Smith also didn't punch the starting quarterback in the face, making him miss a quarter of the season. Quarterback is a bit more important than a corner. 8/11/2015 8:14:34 PM |

Steve Smith ended a guys career because he sucker punched him in the film room and broke his face. Sorry I'm not a panthers homer who can't see that Steve Smith is a piece of garbage. And that's not even bringing up the Ken Lucas incident.
Also, I would like to apologize to this guy who punched Geno Smith in the face. Turns out it wasn't a sucker punch and Smith deserved it. I'm sorry I compared him to Smith.] 8/12/2015 1:53:12 PM |

^Do you really think he is going to miss a game this season due to "Deflategate"? I mean the only way that actually happens at this point is if he takes a settlement with a suspension. Even if the Federal Court rules against him by September 4th, he will appeal to the 2nd circuit and get an injunction letting him play out the season.
Plus, based on Wednesday, it seems that Judge Berman is not buying the Wells Report bullshit. You know since even the NFL admitted that there is no direct evidence, they had no independent investigator (the NFL used the word red herring), and they just assumed the balls were deflated even though at the time of the measurements no one from the NFL realized that the environment will actually change the readings over time.
It is just stupid that this has been going on for 7 months. Isn't it Goodell's job to protect the league from being part of lasting controversy? Seems since he took over all he has done is lead the league into more and more controversial situations. From Ray Rice to Deflategate. And the majority of owners don't care what he does, because the league keeps making ridiculous amounts of money. I mean the Pittsburgh v. Minnesota preseason game had a higher viewership rating than the Stanley Cup. 8/14/2015 8:01:40 AM |

2 things:
1. I really don't care about Deflategate. It's histrionic, melodramatic, and I just want to watch football.
2. The notion that teams and players control the footballs is beyond stupid for reasons this "scandal" show. Game balls should be entirely inside the control of the referees as a constant variable throughout a game. 8/14/2015 8:50:36 AM |
justinh524 Sprots Talk Mod 27836 Posts user info edit post |
yep. the league should provide/control all balls. also, use the same damn ball for offense and kicking. 8/14/2015 8:53:56 AM |
Zeus2110 Starting Lineup 57 Posts user info edit post |
I agree 100%. The fact these quarterbacks get the balls weeks ahead of time to manipulate is crazy. I mean over the past few months we have found out the crazy ways that Brady, Eli and Peyton break them in.
I don't see a problem with the kicking balls as they are. Currently the kicking balls usually come directly out of the box. Teams don't really get much time to screw around with them.
However, this whole situation should change how the balls are handled. The NFL makes billions of dollars. It can't hire 2 guys for each game to control the balls? Make sure no one touches them? The NFL probably doesn't want to spend the money. Remember, the NFL doesn't want to put extra cameras near the goal line because it would cost money. The NFL doesn't care that it would help make the replay of potential touchdown plays easier and clearer, it only cares about the cost. 8/14/2015 9:01:25 AM |
Zeus2110 Starting Lineup 57 Posts user info edit post |
^^ The NFL should just use the same game balls for both teams. Rotate all the balls and make each team use them. Wouldn't that guarantee no team gets an advantage? 8/14/2015 9:02:46 AM |

really, the biggest thing to consider when signing a QB is that there are a very limited amount of good (not even great, just good) QBs available. that's why guys like Dalton or Flacco get huge deals. because the alternative to not locking up somebody as average as Dalton is that you get stuck with a shitty veteran like Josh McCown or Brian Hoyer, or taking a complete gamble on a rookie.
but it'll definitely be interesting to see what his contract ends up being. 8/18/2015 2:47:40 PM |

Did you not read the article?
Quote : | "More important than Manning’s base salary of $17 million in 2016 is his cap number of $19.75 million.
So if the Giants use the franchise tag on Manning in 2016, he’ll make 20 percent more than $19.75 million. Which (abacus engaged) equates to $23.7 million. Which is $1.7 million more than the current high-water mark of $22 million per year, set by Aaron Rodgers in 2013.
And that’s assuming the Giants simply use the non-exclusive version of the franchise tag. If they go exclusive, the number for 2016 will be closer to $25 million.
So why wouldn’t Eli want more than $22 million on a long-term deal? While it can be spun by the team that he’s looking to be the “highest-paid player in the league,” the truth is that Eli is simply trying to take fair advantage of the leverage his current deal creates.
That leverage consists of another 20-percent raise in 2017, when his franchise tender would be $28.44 million under the non-exclusive tag and roughly $30 million under the exclusive tag. That’s a $50.44 million minimum and a $55 million maximum over two years.
So why should Manning do a long-term deal that pays less than $50 million over the first two years?
If that $25 million per year annual average makes him the highest-paid player in the NFL, so be it. It’s not Manning’s fault that no one else has managed to exceed the $25 million barrier." |
Pay the man!

Honestly, I hope the giants pay $25 million/year to Eli. It will be hilarious when he completes <60% of his passes and is top 5 in interceptions. The other New Jersey team will be paying a bunch of shitty QBs much less to do the same thing.
Next thing you know, people will start saying he is HOF material. 8/18/2015 9:28:58 PM |

Eli has only had 2 really bad INT seasons with 25 in 2010 and 27 in 2013.
In 2013, the top 2 Giants receivers both spent time on the DL, and at times the 3 receivers on the field had less than 5 years of combined NFL experience. He was sacked a career-high 39 times due to an aged and hurting O-Line. I'm not saying Eli was in any way blameless for the INT numbers, but clearly there was plenty of blame to go around.
By comparison, last season Eli only threw 14 INTs (his 2nd best since becoming a 16-game starter), 30 TDs (2nd best), and had the highest completion percentage of his career. That was with only one star receiver (who didn't really rise tot he occasion until halfway through the season).
So with Victor Cruz coming back, there's plenty of room to believe that this could be a solid season.

Cruz is coming back from an injury that many players have struggled to come back from(ended Michael Clayton's career). Even before the injury he had a lot of drops and didn't look as explosive as year's past. For a guy that relies on speed, think he's going to struggle, with the Patella Tendon injury he's very likely to never get back to the speed he had before.
I mean Eli has 3 good WRs, but Eli really only flourishes when he has a good running game. I'm not quite sure that OL or those RBs are going to accomplish that.
Plus the odds of ODBJr repeating his performance from last year is highly unlikely. 8/19/2015 8:45:14 AM |
bdmazur ?? ????? ?? 14957 Posts user info edit post |
I know it's a big if, but IF Victor Cruz comes back at even 80% of what he was, OBJ won't need to repeat last year's numbers.
And besides, Eli raises the level of his receivers (people forget that Cruz was undrafted, not to mention the hype around Steve Smith and Mario Manningham who became nobody's after they left the Giants for more money) 8/19/2015 12:26:54 PM |

He's not better than Green. They're both very, very good. But they are also very different types of receiver.
Also, Tampa has no reason to trade Glennon. He's a good backup who's very, very cheap. Somebody would have to give Tampa a ridiculous offer to get him. 8/29/2015 8:44:32 PM |
