Toasted Which Wich Italian is my jam

I'd put Firehouse and Which Wich above Jersey Mike's, otherwise a pretty solid list.

i once again have to state that the quality of a Harris Teeter sub is very dependent on the employee making the sandwich. I have had some great subs and some really shitty ones all because the person making it was completely incompetent. And i can't figure out why they are so against cutting the bread in half and "building the sandwich. Instead they make this "bread boat" with all lettuce and toppings crammed in the wedge cut out of the sandwich. This either A) requires you to eat the sandwich sideways so that you have equal bread-meat-toppings per bite or B) eat it regular and have one bite that's all bread and some meat and one bite that's all toppings. Option B usually results in toppings spilling out of the sandwich after one bite.

I also think it's worth pointing out that any local deli usually blows these sandwiches out of the water

NY Bagel and Deli is probably my favorite, but I've had others too that meet that standard.

^ i agree I've had the best and the worst from there.

Keep in mind i think both HT and jersey mike's use boar's head meat so it has the capability if they know what they are doing and keep their bread fresh .

which wich IMHO doesn't even belong in this battle the sandwiches that they truly shine with are the non standard sandwiches. They are good, but because you can do crazy things with them... Jersey mikes still has better breads/ meats etc.

Firehouse makes me wonder if you have any clue what you are talking about... either that or there are random ones that are way better then the rest. (the one in the south end era of clt i remember being good but haven't had a decent sandwich from them since i left)

I know Jersey Mike's doesn't use Boar's Head...think HT does though.

Yeah I need to update my ranking pasted above. These days I find Firehouse to be pretty gross...the bread is oily, in fact everything seems kinda slimy and not very fresh tasting.

^ that's a pretty decent list, but Jersey Mikes is way better than a JJ, even when JJ gets extra points for delivery. I'd rank Quiznos above Subway too, if only by a bit.

HT subs can be good (mostly the philly cheese steak), but their bread is usually too tough/stale for my liking

Let me clarify the wawas in the Philadelphia area make awesome sandwiches. The one I had in Tampa did not have good bread.

What the hell happened to Quizno's, anyway? They used to be pretty good, then they got not as good rather abruptly, then they all closed. I don't even know where one is anymore. Also does anyone remember when Lil' Dino's actually had full-size shops? Not the crappy miniature version in Talley. You could get fries or rings with your sub, not just chips.

Firehouse used to be good back in 2011-2012. Haven't been to one since then. I liked it at the time, so if they've screwed it up since then, that's a shame.

I ate so many tally sub's from Dino's. I think the secret was each and every one was made with love.

That place is solid. Too bad it's 15+ minutes from my house and not on the way to anything for me.

HT doesn't use Boar's Head meat unless you ask for it, and it's $2 extra...which then makes your HT sub more expensive than Jersey Mike's. Which is ridiculous and totally not worth it.

^^I always get the Philly Cheesesteak from Penn Station. And fries. Did I mention they have fries? And good fries, where they don't even cut the potato until you order them.

I just have some major issues with one of the better sandwich chains not even being discussed much, when there are multiple locations in the Triangle, yet we have TWWers who have eaten at hundreds of Subway restaurants throughout their travels.

So solid. The one in North Raleigh is a perfect distance from me...any closer and it would be dangerous Note there's one off Tryon in Cary and another in Morrisville.

Anybody know of any other delis I should check out? The only other one I've ate at recently is Sami's off Westgate...damn good sub.

Don't think I've ever ate there. Will have to give it a shot, I spose.

I got a philly cheese steak sub from HT last friday... it was almost inedible. Calling the meat luke-warm would be an overstatement. (is luke-cool a word?)

I believe the words you are looking for are room temperature or possibly even cool. I don't think you need to make up a word for your description.

if you're in raleigh, you can't sleep on boondini's, at least that was the case 15 years ago.

I can't really compare because I only order Jimmy John's...but they are pretty freaking solid down here. And they are fast and cheap. Can't really beat that.

We also hit them up on the way to the beach during the summer. Order online as you're packing for the beach, pick up in drive-thru on way out, have cheap, tasty subs for lunch on the beach, profit.

no... It wasn't cold, and it wasn't cool. I could tell they probably had the meat in a water bath to heat it up, but some of the meat was a little warmer than room temperature, but some was obviously still chilled. it was an odd temperature sensation to be sure.

So you had some meat that was lukewarm and some meat that was still chilled/cool? I'm still not seeing the need to contact Oxford for a new dictionary entry.

Smath, if they overload your sub with meat and then put it in the microwave it'll never get hot enough. Always tell them to put it back in the oven twice as long. (i.e. the full baking duration twice). And ABSOLUTELY do that if they're putting more than one sub in at a time. Learned this the hard way several times...

I didn't even know there was more than one of these. The one I said was 15+ minutes away is the one in Cary off Tryon. North Raleigh and Morrisville would both be even further (though perhaps the Morrisville one is do-able for work lunches).

That would be interesting, but if we're getting to pick bread here I'm taking some kind of a hard roll...something crusty.

I don't want crusty bread for my sub. Shit will tear up the top/inside of your mouth. It's okay to have a decent "shell", but I want a soft roll. I do like Jimmy Johns bread.

Went to Jersey Mike's for lunch and had the number 8 regular with jalapeƱos, pickles, and juice. Been trying to cut out mayo recently, and you really don't miss it with the oil and vinegar. The downside, as has been mentioned, is that you pretty much have to eat the whole sub in one sitting or it turns into a soggy mess.

Jersey Mike's is the best chain "pure sandwich" place IMO. They don't toast subs, they don't have a new sub every month, they don't have all the fancy sauces, but they have the best tasting final product with the freshest ingredients. Subway is pretty much a joke at this point, all the fatties brainwashed by Jared thinking their eating healthy and still getting double cheese and extra mayo. Whichwich is good, but there's so potential for weird combinations there that I usually only go when I'm high. Firehouse has gone downhill severely in the past half decade, and Quizzno's seems to have mysteriously vanished from the face of the Earth.

And TreeTwista10, I definitely feel you on Penn Station. My only issue is that a chessesteak and fries is such a heavy meal, its usually more than I'm trying to eat for lunch, lest I feel sluggish for the rest of the day. Its a better dinner option, but I've never really been a fan of sandwiches for dinner. Seems like that's something poor people do.
