exciting coaching staff come in and make some noise.

^,^^ I'm a TOB fan, and would really rather see him win enough to keep his job until he retires.
I doubt if Debbie Yow really wants to have to hire a basketball coach in her first year, and a football coach in her 2nd (or third, you get my point), and I don't really think anyone considers TOB more than a placeholder - someone to get the program respectable (on/off field), not a coach to really inflate expectations.
With that said, that one west-coast coordinator's opinion makes me hopeful that our reputation is high, and maybe we could step up when a change comes. 11/9/2012 3:59:21 PM |

Awful until Bill Snyder. I remember one of those ESPN top 20 shows from about a decade ago that had one of their teams in the 80s as one of the worst teams ever in any sport.11/14/2012 9:44:06 AM |

Yeah K-State may have had the worst college football program of any in a major conference prior to Bill Snyder.
When Snyder retired a few years ago and became the AD, Ron fatass Prince took over and while he did a decent job recruiting (Josh Freeman and Colin Klein), he was awful as a coach. Snyder fired him, took back over, and now has K-State poised to play for a National Championship and has the Heisman favorite.
Snyder is a god at finding and retaining the juco talent that is all over that area. Watch his teams and you'll rarely see them making basic mistakes like being out of position, missing tackles, giving up huge special team plays, etc. I wish we could find a guy like Snyder as State would be a great place for a coach like him. 11/14/2012 10:14:22 AM |

North Carolina State's interest in Franklin hardly comes as a surprise. Wolfpack athletics director Debbie Yow served as Maryland's athletics director when Franklin was an assistant there under Ralph Friedgen. On February 6, 2009, Yow named Franklin the Terrapin's so-called Head Coach in Waiting. But Franklin left Maryland for Vanderbilt before Friedgen was released from his contract." |
