This might not belong, but taking a shot. What's this thread's stance on Kiyosaki's - Rich Dad Poor Dad?

It's been recommended it to me by a few people who's opinions I respect. I fool myself into thinking I'll eventually figure out how to manage my money, but the truth is about 2 years ago now I easily pissed away ~45k in about 10 months. I'm like 70 pages in, but the skeptic in me has stumbled upon a few google searched criticisms. Just curious...

I think Kiyosaki is an idiot. Read his comments on yahoo, he's been exposed as a liar on the premise of the rich dad... he pumps things that have gotten crushed like real estate and then goes back and says he made a shit load...

anyway, bought $5k of Blackrock Latin America on Wednesday. Beta play

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is good if you need someone to cheerlead you into not being a dumbass with your money. Once you're to that point, it offers fairly little in terms of actual instruction. That isn't really the scope of the book.

Also, it's very heavy into making money via income producing properties, which isn't something that is easy to just jump into if you don't already have some money to work with.

Kiyosaki sucks.

Are you talking basic personal finance or are you talking about investing? If you want to read about Investing, I'd suggest reading some of the books out there on Warren Buffet and his investment style. If you're not wanting to be an enormous risk-taker...like me.... and just want slow & steady long term capital appreciation, he's the one to get tips from

i don't pay as much attention to the Dow anymore. i'm more about the S&P. we break out past 1120 and we keep going. if we go a bit lower and then 1080 become ressistance, we've got some trouble.

also, EDC has been $Texas for me this year. i started my relationship with it at $37.89. i kept getting out and back in at higher and higher levels.

Fuck. I looked at EDC when it was at $110 and decided to buy on the next dip.

THERE HAS BEEN NO DIP.

Anyone own or follow Javelin Pharmaceutical(JAV)?

ssjamind, this sounds like something up your alley.

My research so far tells me to buy immediately, if not sooner.

bought YHOO and CCJ because the Najarian brothers on CNBC said so.

bought more EDC -- been buying this one on dips since 37.89 (although i always end up taking gains too early)

...

also just bought a chunk of TYH

^ They had earnings, some officer said something to the effect of "we can't keep up with the demand" I'm guessing in reference to iPHONE sales.

^ X8 We're on 1080 on the S&P currently.

Anyone here trade USO or any derivative of oil?

I transferred a bunch of funds from another account to Scottrade several years ago. I closed out the old account, so how am I supposed to determine the cost basis when I sell these funds?

^^^ your previous accountholder may provide them if you ask but it's not their legal duty to track that sort of stuff the onus falls on the investor. Most of the time a best guess cost basis will suffice but that's a question for a tax advisor really... If they can get you the purchase dates then you can get the original purchase price on your own online easily and then check your tax returns for dividends to compile the cost basis...

I think we are in for a huge correction, i pulled 50% of my total portfolio out of the market today concentrating mostly on my leveraged positions and high beta plays like emerging markets, aapl, etc.

I'm smart enough not to buck the tide and assets do appear overpriced by a longshot. I know they get accused of talking their books but I think its unwise to ignore Jeremy Grantham and Bill Gross's advice.

I wouldn't expect any financial planners to be telling there clients to double down by any stretch, and taking a bit off the table is never a bad thing, you don't lose by taking profits (or clients if your're a planner), ever, in any market. Better to be on the sideline's wishing you were playing than to be playing wishing you were on the sidelines.

That said, the Dow and S&P charts don't look so much like futility as one would think. Look at a 6 month chart, seems like this correction is just in normal wave activity. However, we are at the threshold, another 200 downer or a combination of two or three days netting 300 points down and then it'll be mass exodus I'm guessing. Of course if you have financials and energy, sure feels worse than a mere pullback. AAPL giving back everything pre earnings is also psychologically bad. Seems like people are realizing the numbers to beat for a lot of these companies were on JV level of Madden.

Huge week next week with something major announcing every day next week.

I'm thinking that Monday might be time to slab some cash down on the table, assuming the market doesn't immediately open significantly lower.
