Your spraying carb cleaner into the intake of a running engine?

Don't waste your time with seafoam or anything else. Just take the carb off and clean the damn thing. It's an easy job if you just take only one apart at a time and pay meticulous attention to where things go and how the fit. Half an hour of scrubbing along with some compressed air through jets and choke passages and you'll running like new. Don't half ass it.

^and that won't work. Read up on the basics of a motorcycle carb (I assume yours is simple CV). Spraying carb cleaner into the intake bypasses the jets, valves, needles, seats, bowls, and all choke passages(all the things that are responsible for your poorly running bike). Basically, you're just hosing down your combustion chamber with something flammable (which might have temporarily improved your lean issue, just as ether or starting fluid would), not cleaning the carb at all.

I totally agree. I will do it for a fraction of catzor's fee, but I won't include the reacharound.

thanks guys....i'm thinking the same thing. might as well just do it right the first time. researching it now.

If you haven't torn them down yet, you're welcome to come over and work on them at my place one evening if you need the stuff to do it. I've got all the tools and most of the semi-deadly caustic cleaners necessary. Get a hold of an O-ring kit for them if you haven't already too.

In case anyone is interested, I am hosting a maintenance day this Saturday at my house. I started the official invite for folks on SVRider, but if you guys have not-SV bikes you want to bring, the more the merrier. I just can't guarantee that I know how to do stuff on your machine, so it's up to you to bring a service manual. I've got tools and equipment to work on just about anything but tires.

If there is any interest in coming over and working or just hanging out and riding, let me know.

That sounds baller. I wish I was in town for it. I could use a good excuse to do the fork seals on my EX500. They've leaked since I got the damn thing a year and a half ago.

^^^ can i bring my shit to safety wire? I wouldn't mind swapping the quick shifter from my street bike to my track bike and finding the pin leak in my cooling system as well.

^^ I have a dual vac guage, but no tach. You may be able to rent one from an auto parts place.

^ I don't know anything about safety wiring, but you're more than welcome to come on out and go for it. I can definitely give you a hand with the other stuff.

Those Daytonas were pretty sweet. although i recall them having some common clutch issues. Definitely a good way to spend 2500 dollar bucks though.

On a realted note, did abot 6 hours of super scenic cruising through Shenandoah valley this past weekend. Weather has finally warmed up here.

Myrtle bike weeks are coming up, anyone going?

hey man thanks for the invitation and i would totally come over this Saturday except I'm going to be out of town. I think I can handle this on my own. I've got the Honda Shop manual which shows step by step removal and breakdown and I've also watched a few vids on youtube. it doesn't seem too hard...just got to be careful, document the tear down so yo know how it goes back together and keep up with the parts.

The thing I would strongly recommend is for you to do some googling and find a basic faq on how motorcycle CV carbs work. If you have that fundamental understanding, not only is it easier to put shit back together, but you will also have a better idea of what/where/why shit needs to be cleaned in order to function.

Something I found helpful when doing a carb rebuild is to get some of the foam egg crates and use those to put the small parts in. It lets you keep groups of parts together, and you can more easily remember the order that things go off and back on.

I use small disposable Tupperware containers to soak them in carb cleaner and avoid scattering the pieces if I knock it around.

well, fucked up my tailbone pretty bad yesterday. kind of epitomizes how shitty street riding is to me and cemented my plan to sell my street bikes and focus on the track. anyone wanna buy a really nice blaze pearl orange 636 for 3500? low miles and everything is perfect besides some scratches on the right-side lower.

front end got loose on wade going through some muddy looking stuff and I saved it... 2 feet short of the new cement median. separated but my tailbone hit square on the edge of the median

I got a good 4 hours in today and got to smoke a few kids on rockets. Its funny when they turn off on the first street when coming up to a red light!

haha, I was riding home from raleigh on 70E the other night, and passed this bitchass kid on a rocket. He immediately downshifts a couple of times pulls a classic ricer flyby on me, then slows back down. I'm like "Wow, I am motherfucking impressed with how you smoked my 30 year old, air-cooled BMW touring bike with your race-replica. This kid needs a sponsorship!"

Well, not a half-mile later, we both turn onto an onramp (a nice sharp one with at least 180 degrees of heading change)...he brakes and slows waaaay down, then rounds the onramp at a relative crawl. Starting a good hundred yards behind him, I rolled the old BMW in at a decent clip and went around it at little, if any, faster than my normal pace, and totally ate him up, passing him again just after we merged into the new road (as I was already carrying a lot more speed than him). That time, he just stayed put behind me, hanging his head and holding my pocket.

mMy bike dont take corners very well.. But when kids pull up and are all up on there rockets reving there bikes. Well this 95 CI motor in my Harley walks them! Stop light to stop light. Only Harley I have been on that will flip over in the first two gears(If it hooks up). The big bore I did this winter was well worth it!

Cool videosmoothcrim, looks like a ton of fun. Not sure if this was just a track day or a race but you got eaten up on some straights I keep thinking about doing the racing class at nearby Summit Point to get some track experience if nothing else, but dont know if i want to take out my minty fresh Buell out there, maybe I can convince my cousin to let me ride his, he got the one with the clipons anyhow. Or i could try to bring the ole Hawk back to life. Are track event crashes covered by collision insurance? I imagine that somewhere in the fine print they are excluded.

One time I passed Ragged on an on-ramp on my 600rr. I was going 140 he was going about 80 on his r1. Lol I came so close to him too. Scared the shit outta both of us.

^^ yeah, im on an 03 636 and was gettin walked by a lot of liter bikes in the straights. the gopro lens makes things look farther away but there were a lot of passes I could have made if I was in the advanced group (inside on turns) but people that broke the passing rules were sent home. my bike has the brakes from an 07 zx10 and a brembo master cyl. you see me late brake a few guys out there. it was fun reeling them in, just a lot harder to make a pass stick with such long straights

I have a hard time buying that even a heavily modded HD would do anything to a GSX-R 1000 besides get brutally raped by it.

Me too. Given the weight difference, I feel like you'd literally needed to make double the stock torque...and then maybe bump the rev limit up 4 or 5 k.

Forgot to answer question...I sold the SV a couple of months ago. Just have the BMW now. If I buy another sportbike, it'll be a full-up rocket with no concessions to comfort or practicality.

Well it has a 95 ci motor, cams, and crank, hardtail frame and only weighs about 400 pounds. We were on a straight road so I am assuming he had it open...

I guess 400 lbs is possible with a pretty minimalist hardtail chopper...have you actually weighed it?

At any rate, even the earliest GSX-R 1000s make 150 rwhp or so (or is it even more that?). There is no way in hell that a 95ci HD engine makes that much power. I suppose that if it's legitimately ~400 lbs (which, I would think, would be extraordinarily light even for a hardtail chopper) , makes 100-110 rwhp (which, I would think, would be a gorilla strong HD engine), and is geared for 110 mph instead of 180 mph...

then maybe it would have a decent chance against a liter-class sportbike over stoplight-to-stoplight distances and speeds (i.e., when the race is over by the time the GSX-R rider has let the clutch lever all the way out).

* Not trying to be a dick...just heard more than one HD rider talk about outrunning rockets over the years, and I just don't buy it. I've ridden a whoooole bunch of bikes over the years, and a liter-class sportbike is beastly on a mind-warping level.

I have not put it on a scale but it is right around 400. It makes about 110hp. Anything over about 85 to 90mph any 1000 will go by me.. but not even kidding getting to there is insane! Most of the time in 1st and 2nd it will just bust the tire loose(scary as hell being a hardtail) But It is pretty damn quick!

that would be a similar power:weight ratio to a 600cc sportbike, although probably with shorter gearing.

the hardtail is part of why it breaks traction. Suspension (a) keeps the tire in better contact with the road, and (b) allows for more rearward weight transfer (and therefore, traction)

Yeah she will spin the hell out of the tire! I know it will walk a 600 cbr rr as my co worker has one and he has never even came close to keeping up in about 8th mile or so. And the gsxr 1000 was a bit behind me. He was a young kid so who knows he might have not been getting on it but it was a straight road so I am thinking he was.?. I do know the motor work I did over the winter was a nasty change. Even got a springer seat with a naked girl from my GF for my birthday haha.
