I'm no capologist, but I read earlier they structured his contract so the burden on the cap would drop off immensely right when they need to re-sign Luke.

If that's true it's a stroke of genius by Gettlemen to set himself up nicely.

it's a ridiculous amount of money, but given what Kapernick and Tannehill are making, I guess that's the price you gotta pay for a QB

if ^ is true, though, that is a smart way of structuring it at least

Yeah isn't like 30 of the 60 guaranteed mil in the form of bonuses?

Yeah I think they definitely structured this knowing we have to sign Luke in the next 2 years. This year he'll be making I read 30+ million.

Front loaded contracts are the smart way to do it, and Gettleman's been preparing for this since the day he walked in the door. We're actually setup quite nicely cap wise starting in 2016 and on, even with Cam's contract. It's pretty remarkable that this team's made the playoffs the last 2 years while cleaning up Hurney's mess.

5/100 is basically what I hoped for. Actually thought it would be even more guaranteed than it was (was thinking something insane like 75m just to avoid him asking for the moon in years/non-guaranteed figures)

My biggest concern with Cam is that he gets Culpepper'd or just starts to lose effectiveness around age 30 so this is a good contract in that respect.

Culpepper. There's a name I haven't heard in a while.

I feel like Cam loves the game more than Culpepper ever did on top of having 10x the talent.

He also had a bad knee injury which cam hasn't yet

I guess that's what he meant by "Culpepper d"

I forgot all about that actually. I just remembered him falling off and then being a complete embarrassment in Miami.

The Dolphins actually chose him over Brees that year in free agency because Bress was coming off shoulder surgery and they were concerned he'd never be the same. Whoops.

He also posted a 39/11/4717/69.2/110.9 line at 27 right before he got hurt. Granted, he had Randy Moss, but Nate Burleson was his top target that year. Don't act like Culpepper couldn't play. We'd collectively defecate if Cam put up anything close to that.

Quote :
"Newton’s cap hits
2015 — $13 million
2016 — $19.5 million
2017 — $20.17 million
2018 — $21.5 million
2019 — $23.2 million
2020 — $21.1 million"

This is really a very cap friendly deal, by the time those large increases in 2018/19 hit, who knows what the salary cap will be. Panthers are setup to win for the next 2-3 years at least. We'll struggle to keep all our good players after that, and retirement will take names like Olsen and Davis, so the time to win is now.

Also the full guarantee on Cam's contract is only $31 million, but considering how unlikely it is that we cut him by the start of 2016, it's actually $54 million.

Even if it's mostly a PR move, it's cool to see the Panthers reaching out to the Charleston community and victims. Maybe it's just because I live in NC, but I always see the Panthers as an NC team. But embracing both Carolinas is kinda neat.

Sorry for the corny ass post guys.

^ Good for him for giving so much of his own money to the victims, but how quickly we forget how much money he extorted from taxpayers for stadium upgrades...

I know, I know, take it to TSB.

to be fair, he had to get cut in order for the panthers to bring someone else into camp.

can't just put somebody on IR right now, they have to go through waivers. Just like last year when Tyler Gaffney got hurt. The Panthers cut him, but the patriots picked him up. I doubt anybody does that with Hill, though.

Saw one Panther reporter on twitter say Norman was listed as 3rd string on initial depth chart...but when I clicked the link to the depth chart he was listed as a starter...not sure if they changed it or what. Would be ridiculous if they demoted him because Cam got his panties in a wad.

Only thing I really want to see tonight is Michael Oher. If he can hold up against a good Bills’ pass rush, I’ll feel a lot better about this year’s team.

Oher will be interesting. I want to see Shaq and Funchess make some plays. But ultimately, just avoid injuries like the Deadskins had.

Funchess impressed following the drop on his first career NFL reception attempt. Reminds me of a young Moose, or a less athletic KB. Would've liked to have seen Cam throw to him because DA threw a beautiful ball on the sideline catch. But Cam threw a nice pass to Ginn on a similar route/throw. Definitely like the 2 big wideouts though. Didn't really notice Shaq much tonight.

Oher got beat a couple times but still looks better than Byron Bell. Just need the young backs to be fast learners at picking up blocking assignments. I don't think any of our QBs got sacked so that's good. O-Line looked serviceable in pass protection against a great defensive line. Granted it's preseason and no game planning but still.

Offense in general looked better than expected. And keep in mind 3 of our starting 4 Defensive linemen (CJ, Star, KK) didn't play so hopefully that early long drive by Buffalo against mostly 2nd string DL won't be a habit.

--

nm about no sacks. I guess Webb got sacked but he was scrambling so might've counted as TFL
