Re: Green new deal
There has been a lot of noise about the lack of nuclear power. I just wanted to clarify that its not because we are against nuclear power, its just that its not something that is feasible within the context of the 10-15 year time period we are trying to make the shift within.
Construction time alone is 7-10 years but when you add in the permitting, licensing, and litigation involved, you'd have to tack on up to another 10 years. So now, we are talking about up to 20 years before you can get a nuclear power plant online and I haven't even talked about the waste issue yet. Thats 20 more years of fossil fuels.
With that said, it'd be wise to leave that out of a plan where the goal is to IMMEDIATELY shift energy production to renewables.
The green new deal resolution is pretty flawless other than the fact that its too vague. All of the criticism has been about things that were either only on the FAQ, or were just made up by special interests. 5/2/2019 8:23:10 PM |

But on a serious note, fuck NBC and anyone who takes the individual shaming approach. Theres nothing individuals can do to stop climate change. Its like 100 companies responsible for 71% of the emissions. Greta has become the leading voice against climate inaction by global leaders. Last year, she organized Friday school strikes to go to protest the Swedish government. Her protest spread quickly throughout her school and the entire country. Then it spread across Europe and the whole world. She just went to NY for the UN climate summit which is another case of the world's leaders getting together to pat themselves on the back for weak action that won't actually solve the problem (paris).
Her speech was more factual than anything I've ever heard from a politician and when she talks, you can feel the human emotion; something that is normally absent from this type of event. The way she expresses the anger we all share is what makes her so remarkable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW3IQ-ke43w
Her movement is so big because it has captured the feelings of young people all over the world. I teach about climate change and almost all of the students feel betrayed like her when they learn about what is happening and how world leaders are dealing with it. They are young enough to understand no amount of short term financial stability is worth risking everything going forward. 9/24/2019 3:41:18 PM |

There are some things that could be done, but it would appear that most of these kids have been brainwashed into believing the alarmist message, something almost every scientist would say is highly unlikely to occur. 9/25/2019 8:24:24 AM |

Reference any of the UN IPCC Working Group reports that come out every few years (last was 2017 I believe). There are always a few forecasts/predictions, with the greatest certainly placed on the 1-2 in the middle of the spectrum. The high end one (high end being highest temperature and greatest disruption to the climate) always has a small percentage chance of occurring (in their estimation), but that's the scary scenario that alarmists latch on to.
Perhaps the media coverage was biased (to only show extremists views) but I didn't see any kids out there protesting and crying about the end of the world based on any of the IPCC's views of what will actually happen. To clarify, I'm not referring to the politically biased "summary for policymaker" reports.
If you follow the science, then watch/read what stuff like Greta says (and no doubt believes), yeah it doesn't match up.

Earth's ice imbalance https://tc.copernicus.org/articles/15/233/2021/
Quote : | "... satellite observations and numerical models... show that Earth lost 28 trillion tonnes of ice between 1994 and 2017. Arctic sea ice (7.6 trillion tonnes), Antarctic ice shelves (6.5 trillion tonnes), mountain glaciers (6.1 trillion tonnes), the Greenland ice sheet (3.8 trillion tonnes), the Antarctic ice sheet (2.5 trillion tonnes), and Southern Ocean sea ice (0.9 trillion tonnes) have all decreased in mass..." |
Quote : | "The rate of ice loss has risen by 57?% since the 1990s – from 0.8 to 1.2 trillion tonnes per year – owing to increased losses from mountain glaciers, Antarctica, Greenland and from Antarctic ice shelves. During the same period, the loss of grounded ice from the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets and mountain glaciers raised the global sea level by 34.6?±?3.1?mm. The majority of all ice losses were driven by atmospheric melting (68?% from Arctic sea ice, mountain glaciers ice shelf calving and ice sheet surface mass balance), with the remaining losses (32?% from ice sheet discharge and ice shelf thinning) being driven by oceanic melting..." |
