This interview was just sad. He didn't defend himself at all, and got pushed around like you would expect a 3rd grader to be. Even if you sort of agreed with his politics in theory, he just didn't do anything at all to make himself look like anything other than an embarrassment. I was hoping to see him go off on some crazy rant, but it was just...sad.

^^ geniusboy should have never agreed to be on the interview. It's not like cameras popped up at his door and were in his face. He agreed, then he heavily promoted it on his site. Piers tore him a new one for sure, but he had it coming. Plenty of people have beliefs/opinions with facts available to assert their position. The problem is unless you are surrounded in an atmosphere that consists of mainly the topic at hand, most people won't have facts/statistics at hand to do such an interview that peirs conducted.

If this were with the leader/heavily involved member of the NRA, they generally have statistics at hand to defend their position. If it's a congressional member who memorizes and reviews facts before an interview or congressional hearing, they can defend themselves properly.

On the other hand, even though I have beliefs about gun control, gay marriage, ect, I am not involved in those topics in a daily manner. I know enough to have an opinion and have been familiarized with the statistics to have that opinion. But theres no way I would be prepared to go on national TV and conduct an interview on position, because I'm not that familiar with the statistics and studies enough to defend my views properly. And that is what makes a TV interview or a debate different from the Internet, where you have time to research and post links to studies/statistics to backup your opinion/view.

But regardless, a lot of this falls to geniusxboy for not doing any preparation. He should have at least familiarized himself with some basic statistics to simply defend his position.

That's the especially insidious thing about this. He should have never agreed to the interview in the first place. You can't toss around facts like this as if you are in some debate, because in reality they don't hold water. Both facts in quotations here are epic causation/correlation fallacies. When it comes to economics and violence statistics, you really have to put forth a huge amount of work and research to make a reasonable argument.

For instance, if I were on a grant to research this, the first thing that I would do would be to find the best correlation out of other variables such as: Avg. family income, wellfare dependence, avg. education/reading level, etc. etc.
