i am not saying that a municipality would not charge more or less than a private company. dtown said that i, due to my particular situation, should want municipal broadband because it's the only hope of having broadband service in an "unprofitable" area. my reply is that situation would essentially charge everyone who lives in a "profitable" area to subsidize my broadband service.
what i want is for my area to be profitable.
a common trend in the pro net neutrality argument is that big telecom companies are jerks. and they are. i don't disagree. they treat their customers like shit. they can get by with that when they're the only game in town and when all they have to do is lobby the govt to get their way. take the power away from the govt and you've also taken it away from the telecom company.

I guess because ultimately, Wake Co would be beholden to internal auditors, city, county, and state laws, and tax payers? Sure there would be some waste as there always is with government endeavors. But maybe a little waste is better than someone making a lot of profit.
What would worry me with municipal administration of broadband would be the customer support I would get. But it isn't like TWC's customer support is world class. And would they care about outages? I work from home some days, and access is extremely important. 12/15/2017 2:02:47 PM

except that it's not profit motivated, so it can serve people who won't be profitable
you're that libertarian stereotype who wants privatized roads even though it means they won't have roads out to their house in the country because it wouldn't be profitable for anyone to build them 12/15/2017 2:04:19 PM

we pay for things we don't directly need in exchange for things we do.
those are both bad arguments, though. we all benefit from roads connecting cities to rural areas. we all benefit from an educated populace.

Another issue I have with municipal broadband is that it would open a gateway to yet another social safety net. Free internet.

And anyways, the internet is "free" already for most people via public libraries (apart from public transportation costs and and lack of free time). But it is such an integral part of life at this point that lack of home access is a serious disadvantage, and we would benefit on a societal level from giving open and instant access to everyone.

^^ Metered internet is not illegal. Lots of providers have soft caps. It has nothing to do with net neutrality.
Your water is metered. Do you pay more to take a shower than to use the dishwasher? Do you pay more to use faucets not partnered with your water provider? No, all water is equal.
That’s what net neutrality is. All data is equal.

politicians make choices that will affect their income after they leave office, corruption always finds a way. the only way to get money out of politics is to end the reasons the donors give the money
