So it's shallow to expect that people should take care of themselves? I dress up to go to work everyday because it's what's expected of me in my career, and I want to keep my job. My employer isn't shallow. He wants me to dress up in respect of the clients that come to our office wanting to see a professional work environment.

You want to dress like a slob? Fine, but you will get the level of respect that a slob gets.

And as begonias said, it doesn't have to be expensive. I've bought the majority of my clothes from goodwill and other thrift stores. And when I shop there, I'm picky about my brands.

I don't know about you, but what I wear to the grocery store differs from what I wear on a date, or when I'm trying to pick up someone.

I like to dress up when I go out with my man. Whether he notices or not, I think that by doing so, I show respect for him and the time he takes out of his day to spend with me. I don't think that makes me shallow.
