ideally, we should leave him in the minor for couple years to develop his game, but our farm system is barren of prospects, so he'll probably be playing in the major either this year or next year.

Erm, they do that with their sticks. Plus, anything that the defending team does to the puck in their own end is legal. Batting/kicking/high sticking it into your own net is allowed.

As far as the rule being rewritten, there's already a provision for deflections with an angled foot that are part of a hockey play (hockey stop, rotation), but not for bringing your foot into a deflection. Bringing your foot into a deflection should be allowed, but a puck that has lost its momentum toward the slot, or, for the sake of using what's in the rulebook, the goaltender's privileged area (NOT the crease), should not be allowed to be powered in solely by the use of a powered kick.

However, because that's really fucking complicated, I'm down with the current "distinct kicking motion" being illegal.

You've got to get it at least a foot off the ice to bounce it in off a surface that's actually open to the rear...it's pretty much impossible with a puck and a skate blade. Once again, a kick and a deflection off a skate are two very different things.
