In a Facebook thread about preparing for the snow and ice someone just mentioned they were worried about losing food in the fridge if their power goes out.

I can't decide what food I need to buy (besides the obvious milk sammich ingredients). Thought about making chili, but that will suck if the power goes out.

I think I'll make wine. Lots of wine.

^^^^My dad gave me that warning last night. I asked him how naive he thought I was. He only responded "I figured you knew, but I still hear stories about people that do that all the time."

In a related story, a friend in Philly overhead a customer at Home Depot get upset when the clerk told him he had to put his new generator outside when it was running.

Apparently we're under flood watch on the coast. Wasn't expecting that one.

^It's a highly convective system. If it was spring/summer, there definitely would be more flood watches, potential for severe storms, etc. Hence why there is a chance of thundersnow.

Not sure if serious.......but either way:

Anyplace that sells camping or outdoor gear. REI, Dicks, Gander Mountain, Walmart
Even some hardware stores carry a few things. The Town & Country near me sells them.

If you're looking for something specifically for this kind of weather event, I'd get the coleman liquid fuel stove instead of the stoves that run on compressed gas. Its a little more work on the set-up, but really not that much, and you can run it on unleaded gas if you run out of the "recommended" fuel.

The Wunderground forecast for 27603 is either really scary or over blown.

3-5" snow today
3-5" snow & ice tonight
1-3" snow & ice tomorrow

I feel like if that actually happens I won't have power for 2-3 days.

Ouch just saw RaleighWx pos the latest NAM gives Raleigh 4" snow and 1.4" freezing rain.

That'd be an all-timer in terms of bad.

Luckily the NAM sucks .

The main precip band (area of high reflectivity on radar) south of Charlotte into Fayetteville is the convective snowband that will eventually pass through the area. Once the low center off the coast gets stronger, that band is gonna tilt back toward the Triad/I-85 corridor and dump A LOT of snow. This is where we will probably see thundersnow, if it occurs.

Another facebook post:

Not quite facepalm worthy since I didn't know either until I checked a few years ago.

So, FYI, if you have gas for heating, it won't operate during a power outage, at least most units won't.
If you're hooked up for gas though, it's a good idea to get gas logs installed and gas cooktops if you meet code. You also probably have a gas water heater, which is likely to run (some newer high efficiency ones require power.) Just look check it for any electrical connections. If they only thing running to it is gas and water, you should be good.
