Memphis is fucking nuts. They are still in it for the #1 PG, #1 SF and #1 C (though Favors is highly unlikely). They have already signed the #1 SG.
Honestly, why is Memphis the biggest recruiting juggernaut in college basketball right now? Is Calipari THAT great of a coach to play for? Is the ability to dominate a mid-major conference important to these kids? We know they can recruit anyone with a pulse there since they can recruit easier (unlike 5 of the 6 BCS conferences -- SEC doesn't have more stringent recruiting rules from what I recall), but there has to be more to it...

True that, point taken, and hopefully it does sway his decision, if he was thinking about Memphis. (And yeah, no knock on Lorenzo, realling looking forward to seeing him suit up.)

Brass Monkey All American 13560 Posts user info edit post |
The white guy, Matt Nover, played for Bob Knight which is why he was in the movie. Knight had some influence in the movie. Some say that Knight was very mad at Steve Alford when he told Knight that he didn't want to be in the movie. There is actually an NC State connection to the movie. The movie was filmed in Frankfort, Indiana, which is where Everett Case coached the high school boys basketball team to 4 state championships. The gym where the Frankfort High boy's basketball team plays is called Everett Case Arena. This gym is the one which is home to the fictitious Western University in the film.

^ New Mexico's University Arena, aka The Pit. It can get pretty loud in there. It's most famous for being the place in which NC State shocked the world and beat Houston led by two of the NBA's Top 50 players of all time in Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. That was also the last time the MOP of the NCAA Tournament came from the team that lost in the championship game.

John Calipari is a chickenshit.
I'm not saying he isn't a good coach, because he is. I just think he is a coward because he had the opportunity to come coach in the best basketball league, and go head-to-head with two of the best coaches in the game today (and probably all-time, at least in the case of Coach K).
He had his opportunity, and he squandered it. 11/19/2008 12:57:38 AM |

i think that's the general consensus in a lot of circles. but i don't think you can call the guy a coward for not moving to the ACC if our athletic office can't get their shit together and convince him, or anyone else higher than sidney lowe on our priority list, that it'd be a good decision to coach here.11/19/2008 11:46:20 AM |

Calipari was set to come here but took off as soon as Lee stood for our Admission Regulations (not just ours, the entire ACC's). Calipari can't bring those type of kids to the ACC... it just doesn't work. He doesn't want to play 2nd fiddle to Roy/Coach K to start with, and if he can't bring those kinda recruits in here... there is no way he could compete.
There is a reason he is in the C-USA and not the Big 12, SEC, Pac-10, Big East or ACC.11/19/2008 12:20:28 PM |

i agree completely with this. I fully blame our athletic department for not being able to hire anyone above Sidney Lowe on our "wish list" regardless of whether he works out or not. I just don't fully blame them for Calipari just because no one could really ever be sure if he was even serious about coming here to coach.
It would take a bold guy to come and compete with K and Roy every year in recruiting and on the court. Calipari has never taken a college job where he would have much competition. UMASS and Memphis do not play in tough conferences.

Why not? Post (some intelligible shnit [more intelligible than mine]) on the ESPN site:

And follow BM's link to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and vote (on the left side) where he should do his college career:
