Fanatik, you are buying 2 ps3's? Wow, what type of job you got?

The problem I have with the 40 gb beyond further cluttering SKU's, dropping USB ports, and removing memory card slot- is the lack of backwards compatability at all! That is bullshit....a cop out.

"The 40GB PlayStation 3 models, devoid of any PS2-related semiconductors, will likely not have any options for backwards compatibility in the future. Speaking to Joystiq, SCEE Director of Corporate Communications Nick Sharples said that there are no plans to offer emulation software as downloadable content at a later date.

"We have no plans to do so at the moment. The sheer numbers of PS2 titles available, together with the increased complexity of using a software only solution for each and every title means that to ensure accurate software emulation for the majority would be technically challenging, time consuming and costly," he said. "

i think he's importing the new dualshock, not a whole other ps3

i was thinking about doing that until i realized i don't particularly care about rumble

maybe if i can find a cheap one on ebay i'll grab it

It sucks, but you can't expect Sony to release a $400 PS3 with all the same features as a $600 PS3. A smaller hard drive is more or less negligible to the value of the package since it's easily upgradeable. Hopefully they keep selling a higher priced bundle that keeps PS2 BC intact for people who want that.

yea, def. only importing a controller. I was kind of on the fence, whether to wait til spring or import... but the white seals the deal. I really like it even though it's kinda fugly.

I wish FIFA was in stores today... Why is it that the video game world can't get their shit together with release dates? Music + movie industries have no problem having their new releases on shelves ON THE RELEASE DATE (what a concept). I mean, what's the point of saying FIFA comes out on the 9th if no one can get it til the 10th. /rant

I know that, but stripping BC was not one of the ways to get that done....I expected them to have their software emulation at a more mature level like they promised at E3 and so voraciously touted for so long as BC being a big aspect to the system. I know they are in cost cutting mode, but meh...that was important.

Doesn't matter to me, cause I have the 60 gig, and likely doesn't matter to anyone in the thread thank goodness.

From what I've read, it's actual more of a technical problem than anything else. I mean, 100% software emulation of the PS2 does exist, and there is even one emulator that actually works with some commercial games (http://www.pcsx2.net/). However, none of them can run games at full speed.

The problem is apparently the 48 Gbyte/sec eDRAM that is part of the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer. The PCSX2 guys theorized that you would need a 5GHZ machine and a gig of ram for their emulator to run at full speed. Obviously, the Cell in the PS3 is no where near that powerful. It may actually be impossible for the PS3 to ever run PS2 games at full speed without keeping that eDRAM on board.

Still, I do agree that they should have figured out a way to cut costs while keeping the PS2 hardware on board.

^ I think they are trying to figure out a way to do way too many things right now, so this probably wasn't a big priority. I think as more and more good games come out for the PS3, more consumers are going to want the PS3 to play PS3 games. Don't think BC is that big of a deal.

Glad I have it though because there are a couple games I may want to get eventually.

Well........I think it's a bigger deal than you, yes.

This isn't a great time to alienate PS2 owners especially those in European countries that can't turn to anything else. PS1 and 2 are AMAZING platforms and for 2 generations now they've had more titles and one of the most impressive libraries ever assembled. The fact that the PS2 still receives support shows that, and it is cool during this dlump of PS3 games to turn to the impressive library of the PS brand. Ive enjoyed playing PS2 titles slightly upscaled, wireless & with unlimited memory cards. Even when i got my PS3 part of what was exciting and still is exciting was buying into the playstation brand, with full compatability.

Hell, I remember the press conferences where they lambasted Microsoft for not having 100% BC and Sony promised they would ... and laughed at Microsoft for having multiple skus, and promising they wouldn't. Now look where we are. Everyone made a stink about it for a long time, but MS kept working on the backwards compatibility adding games here and there about 3-4 times a year (last update was July 2007). Why shouldn't we expect Sony to at least somewhat stick to their values, and what they've trumpeted?

So now when the PS3 has given up on backwards compatibility in at least one of their future systems from this point forward, it is a pretty big deal.....

I've been playing Devil May Cry 3 lately. The videos of DMC4 got me interested, so thought I'd check it out. Insanely hard game.

^^^I pretty much agree with all that, however, they did say they'll continue supporting BC in future firmware updates for the PS2 silicone equipped PS3s, so they aren't dropping it completely. People wanted a cheap PS3, this is what they got. If they want PS2 BC, they have to pay more.

Also, people have analyzing the 40GB PS3 and found it has less air vents and is quieter to boot. The power supply also consumes about 100w less. Sony may have switched to 65nm chips for the Cell, GPU, or both. There also a bunch of pretty minor differences that they've done to cut costs. A lot of the logos and emblems are now just painted on, instead of being etched. The little swiveling PS emblem above the drive slot is also just painted on now.

You know, people are going to bitch about everything I guess. They had their balls in a vice to lower the price, and they found this as a way to allow them to cut the price this low. They still have 2 SKUs, so if you want backwards compatibility, you pay the extra bones. What if they left it in and the price only dropped $50? You'd probably be bitching that its not enough.

The thing is expensive as hell to make, and for $400 it just flat out can't have everything. They are already losing so much on each sale, so to me it makes sense. Maybe BC means a lot to you, but I don't think that it will be very significant as far as sales goes.

Ouch. Bad PS3 press lately...I think need to start releasing technical white papers or something, they better cork this stuff up before this gets into NeoGeo or 3DO land.

Valve's Gabe Newell has been pretty open about his displeasure with the PS3 in the past, and it's clear from a recent interview that time has not softened him, calling the system "a waste of everyone's time" in Edge magazine last week. Newell continued, saying, "Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created. I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution.

Monster Hunter 3 (which is huge in Japan...I've never played it) is being cut from PS3 and moving to the Wii because of the architecture. "Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title,"

I can't really hate Gabe Newell since his company has made the best game ever, twice. However, you have to look at this from his perspective. Valve doesn't develop console games. They develop PC games and want them ported to consoles as quickly and easily as possible in order to cash in on the user base. In that regard, yeah, the PS3 is a waste of time because it's a pretty exotic architecture and porting PC code over to it isn't an easy job. It also has a comparatively small user base, so they may never see a return on the time invested into making the port. So yeah, I see where he's coming from, but it doesn't really have any bearing on the future of PS3 game development.

I'll agree that game companies nowadays want something quick and easy due to financial restrictions. I would almost say the 'ingenuity' factor or pure 'hard work' coding has been lost to sure bets, sequels, repeats, overdone franchises....all for financial hedges.

Thats' why a part of me wants to be like, dude - man the fuck up, arent you a coder? GO FUCKING CODE. Stop making excuses. The other part wonders if it's just too complicated for it's worth at this point. Dunno.

Rumor that there will be a Warhawk Expansion due in December:

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/49470

Quote :
"Internet rumblings say the expansion is slated for a December release and will include a new vehicle, the dropship, which can airlift vehicles across the map and assault opposing foes with its missile launchers. No pricing information is attached to the bruits, nor is there any indication of new maps or other additions, which could possibly include new weapons and new parts for players to customize their virtual avatars."

Sounds sweet. Hope there will be some new maps. I'm still playing this game just about everytime I turn on the PS3. So much fun.

Anyone here getting eye of judgement? For some strange reason I'm interested in it...not b/c ive got like magic: the gathering background or anything like that, but the idea of playing cards on a table top sounds kinda organic and neat. Seems like fun if it can be played with like 4 people....

admittedly i dont know enough about it, but curious what people think. I like the fact that for whatever price is it 60? 70? you get all the stuff you need to play including the camera.

So the 40GB PS3 w/o PS2 BC and Spider-Man 3 pack-in is confirmed for November 2, and $399.99. I also think they stripped SACD support from it too, kinda odd considering Sony owns that license, but whatever. Also, the full featured 80GB PS3 w/Motorstorm will drop down to $499.99.

I sold Warhawk...never played it enough. It was decent but too much other stuff going on by far.

But this new video of Uncharted environments, if you watch it the graphics it's very, very impressive with the amount of geometry on screen. I admit to my hype meter leveling up a couple of notches to 'must buy' or 'likely buy unless they fuck something up major'

This might be a week or two old but I just got back into town. I got an e-mail saying I needed to review the latest PSN terms of use "yadda yadda" before I could get back on the PSN. I go to the link, which says to click to "accept" button and all will be dandy, but I can't find the "accept" button anywhere on the page. Am I crazy or did anyone else have the same problem?

I just got a new playstation3 in from the Sony repair place, after I sent mine to them because it turned into a paper weight (overheating?). The whole process took about two weeks. But this new Playstation has similiar issues, (it freezes constantly, especially during Warhawk, but also when Im just watching a fuckin movie. Its kinda of worse than my old one, and Ive only been playing it for about a day!!!
Im about fed up with this machine, and I am kind of looking for a way out. I still have the original box and stuff, any one think walmart, kmart, or Target would take it back without a receit? All I would want is store credit.

Its the 60 GB model.

probably not, but i guess you can try

also, if two different boxes are having the same issues, maybe it's something you're doing wrong

you don't have it in a confined area where it can overheat, do you?

It is in a nice, cool, open space on top of the entertainment center. Also, the issues with the new box were immediate, freezing occurred within 15 minutes of playing. While watching movies, these white bars will come up on the screen, and if you press a button on the controller, it freezes.

This has been one of the worst purchases of my life. It is litterally a 600 dollar paperweight.

If I can get store credit, I think a 360 elite would be what'd id spend it on...

So instead of contacting Sony and asking them what the hell is going on, you're going to screw some other establishment by giving them a broken piece of hardware? Geez man, shitty that you have been inconvenienced and that the thing isn't working, but don't go fuck someone else over for your own convenience.

Right now I am wondering what the odds are of you getting 2 broken PS3s as this has been a rock solid box with very few complaints. Sorry to hear it man, but I think you should take the legit road on this one.

^ Of course that's not to say that its perfect, I'm sure there are some issues.

Why don't you go to the store and buy one and see how it works out just to make sure it is actually the ones being sent to you. You should definitely be on the horn with Sony though stressing your dissatisfaction. Ask for a manager and say it happened twice. You might even score a freebie. Tell the dude you just want you're money back and you are tired of the inconvenience.

you said you're shit's not working and it was suggested that you buy a new one, put you're broken one in the box, and return it and say it doesn't work. Sounds pretty weak to me.

Course, the store is probably going to be getting reimbursed by Sony so probably not that big of a deal. Whatever.
