Finishing up grad school (which was a way to "advance" myself while unemployed). It's pretty sad that I started looking for grad schools around the time this thread was created, with the hopes that the economy would have made a recovery by now. Now I'm back looking for work, with the same few opportunities, but with a mountain of debt piling up. Woo-hoo! 1/4/2011 12:26:35 PM |

adultswim All American 739 Posts user info edit post Well, I'm moving whether I find something or not. I'll get a part time job if I have to. I'm just wondering how much weight employers put on current location. I feel like a lot of my applications have been ignored because I don't live in the area.
I've got a friend that I can room with starting in January, 15 min from uptown Charlotte.

I'm kinda in the same boat, I start the MAC program at UNCC in May and I'm looking for something full time (evening classes) but I feel like I'm being ignored w/ a fuquay varina address. 1/17/2011 10:44:01 AM |

Finally, just got hired. Working at Churchill Downs in Sales and Fullfillment for the 2011 Kentucky Derby. It's only a temp position at the moment, but a large portion of their permanent employees get hired full time from temp positions. Also have an interview for a sales job in Chicago on thursday...when it rains it pours I guess. I know it sounds disingenuous, but for all the unemployed wolfwebbers, just keep your heads up. I thought I'd never find work and was getting super discouraged, it'll happen. 1/18/2011 1:11:09 PM |

I had an interview on Friday with this construction company. They are building a production facility for Talecris in Clayton. I feel really good about it. It's only a 1 year contract but I'm hoping to make some contacts and possibly get hired over at Talecris. I should hear something back today. 1/24/2011 9:39:29 AM |

^heh, the company I worked for just did the engineering design for that new Talecris facility
Who is doing the construction? I can't remember whether we are doing it or if that was a separate contract (I wasn't on that specific project).

I had an interview at Catalent on Thursday. I was suppose to meet with 3 managers but the main manager was out due to a family matter. I met with the other 2 managers. It went good. They said that they would set me up with a phone interview with the manager when she gets back to the office. I have yet to hear anything back from other interview with Fluor. I've been in constant contact with the recruiter and she hasn't heard anything either. 2/5/2011 8:45:06 AM |

i have a feeling i will be out of the construction business in the next 6-8 months . The industry is just terribly off right now and our branch is so small that I may be the first one out.
I enjoy this job, i'm wondering if i'd be able to negotiate some kind of sabbatical or period of time off without pay? I'm not hurting for cash flow and could delve into savings for a short period of time if could help the company and also potentially allow me to come back if/when things turn around? 2/9/2011 9:30:08 AM |

Wouldn't that be a pretty risky move? 2/9/2011 10:08:38 AM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
it would be, but at this point in my life i have very minimal debt or dependencies so if i take a small risk for a short period of time with a chance to come back and maintain my salary and benefits i feel like it would be worth the chance. i mean I could always try and find something part time in the meantime. i dunno....i never thought i'd have to worry about this working here. 2/9/2011 11:54:24 AM |

Good Luck to you Jeep and Max..
It has been a roller coaster for the past couple of weeks. I still have not heard anything from my interview at Fluor. That was about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I've tried to get in touch with the recruiter but she is hardly there. She won't respond to my voicemails or emails. I have no idea if the job is filled, on hold or what.
As for my other interview from last week, it doesn't look good. I was set to interview with 3 managers (2 QA managers and the hiring manager). The hiring manager was out of the office due to a family matter on the day of my interview. I only interviewed with the 2 QA managers. Both had said that a phone interview may be set up with the hiring manager when she returns to the office. I contacted the HR Coordinator on Monday who scheduled my interview about a possible phone interview with the hiring manager. I didn't get a response. I contacted the recruiter on Tuesday who first called me about the job. I got a response from him yesterday. He stated that they are moving forward with other candidates at this time. I would not be getting a phone interview with the hiring manager. If anything changes, he or another staff member would contact me. I thanked him for the response and asked him to keep me in mind for similar opportunities in the future. So, the door is partially open on that one. 2/10/2011 2:16:46 PM |

Finally landed an interview tomorrow, but it's only a CAD position and there is no chance for development toward becoming a professional engineer. What do I say if they ask me about my plans for the future? I will be looking for an engineering position at some point. 2/10/2011 4:19:29 PM |

I'm not really unemployed - more like under-employed because I've been contracting for two years.
I have had a phone interview and the company is flying me down for an on-site in the next few weeks. The Director I phone interviewed with said this is just a formality to see if the team thinks I'll fit in. We'll see how it goes. I've got my fingers crossed because I'm tired of being broke, and I'm tired of this area. 2/20/2011 6:45:34 PM |
