so I never checked out Lykathea Aflame because I always heard them mentioned alongside metalcore/hardcore bands and just assumed they were along that vein.

But I picked up Elvenefris on a whim and holy shit, what an album. They remind me of what Cryptopsy could have been with a sense of style and composition and had they had apprenticed under Nile for a decade before writing this album. In fact I don't even like making that comparison, but the nontraditional, organic writing style and hellish drumming do draw parallels...

daylight dies used to be in raleigh, we practiced right next to them. would hear/see them pretty often, but they moved out ~2 years ago and I haven't heard anything out of them till now

It may not be everyone's cup of tea stylistically (and the band members themselves are insufferable), but if you can't admit that Liturgy's Aesthetica is a phenomenal metal album, you should go back to sitting at the kid's table.

The first 5 or 6 tracks on that record are amazing. But the second half really really really kills that record. They were amazing live. Don't give a fuck about their stigma for being a pretentious hipster black metal band either. They rule

I'm assuming they're done as a band also, since their drummer left and he basically makes the band not shitty.

And on second thought its actually the first 9 songs save helix whatever. The rest of the tracks are sooooooooooooo bad

You're right about the helix skull interlude thing, and I'll grant you that the a capella chanting track is ridiculous, but the rest of the album is golden.

I guess the shitty thing about playing in sludge bands that aren't fast is that none of the bass translates on video which is kinda the whole aesthetic of the music
