In other news, I have two older friends turning 40 within the next week, and to celebrate, one is having a beer tasting opening up his cellar with lots of Surly & Town Hall, 4 Calling Birds, etc. And the other is having his at the Cigar Room at Fallingrock Tap House (one of the best beer bars in the U.S.) I'm super excited!
Taking a couple from my cellar tonight: Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale 2010 Deschutes The Abyss

Bought a bottle of this the other night. I probably shouldn't have at the price, but I felt compelled. Anyone had it?

No, but I have a bottle in my cellar, probably going to keep it until my birthday in March. Old Rasputin is rated 100 by itself. Add barrel-aging and it's gotta be like 110 out of 100! lol. 1/13/2012 11:32:31 AM |

how long are you there? steer clear of LAB unless they have some dark beers on tap. If you can swing by the Lobster Trap restaurant right when they open it's worth it. It's the home of OysterHouse Brewing and the Moonstone Oyster Stout. so delicious. 1/13/2012 2:06:13 PM |

Sierra Rye IPA -- not too bitter and not a huge hoppy taste but I like it.. 1/14/2012 1:46:09 PM |

Damn I was very close to buying a sizer of the Sierra rye but I'm not really in the mood for an ipa, so I went with the Pipeline Porter, yummmmmm
I've fallen out of love with IPAs this winter, I'm all about some malty beers - amber/brown ales, porters, stouts 1/14/2012 2:00:49 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
I don't drink too many IPAs at all anymore. just like hop fade, i got 'interest fade' after the big XIPA, DIPA boom a couple years ago. But i enjoyed a few double RyePAs last night and FS Charlotte has Hopslam on tap today which i might go get a few.
but i'm a dark beer whore through and through now. 1/14/2012 2:26:34 PM |

^x alot...that Sierra Rye IPA was not my cup of tea. it just failed to deliver on multiple levels IMO. 6/10, maybe because i was pretty drunk and talked my even drunker friend into opening it at 3am.
is there a standard rating system in this thread? are we on a 5-star or x/10? 1/15/2012 5:31:03 PM |

love that Highland Porter.
went to Roth a few weeks ago and tried their mint chocolate stout (they made 2 kegs), which was awesome. much, much better than their regular dark construct stout. very subtle amount of menthol that most people probably wouldn't notice unless they were told.
also was fortunate enough to stumble into Big Boss when they had a keg of their bourbon aged bad penny, which was good as well. 1/16/2012 9:45:09 AM |

Had the slam of hops at Raleigh Times last night. I must admit, I was pretty sad when the keg died. Got quite a buzz off half the glass with was 10oz. Almost got my hands on some Southern Tier Mokah but they ran out of that too. 1/17/2012 10:39:32 AM |

^^It's good, but not really what I was expecting, probably deserved an 8 and the Grand Cru a 9, but I have a sweet tooth and enjoy the malty, caramel, toffee flavors much more than the black bitter malts, and magnum hops in a stout are not my cup of tea, but Mephistopheles' Stout is a highly rated beer, so don't just take my word for it.
And I was tasting those beers with 6 other friends, yes, I did get drunk, but not that bad, I still was able to bike home after, luckily I only live like 1 mile from my friends place.
It was pretty fun, at some point though I wish it was a smaller number of guys and a smaller number of beers as your palette gets pretty shot after 10 beers, even going light-to-dark, barleywines are hard to compare side-by-side tasting, it was reminiscent of GABF for sure though, lol.

had the Red Oak "Black Oak" last night. They call it a dopplebock. I liked it much better than their standard Red Oak, which is too biscuity/toasty for me.

he got an email from a 'local' store that I haven't been too yet- supposed to be pretty awesome and apparently they got a lot more of it than they had hoped for, so they didn't mind letting a case go (with what they were expecting, they were only gonna sell 1 4 pack at a time). Becoming a fan of 21st Amendment's beers. Love the packaging. Thought their Black IPA was really good and enjoying the Bitter American at 4.4% alcohol.
And is it just me or have some of the Founders' beers been much easier to get ahold of this year (excluding CBS and KBS)? I've seen several cases of their Russian Imperial Stout on multiple visits to Sam's. They also seem to have had a steady supply of Breakfast Stout for months.
