SIGH, we have been exposed on offense with the press. Our defense always sucked so nothing was surprising there. Our bigs need to step up more both offensively and defensively. They get outplayed soundly by any decent big man which is not good when we're heading into ACC play. Barber should play aggressive the entire game as when he's passive he always do something stupid. Oh yeah one more thing, fuck Cincinnati. 12/30/2014 5:59:40 PM |

If we can only improve a few things, you have to go with press break and having the bigs play better defense.
Asking the bigs to increase offense is too much and, frankly, I'd prefer for the guard to take more shots over the bigs. 12/30/2014 6:05:03 PM |

IIRC we made Abu more of a priority and then started on Clark late. By then it was probably too late.
IMO, we're just soft. And it's painfully obvious vs really physical teams like and Cincy. Lacey was bad today. Turner was non-existent and hasn't been much of a factor since the Tennessee game. Our big men really don't have any offensive game other than put backs and the occasional Washington jumper or hook.
Cat needs to be more aggressive like he was in the second halves of this game and La Tech.

this was a beatable team we just lost to at home by double digits. we lost a winnable game against WVU by double digits. we lost at home to wofford. we had to come back from being down by 18 to beat LA tech at home. we're going to win 2 of the next 5, best case scenario, and not against the good teams. it's pretty unlikely we're going to build a strong enough resume in the next 2 months to be on the bubble unless a miracle happens. and you can't just maintain that we'll probably do it just because we did it the last 2 years12/30/2014 6:28:37 PM |

The only surprise so far this year for me was Wofford. Purdue could have and probably should have been a win too but losing to WVU and Cincy was expected, because hoping hard enough just doesn't cut it.
It doesn't matter how many points we lose by, if we pulled within 5 at the end of this game it still wouldn't have mattered. This isn't the BCS.
We'll go somewhere around 9-8 the rest of the way, finish 19-12 with 10 ACC wins. Should put us around #6 in the ACC and should be good enough to make the tourney.
If we end up in the NIT instead, it will be because of Purdue and Wofford and have nothing to do with this game.

where are those 9 wins coming from? right now i think we lose 10 of those ACC games. pitt, UVA twice, duke, UNC twice, @miami, notre dame, @UL, syracuse. i'd love to finish 6th in the ACC, but i don't think it's happening.12/30/2014 7:39:25 PM |

Just finished watching, pretty pathetic. Lacey had a bad night, Turner continued to be worthless as he has the last few games, can't break a press, didn't run any offense and just passed around the perimeter mostly. 12/30/2014 9:35:57 PM |

Its way too early to talk about firing him. This year is a pass but next year will be a hot seat year and he would need a solid recruiting class with no transfers in order to survive missing the tournament this year and next year. 12/30/2014 11:51:44 PM |

Yep
This is not our year. We're down in a year the ACC is very strong. Unless major adjustments are made in the way we're playing, I don't expect us to be in the NCAA Tournament.

That was brutal. Usually our offense can make up for a lack of toughness, but not with this lineup.
I really wish we'd drop the UCLA High Post this season. We just don't have bigs that can score consistently or pass effectively, so trying to force it to them is pointless. We should go to a smaller lineup and run traditional pick and rolls. We've got too much scoring talent on the wings not to use it.
If they're going to stick with the high post, put somebody like Ralston or Martin in the high post so there's at least the threat of a shot. Outside of a streaky Washington, none of our bigs are knocking down that FT line jumper.
Also, Dez might give us headaches, but he's the one guy who consistently plays with energy. He needs more minutes 12/31/2014 10:08:14 AM |

Pretty much every game we lose we have to make up for with a win in conference. So we are now what 1-3 in the games we needed so add 3 extra ACC wins we need and we arent going 13-5 in the ACC so yeah... 12/31/2014 10:35:19 AM |

^^Right now, the high post is our 3rd or 4th option when we run our sets. Most of our offense has been run on the wings to get a shot for Lacey or Turner. If that is shut down, we are running pick and roll with Cat at the top of the key. Only then are we looking to one of the post players.
Quote : | "put somebody like Ralston so there's at least the threat of a shot." |

Seeing as how Washington is the only big man that makes the free throw jumper it seems like he should be in the high post a lot more but I usually don't see him there a lot. He did great there last year against Syracuse. 12/31/2014 11:07:16 AM |

Biggest thing with Gott is not calling TOs (Chew them bastards out down 20) and playing Freeman less when he is the only big that rebounds worth a damn.12/31/2014 11:09:24 AM |

^Great post. Because that hasn't been rehashed about a million times already.
Gott brings in top 25 classes each year and inherited a good roster. Yet we are regressing each year it seems. Year four with a roster full of a team he recruited and we still do not play ACC level defense.
Archie just took Dayton to an Elite Eight in year three. Dude is going to be a great coach for years. I am Gott fan after the Sid Lowe experiment, but I think most people considered him a 5-10 year fix to improve the program for the next guy. And he has done exactly that. In a few years, he will have plateaued (Hopefully he hasn't already) and we will be searching. Hopefully Arch will still be at Dayton. I seriously doubt he would work for Debbie though. 12/31/2014 11:43:10 AM |

Gott's teams have never played defense no matter where he coached. That's just part of who he is as a coach. That was not a secret when we hired him. I remember it being discussed before we ever played a single game under Gott. Now, I'm not defending Gott's lack of defense. But it goes against Gott's entire coaching career to date to expect his team's to have good defenses.
^Yeah that's easily the most mad and frustrated I've heard Gottfried after a game.
