did a little more roofing on mine today. my progress is slower than yours, but we're chipping away at it.

I'm going to take my gun safe out of the bedroom and put it out there, anchored to the concrete I think. I'll also build some shelves to keep ammo on, which will free up a lot of space inside the safe (which I need...I'm out of space for guns, due to one side being taken up by ammo and magazines).

I'll also build a workbench; I'm not sure if I want to build it solid, or build it so it hinges up against the wall out of the way. I have plenty of room (16'x24') to just build it in place, but maybe someday I'll wish I had those few extra feet?

I've even thought about building an additional platform with a hand winch that I could lower, with my miter saw, and maybe a table saw, etc on it...

I figured I'd just put something like this in there:

16'x24' is not a lot of area. I think you're going to be at max capacity quickly with workbenches and squat racks.

^^that thing will be saturated in no time. it's no match for Florida humidity. not worth the risk, imo.

^^^ true, but I also have a 2 car attached garage, and a big loft in it for storing things.

^^ apparently you throw that one in the oven when it indicates saturated. Maybe I could put 2 in there to last longer.

of course, if we're talking about a few days or a week or two, then prob not worth bothering with.

i would guess it would only last a couple weeks max. my safe is inside and i still use a silica pack. it's the kind you plug in the wall to dry out. i also pull all my guns out every few months and wipe them all down with some light oil. rust sucks.

gonna try to get the fishing stuff organized on the boat side of the shop this week. gonna build another 16 ft of shelf, put the frequently used rods on the wall in the back corner, put the infrequently used rods on the ceiling over the garage door, and build a short workbench for fishing tackle and such.

silica gel pack in florida will be saturated in a damn hurry. If you're dead set on putting the safe in the garage, you're going to need to run a dedicated dehumidifier.

and run a drain line outside so you're not dumping the bucket daily.

I've got a HVAC based water heater (doubles as mini garage AC/dehumidifier). I estimate it pulls 1.0-1.5L out of the air during the summer. It's a data point at least.

That sounds way too low (1 liter for the whole summer). I was running a dehumidifier in a garage in Raleigh a few years ago while I was temporarily storing my furniture in there. Emptied the bucket at least weekly and it held at least a liter (set to about 65%). Then I bought a hose and connected it to the hose port on the machine and ran it out of the garage.

fishing rod storage. the stuff i use most frequently is on the wall. the infrequently used rods are on the ceiling. also hung a pier/surf fishing cart on the wall and the bimini top for the boat on the ceiling (i never use the bimini):

workbench for fishing stuff. top is made from a solid core door i got from a nursing home:

got some active speakers and made some little shelves for them. i just plug up my phone and use spotify.

Anyone had a garage built in Raleigh recently? Looking at a ballpark on what I should expect. Looking at building a 24x30 with 10/2 pitched a roof. Hardieplank siding, gutters, 70a sub panel. Lights/garage opener, etc.

depends on if you'll just hire a GC or if you'll handle permits and such yourself, what kind of insulation and inside finish, etc., but i would guess at least $35-40k

Completely unfinished inside. We've gotten a few estimates. Seems like a lot of companies don't include everything in their estimate (painting, gutters etc). Estimate with the contractor we are comfortable with is 46K. I thought it was a little high but I guess that seems correct.

I think you might get away with a little bit less, but then, I've priced them in Pensacola, which is probably slightly cheaper. I think those figures, if they're off at all, aren't dramatically off.

_______________

Got the roof totally done on mine now. Just need to frame in the front for a garage door, then have them come out and install one (and an opener), and have a mason brick in the front fascia.

Well, I mean, none of the electrical is done yet, but it's almost a functional shop. I think I'll come in <$10k (16x24', elec/lights/garage door opener, window unit AC, brick front/hardi siding. I did a lot of the work, though, and a friend did all the rest so far for next to nothing.

I got mine done (i think a pic is in my gallery) for 36ish, which had 0 finishing inside. 11k of that was concrete and grading for the driveway and slab. The guys that did it didn't do some of the trim properly, but overall it was a decent price for the speed and quality. They didn't caulk or paint. 22x24

Mine's finally almost done...just need to paint the outside and have some brickwork done around the front fascia.

We are in the midst of completing a barn on our farm...

We have a lift going in...what other items are a must have?
I figure a large air compressor for Air wrench items.

Anything else?

if you're gonna put a shower in there, setup a heated floor. http://www.radiantec.com/energy-efficiency/how-hot-water-heaters-save/

Anyone here know some reputable and easy to work with garage contractors they could recommend in the Raleigh area? Looking at building a garage with an accessory unit / in-law suite above it on our lot.

I highly recommend AVOIDING carolina custom builders. Buncha scumbags that thought I didn't know anything and kept trying to force cost cutting measures on me.
