My problem is, where do you draw the line on what is an "assault" rifle? If it looks scary? I have an old ass Marlin .22 my grandfather gave me. It is semi auto and can shoot pretty damn fast. That said, its just .22, and it has the tube reload thing, not a clip, so it would certainly not be the first choice if somebody wanted to carry out an attack. Would that be considered an assault rifle? I'm sure they sell kits that would let me convert it to a cool looking gun, but I don't care that much. I just like plinking cans and water bottles with it.

If you can explain to me why any law abiding citizen needs an assault rifle for something that a handgun or rifle/shotgun cant handle in any normal day to day situation please change my mind.

AR15s aren't legal in California, despite them being used in this scenario.

I hunt with rifles that could be considered "assault rifles". I bought them with the thought being that if shit hits the fan and this country comes unglued, having rifles with common parts and ammunition to what our own army uses might come in handy. They are in no way less lethal

I'm not arguing a semi-automatic rifle is better for self-defense than a pistol, I'm arguing that rifles are much less dangerous given that they aren't something easily concealed. The homicide numbers reflect this also, knives result in much more deaths than "assualt" rifles.

but the assault rifle designation has more to do with the appearance of the weapon than the effectiveness, so your question is somewhat beside the point

how does putting a barrel shroud on a rifle make it more dangerous?

(and as many have pointed out, the AR-15 is already illegal in CA)

There has been more pro-gun legislation in the last two years than in the last 20 years combined.

Black Friday was an all-time record for guns purchased in a single day.

Less people have a gun in their home:

Most people want tighter restrictions on getting guns:

Overwhelming majority of people want to close background check loopholes:

Most people believe ease of access causes gun violence:

It's 100% the NRA blocking gun reform Americans want. Why else would they ban the CDC from studying the issue? They know that having people informed hurts their cause (which is whipping up fear so people buy more guns).

France would need 16 terrorists attacks like that every year to even get close to the firearm murder rate per capita of the united states.

and then they'd still have to quadruple their normal run rate of firearm murders per capita to finally get all the way to the US's rate.

(this assumes a population of 66.03M for France, 318.9M for the US, and the firearm murder rate per capita found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate)

^^ the baby is just as much a victim as the ones they killed, IMO. first, she gets to grow up without ever meeting her parents. second, when she finds the truth one day, she will have to live with it and will never understand why her parents did what they did. third, all those factors combined might have a very bad effect on her mental and emotional health once she is a teen or an adult.

i can't understand how those bastards can do that to their own child who was just born a few months ago. (needless to say, they are demonic in the first place for killing so many people, but doing that to their child is just the icing on the [barbaric] cake)

Think you're missing the point. The fact that terrorists in France can 1) acquire actual assault rifles (select fire weapons, not these lookalikes we have available in the US) and 2) kill mass quantities of civilians AT WILL in one of the most tightly controlled western societies in the world - means you will never be able to outlaw away terrorist events. Nor even reduce them by making any associated crimes carry a stiffer punishment - they plan to go out with a bang. And keep in mind this was in a country WITH ZERO pre-existing legal assault weapons to pull from. Snap your fingers and magically remove all 30 million in the US and yep, will still happen.

These guys in CA already illegally modified the guns they used, no bullet button, > 10 rnd magazines. What laws would stop them from doing that?

Where can we buy pipe bombs from? Want to outlaw the sale of galvanized steel to Devout Muslims?

What else needs to happen before you stop being a sheep and start blaming the people who commit these crimes instead of the tool they use to commit them?

Doesn't matter what race or religion these shooters are -they're terrorists and there's only one way to stop them that works 100% of the time: Bullets to the face of bad guys from good guys.

you can't do away with terrorist events.

you can greatly reduce everyday homicide, suicide, and other firearm related crimes.

how many pipe bombs have been used to kill spouses over domestic disputes this year?

you're missing the point. the point is that terrorism is rare but mass shootings are not. assuming we cannot stop terrorist attacks like this, many shootings could be prevented with more stringent regulations.

France is a perfect example of a country that still has terrorist attacks, but doesn't have many other types of mass shootings like us.

Why is the gun control issue Black & White. I don't understand why logically it can't be reasoned that in lite of events that a little more scrutiny should be taken on who possesses what weapons. I also understand that often guns like the semi-auto AR15 always take heat in these situations because they "look scary", even though a semi-auto hunting rifle chambered in 30-06 would do more damage and a pistol creates a much greater opportunity to sneak a firearm into a populated event.

Otherwise whenever the topic of more controls on guns occurs, right-wingers go on a fucking toddler tantrum hissy fit about how liberals are trying to take all guns away, taking guns from cold dead fingers, and guns keep us from being Nazi Germany, etc

I don't even think Obama is advocating eliminating the right to bear arms from law-abiding citizens. While he might secretly wish for a gun-free state from what I read he seems to pragmatic regarding the realities of politics to advocate such a change.

"Gun control" is a trigger word for republicans. Sane people need to choose a different term or phrase when talking about the issue.

I propose using the term " fixing the background check loophole".

Ah OK, so you admit terrorism cannot be stopped and you are using this terrorist event to impose further gun control that is unrelated to this event, gotcha.

Still waiting to hear this magical filter that would have stopped this CA event from happening. Are we sticking with forbidding Devout Muslims from buying handguns?

Here is the thing that no one is saying.

The true use of guns it to arm the population AGAINST the government. That is the whole point. Its not about maintaining deer populations or defending your house. Its about keeping the power of the government in your personal life at an agreeable level. That's why it is important to keep access to guns free. There is nothing you can do about deranged people, but on the other hand more people die from smoking tobacco every year than have ever been killed in purely gun acts.

'Gun control' is a distraction method used to get people recanting the same positions over and over again.

I think this loops directly into the 'black lives matter' shit. The part that is missing is 'veterans lives matter'. The percentage of the population that SHOULD have guns are black males and veterans. Isn't it funny that demographically these two groups are pinned in opposing political factions? The real enemy is the entity that records your every move, sells you a bunch of shitty plastic shit from china that doesn't actually make your life any better and profits from bombing hospitals and 'terrorists' who live in huts in the middle of a desert full of Oil, Rare Earth Minerals and Opium.

Or as yung shakespear said:

Be it thy course to busy giddy minds
With foreign quarrels; that action, hence borne out,
May waste the memory of the former days.

You are pushing your political agenda on an unrelated terrorist event, just like your boss man.

In the most strict gun control state in the country. Even moron's suggestion of a "loophole" does not even exist in CA. All transactions must be done through an FFL. ARs are already banned in CA, and the existing inventory owned by Californians have to be modified to not have an easily removable magazine as well as no larger magazines than 10 rounds. Those laws on the books had no effect.

CA gun laws are far and above what is already being dropped on the floor as soon as it comes out of a libtard lawmakers mouth, have fun daydreaming about a magical solution.

Yeah because your hunting rifle and 12-gauge shotgun are going to be so useful when your back-woods militia gets mowed down by the AC-130 flying at
10,000 feet or rudimentary pipe bomb against platoon of M1 Abrams tanks........

Anyone who thinks their cute firearms collection is thwarting the installment of totalitarian authority is fooling themselves all the way to the Ted
Cruz rally.

On that note i still support guns for personal defense against intruders/criminals.

The 10-round magainze laws in CA and similar law in NY are stupid too. I would assert these as more "feel-good" laws then anything.
