The team is going to watch this and then get over-pumped for the tournament. Imagine chugging 2 Five Hour Energys and then going out and playing good fundamental basketball. Not going to happen.
This was a great production nonetheless. I don't think the 40th anniversary special will be able to top it. 3/18/2013 11:40:49 PM |

The only thing I missed about this versus The Glass Slipper Still Fits is the second half of the story about Lo's free throws.
In this version, they tell the story of how V said, "When Lo hits these, here's what we're gonna do," and that's the end.
In the older production, then Whitt (or Thurl, I forget) says, "We broke the huddle, and V told me, 'When he misses that shot, do this!'"
I realize that's probably a choice more related to Lo's passing than anything else, but it's a damn funny story. 3/19/2013 1:25:42 AM |

Compare this to the one about the KU fan that rallies some rich alum to bid almost 5 million on the Naismith rules, and there is no comparison. Overdramatized, sure, but I would rather have that than the story of how some super nerd gets trolled by a Duke alum. 3/19/2013 1:39:01 AM |

^^^ Yes, let's get a Blu-Ray release of a film that's a least half sourced from video tape. 3/21/2013 12:14:36 AM |
BlackDog All American 15654 Posts user info edit post |
I have the entire Houston game on my PC from a VHS source and I can confirm that the footage in the film was not sourced from VHS. They had access to the original tapes (probably 35mm) from ESPN which was cleaned up decently. Are you suggesting that all old movies released on Blu-Ray also make no sense? For example 1976 "Taxi Driver" or 1984 "Paris, Texas"? I have plenty of mid 60's to late 80's films on Blu-Ray releases that look much better than their DVD counterparts, Taxi Driver being a good example. Footage being old is not a reason to limit the film to DVD.. Not to mention they could include the entire NCAA tournament run with the film on a 50GB Blu-Ray and with 2 disks they could include the entire run from the ACC tourney on and all the interviews/speeches they could find (that is one of the benefits of Blu-Ray, supplements) Why do you think you can get all of the 30 for 30s on Blu-Ray if it is such a dumb idea? However having to buy a collection of them shouldn't be a requirement, which is what I was saying. You don't release old footage on Blu-Ray to make it look like a new 2013 Blockbuster release, you release it on Blu-Ray to give you the absolute highest quality footage possible of the original material. The descriptions below explains this concept better than I can.
1976 Taxi Driver 4k restoration Blu-Ray release -
Quote : | "...viewers both intimately familiar with Scorsese's film and Cinematographer Michael Chapman's handiwork or new to the picture will be awed at the way the image doesn't look like a new 2011 movie, but looks like a brand new 1976 release. The general film-like texture makes this a revelation, and the Blu-ray resolution, grain retention, and the like only add to the way the transfer so effortlessly brings out the finest available details, right down to ever-so-slight layers of dirt on Bickle's yellow taxi. Facial and clothing details are extraordinary, too, and shadow detail is top-notch; black levels are positively immaculate. As noted, colors aren't particularly vibrant, but they appear in such a way that they blend into the general context and broader look for which Scorsese's films strives. Still, the yellow cab, various shades of period clothing, and even the bluing on Bickle's .44 magnum revolver all look positively gorgeous within the context of the film's parameters. In short, this is a revelation, one of the finest transfers of a classic film ever to grace a Blu-ray disc. Sony continues to prove to be the cream of the crop when it comes to quality of Blu-ray transfers; Taxi Driver may be the studio's crowning achievement to date." |

1984 Paris, Texas Blu-Ray Release -
Quote : | "Supervised and approved by director Wim Wenders, this new high-definition digital transfer was created on a Spirit Datacine from the original 35mm camera negative. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using MTI's DRS system and Pixel Farm's PFClean system, while Digital Vision's DVNR system was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction.
Fine object detail is terrific, contrast levels consistent throughout the entire film, and clarity outstanding. The most impressive upgrade, however, is with the color-scheme. I've seen Paris, Texas more than a dozen times, and I don't recall ever seeing such incredibly vibrant colors. Many of the panoramic vistas are simply breathtakingly beautiful. Edge enhancement and macroblocking are not a serious issue of concern with this transfer. You won't have to worry about aliasing, ringing, or excessive denoising either. Paris, Texas has a natural and very filmic look that should please even the most demanding amongst film aficionados. Finally, there are absolutely no disturbing flecks, cuts, scratches, warps, dirt, or debris that I noticed while viewing the film" |

1980 The Shining Blu-Ray release -
Quote : | "Prior to the release of this BD, I owned abysmal, low-quality versions of The Shining on VHS and DVD. The color bleed and poor definition got in the way of enjoying the film, and so did the 4:3 aspect ratio, which was a problem even on Warner's 2001 DVD reissue. Finally, the studio delivers the goods on this Blu-ray version with its VC-1 encode. The picture isn't perfect, and one observes the occasional glitch. The video appears very much "cleaned up", and I suspect digital noise reduction and other processing to have played a role in the outcome. Usually I'm not fond of that kind of scrubbing, but the results here are so much better than any previous home video version of this film, that I'm willing to forego criticism. Overall, the picture is vibrant, solid, rich and highly detailed.
This improvement is apparent from the outset, as the opening credits roll over aerial footage of Colorado's rugged landscape. Watch the 1080p resolution of mountains and trees, and the contrast from the shadows of the pine trees to the white areas of snow. The picture shows good depth and definition. In fact, the detail is a revelation. Watch the wall paper patterns in the hallways of the overlook, or Jack's facial features when Kubrick pulls the camera in tight. Detail in objects, skin tones and black levels are accurate. The picture may not be perfect, but it is an enormous improvement that helps convey the power of the film and ultimately draws in the viewer as never before." |

1971 THX 1138 Blu-Ray release -
Quote : | "Ultimately, the presentation may not amount to frame-to-frame perfection, but it handily trumps its DVD counterpart and should easily please anyone armed with tempered expectations." |
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/THX-1138-Blu-ray/9459/
Do you get the idea why some of us would prefer a quality Blu-Ray release over old ass DVD even though the game films are 30 years old? Of course 30 for 30 isn't going to receive the treatment these films did, but I am just pointing out that because something is old, doesn't mean it can't benefit from Blu-Ray, especially when you factor in the amount of supplement space on Blu-Ray vs. DVD.

The footage was clearly shot on video, not filmed. Surely they had access to master tapes, but that is _not_ the same as having 35mm film to restore.
It's the difference between Seinfeld and Married with Children. One was filmed, the other shot on video. One can be restored, one can't.3/21/2013 6:38:55 AM |

Just watched it for the first time last night and was really impressed. It was really good. Some things that stood out:
1) How sad is it that we will never see that quality of basketball ever again? With players like Sampson, Jordan, Hakeem, Clylde, etc as upperclassmen. Just sad...
2) I didn't really appreciate the magnitude of both the tournament runs we had. Trailing in just about every game to superior teams. It really put it into perspective how difficult it was to keep winning and how something like that will never happen again.
3) The 3pt line was a joke. Really worked in our favor in the ACCT.
4) The contrast b/t what actually happened that brought down Jimmy V and what went on in Chapel Hill is staggering. Everything that was alleged in the book was false (except for players selling tickets and clothes). But all the allegations of academic fraud, etc detailed in the book is exactly what has happened at UNC.
5) The fact that Jimmy V is the topic of converstaion every year at tournament time, the V Foundation, ESPY speach, etc is probably why Dean Smith lost his mind.
