We are failing so bad at tanking now. 13 goals scored, 2 allowed in the last 3 games (this one not over yet, though).

As much as I would like them to tank as well, this is at least showcasing the talent we have that will be traded away soon.

I think Gleason is probably a more vocal leader, but at the same time I think Staal is a more behind the scenes guy. Staal is the sort of guy who can put the team on his back and carry them, and I wholeheartedly believe he should wear the C, although Gleason certainly would be a top choice as well.

Either way Cullen/Whitney have been playing well. Let's see if we can ship them off as rentals and get picks out of them and sign them back in the offseason for veteran leadership on what is sure to be a very young team.

The race for Hall/Seguin/Fowler:

Edmonton 52	16	30	6	38	Lost 12
Toronto 56 17 28 11 45 Lost 6
Carolina 54 19 28 7 45 Won 4
Columbus 56 21 26 9 51 Lost 1
NY Islanders 55 23 24 8 54 Lost 4
Boston 52 23 21 8 54 Lost 6

Multiple games in hand and we play Edmonton on Monday. The dream is dead folks. Might as well enjoy the rest of the season.

oh well, a top 5 pick or so will still be valuable. lucky for us we do have a few young forwards who are very promising.

Good to see that many Caniacs make it out even with the roads still not being too great. The team is playing great right now, but people have to remember that hockey draft is done through a lottery system. Not finishing last doesn't mean we won't get our pick of who we want. I just hope we trade Cullen and/or Whitney as rentals ASAP so that we can still hang onto being 2nd or 3rd worst in the league...............

I think we need to get a Laviolette 20+ win to make the playoffs meter up in here. What would do it in the east? 85? 90?

Quote :
"At the conclusion of the regular season, the 14 NHL teams not qualifying for the playoffs are entered in a weighted lottery to determine the initial draft picks in each round, seeded according to regular season standing. The 30th-place team has a 25% chance of winning the lottery, with odds diminishing to a 0.5% chance for the 17th-place team. A single selection from the lottery pool is made, with the winning team eligible to improve its draft order by up to four places, and no team eligible to drop more than one place. Therefore, only the 26th through 30th place teams are eligible to receive the first draft pick. Consequently, the 30th place team's chance of retaining the first overall pick improves to 48.2%"

We can still get Hall/Seguin/Fowler people.....

Here are the odds of getting a top 3 pick:

30th - 100%
29th - 100%
28th - 70.3%
27th - 10.7%
26th - 8.1%
25th - 6.2%
24th - 4.7%

So sure, a lot of teams CAN, but the point is the higher you climb the slimmer the odds get.

We need to trade Whitney and Cullen as soon as possible to cash in on their recent great play and make sure that we stop screwing up our draft. Making the playoffs right now would require a run likely never seen in professional sports before. Cam is back in top form, Staal is one of the hottest players in the league and we may miss out on a dream draft of picking from one of the top 2 or 3 guys. C'mon Maurice, find a way to do this thing!!!!!

I would think that we are safe to finish in the bottom 3. Barring a collapse of the other teams that are currently vying for a post season bid. This isn't the point in the season teams start relaxing.

This might just be me but considering they've been playing their best hockey all season including one hell of a game against the Hawks, it's really tough to root for the tank right now. I caught some of the Edmonton/Calgary game on Saturday night and Edmonton just looks abysmal at the moment. I don't think we can compete with that level of suck.

Looks like there is very little chance that either Paul Martin or Mike Komisarek will be ready for the Olympics. Tim Gleason will hopefully get the call.

Anyone know if Jussi's chances of making the Finn team now? I heard someone was hurt and now Rutuu has been out for a long while, I'd love to see Jussi make it. He's been tearing it up lately.

John Forslund believes a "minor deal" could be made as soon as today, via several Twitter sources.

Couldn't that mean sending Ray Ray or Cullen somewhere for a minor leaguer? Albeit, hopefully a good one?

i doubt that would be characterized as a "minor deal"

whitney is our main trade chip as we get closer to the deadline, I got to think JR is going to milk the hell out of the Wizard.

sweet imagery.

I, too, think this.

Rumors around that JM Liles is being shopped by the Avs, I know we've been linked with him before. I doubt we're in the mix for him if he is actually being moved, but it's possible. He's a much more likely after season acquisition, no reason to pick up his $$$$ while we tank.
