Sitting here listening to a radio stream of the entire Alone 2 album on my one piece headset at work haha. Such terrible quality but it is AWESOME. A lot better than the first one I think. "Don't Worry Baby" cover = 11/18/2008 2:35:28 PM |

Quote : | "Colin Meloy recently spoke to Rolling Stone's Rock & Roll Daily about the sound and concept of the new Decemberists album, Hazards of Love, and guess what? "It's a twisty, fantastical story about a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William, who is desperate for the two of them to be reunited; a forest queen; and a villainous rake," says the report. So it's a Decemberists album, then?
"Everyone's going to call it a rock opera," Meloy said, and that's probably because it pretty much is: Tucker Martine, the album's producer, is sewing together a continuous narrative out of "16 or so" song segments, in the words of Rock & Roll Daily. It sounds like the sewing is necessary too, since Meloy also said, "There's a story there, but it's really painted with broad strokes."
Rock & Roll Daily calls Hazards of Love "the Decemberists' full-on classic-rock move, with Meloy and guitarist Chris Funk's pretty Zep-style fingerpicking punctuated by crushing stoner-metal lurches," though they've been doing stuff like that (minus maybe the "stoner-metal" part) for at least a couple records now. Fulfilling Meloy's proclaimed desire "to have different voices singing different songs, so it would be like a fake musical," Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden guest on the record. What, couldn't get Neil Diamond while you were at it, Meloy?" |
I always figured it was inevitable that The Decemberists make a rock opera, and I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier. Consider me excited.

Highlights for me (in addition to the high quality versions of ^ and Prettiest Girl in the Whole Wide World):
Oh Jonas -> Please Remember -> Come to My Pod. Fantastic transition pieces. Someone mixed the first 7 Black Hole tracks together (Blast Off!, Who You Callin' Bitch?, Oh Jonas, Please Remember, Come to My Pod, Oh No This is Not For Me, and Tired of Sex) and it rocks: http://www.sendspace.com/file/oc29qk
Don't Worry Baby cover is SO good.

Did you even read it? People are walking out because of the kind of lameass jam bullshit that they pulled a number of nights in Asheville and he's calling them names for it.
A guy in a silver dress.
Calling people names.
For not liking sprawling, pointless, noisy prog at a pop band's show.
There's a gigantic disconnect between Billy Corgan '08 and Billy Corgan '00, let alone Billy Corgan '93. 11/20/2008 6:24:06 PM |

And the setlists for these shows are just awful.
But Pitchfork still goes way out of their way to slam people they don't like and slob off people they do like. I'm planning to stop reading for awhile once the Merriweather Post Pavilion circle-jerk reaches a fever pitch. 11/20/2008 7:41:52 PM |

For too many reasons to list, I dont think they will ever even come close to topping "Full Collapse" in my eyes but Ive still picked up all their albums. Havent really gotten into the last 2 that much at all, they just lacked some sense of true emotion like their first 2 have.
Nothing groundbreaking, but I certainly see myself giving this several more listens, and it is a step in the right direction for a band that had a lot of potential and fell flat imo." |

Cloud Cult
She & Him
MGMT (digital release in 07, physical release in 08)

Things I have enjoyed the most this year:
Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun Calexico - Carried to Dust Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts Islands - Arm's Way Okkervil River - The Stand-Ins Rivers Cuomo - Alone II (this doesn't really count though) She & Him - Volume One Tilly & the Wall - O TV on the Radio - Dear Science, Vampire Weekend
None of those are really "album of the year" kind of quality, though. There hasn't been anything this year that has really jumped out to me. 11/23/2008 12:36:39 PM |

A bunch of people from the albumsix.com forums were able to get in and influence the tracklist enough to get Blast Off!, Across the Sea, Devotion, Getting Up and Leaving, Susanne, and Waiting on You played.
Getting Up and Leaving has never been heard before in any fashion (Rivers solo or by Weezer) and is probably the most sought after unreleased track (from The Blue Album era). He did however post some sheet music to his MySpace a couple of years ago, so they brought that to the show to try and get him to play it. The result was elation followed by disappointment as he crushed everyone's hopes when he got to the chorus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TC9x47o_7E
