i'm not sure what you're saying. we now already have two big-men committed for 2013, not including Randle (assuming, of course, the Beejay is committed)

^^if that's the case, I imagine we'll try to pick-up a big-man or two in 2014.

Maybe young recruits view Roy's condition as a cancer to the program?

Maybe that's what he meant, but that's not what he said. He say "I'd still like to see us land a big man next year [2013] if we can't get Randle though." But we've already got two bigs committed next year [2013], even if we don't get Randle.

^^^I shouldn't have to explain the difference between the college basketball landscape today and the 40's. Sure, unc may miss on recruits here or there and have the occasional down year but their recruiting is never going to "drop off".

Yeah I mean obviously they're not suddenly gonna become santa clara or anything but if we're talking dropping down to georgetown or wake level or something

They missed on Troy Williams.
They missed on the Twins.
If they miss on Vonleh to IU, and Meeks to Georgetown...all after Randle dropping them from his list, I would say they have a problem.

You're exactly right, that isn't normal at all. It's an outlier. But, if you guys want to take this one off year as evidence that unc is dropping off and will begin a downward trend in recruiting then be my guest. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

UNC's recruiting has been on a downward spiral ever since Calipari came to Kentucky

they'll probably get Meeks though

Anyway I don't think its inconceivable that Carolina goes from being able to land 3 5 stars every year to landing 1 5-star and some 4-stars every year.

Duke does okay with that because K is a great X&Os coach but I don't think Roy has as much margin for error with recruiting.

From PackInsider, the same folks who swore that Billy Donovan was going to be our next coach:

Quote :
"The other nugget of information we have is on Julius Randle. Randle is arguably 2013's top player. This kis has one and done written all over him. Early on people were dead-sure that he was headed to Kentucky, but that doesn’t seem like such a lock anymore. Then people said UNC or Duke could likely get the nod. Well, both UNC and Duke have been eliminated from his list. So Randle is now publicly down to 6 schools: Kentucky, NC State, Florida, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma.

Remember, back when Purvis was a 2013 recruit (before he reclassified to 2012), he and Randle were very close friends and had made a pact to play together when they got to college. Now again, these kids were 17 years old and teenage pacts should be considered about as solid as water, but it seems that Randle and Purvis still have a good connection and although teams and analysts may overlook that, it’s the main reason NC State is still in the running. In fact, we’re hearing that the two strongest schools in this recruitment are NC State and Texas, and while Randle likely won’t show his hand, we feel as if these are the two schools who have a real shot right now. Randle is from Dallas, Texas so staying home might be enticing, but with Purvis at State and Gottfried getting the Wolfpack back into the national spotlight it might be wise to keep watching this situation very closely. Make no mistake, landing Julius Randle in 2013 is a game changer and will have the Wolfpack right back in the national spotlight."

Because we, as a fan base, are partially characterized by our pessimistic, "the sky is falling" attitude? Just a guess.

^^Yeah. Think IU knew he was going to pick NC State so they dropped him to make it a public thing so that A.) They don't look like they got left at the altar and B.) Looks better to Vonleh that they're "passing on Anya" and all in for him.

Anya wanted to have the big event at his school and pull our hat out and have the anticipation and build up. Now he's lost a lot of that because everyone assumes he's going to NC State. So I think he's trying to open up the recruitment to put some more speculation into it to make it a bigger deal. I feel bad for the kid, and I hate this new practice in college basketball of schools just withdrawing last second offers to "save face"(the Roy Williams special).

Just come announce on campus Anya, you'll get a TON of love from our fan base.

This is a good lesson for recruits wanting the whole enchilada as far as recruiting fame and attention goes. Never cut a list to two. Always keep a third school on the list as insurance even if you have no intention of considering them.

Hopefully Anya doesn't get pissed and make a commitment to some random ass school like Pitt just to spite the prognosticators and increase the drama.

Could mean a number of things but if he is referring to the school he commits to then "shock" would not be the right word for picking State.
