It always seemed like it was a long shot to get Randle. Kentucky/Calipari just has a better track record with winning (prior to this year) and getting guys to the NBA. We could have really used a big year from a standpoint of building our program in the eyes of future recruits. Unless Brown and Leslie return, we're going to be middle of the pack in the ACC next year. We need Purvis and Warren to stick around at least 2 more years and have another solid recruiting class next year to really move up and compete in what's going to be a pretty sick basketball league by the time Louisville joins.

i figured that Randle would go to Texas and was hoping for Wiggens to Kentucky. When i read Randle to UK, my biggest fear was that it would force Wiggens to choose UNC.

Someone like wiggins shouldn't be worried about playing time. The guys who committed early are probably more worried about wiggins committing and them sitting on the bench.

I always thought he was washed up anyways.

We didnt really want him in the first place.

We probably retracted our offer and he "took us off" his list so he could save face.

you can't play collegiate and minor league baseball simultaneously

not that that matters here though. who else are we still in on?

the baseball rule is dumb anyway, they should just make everyone sit out three years like football. better for nba, better for college, better for team usa, just better for basketball all around.

and i think you're thinking of hockey? i think they can do that in hockey? maybe?

I agree with everything that you just said, but it's not better for the players that could be making millions in the NBA.

The current rule only benefits the NBA, since they don't have to evaluate high school talent. Eliminating the one year removed from HS rule gives elite athletes the freedom to pursue a career (Lebron didn't need HS) and keeps athletes with ZERO interest in college from funneling through for a year, with no real concern about academic progress. The baseball rule let's players go pro from HS, but if you enroll in college you need to spend more than a year there... Either rule is preferable to what is in place today, which is an NBA rule that only benefits the NBA, who loves the free marketing from NCAA basketball (which fills the need for a minor/developmental league without the NBA needing to make a real investment in it).

okay, well the nba doesn't give me money for no reason either.

^ it benefits the nba more than letting kids come straight out of high school, but everything you said would be even more amplified w/ a 3 year rule (or a 2 or 4 year rule, obviously). that's why it's so baffling to me. and i've never understood the lebron argument. adrian peterson could've played in the NFL out of high school but no one complained that he had to go to college. in the long run for the nba it's worth it, and by a lot, to let lebron play 4 years in college and miss out on all of the sebastian telfairs of the world.

So they have about 8 scholarship players returning, and 7 signed for next year.. That can't look good to have to cut players.

On top of that, losing and having a bad season, pushing guys to the nba when they weren't ready (they got paid, but doesn't that hurt future picks if none of them turn out to be that good)..

I mean that doesn't matter as much as a championship and getting $$ but.. Whatever, fuck kentucky

it happens more often than you think

crean cut a couple guys this year. or at least pulled the TOB "youve been on scholarship 4 years, gtfo" deal when a guy had eligibility left

Torian Graham is only halfway done with JC. It's a 2 year program.

No idea about Uchebo.

^^^^ do they actually get released from scholarships? I know UConn "highly advised" players to transfer but they never out and out pulled scholarships. If the case is they are pulled how does that affect eligibility at another school? Same year out?

I thought all scholarships were only a year long... which is why Scumbag Cal could come into Kentucky and clean house to make room for his new recruits. Pretty sure he did this his first year there.
I think 99% of coaches honor the scholarship for four years, if needed, but they aren't required to. I may be wrong though

Ugh yeah he did. You can debate whether its morally ok but it's kind of fact that he did.

Quote :
"Kentucky coach John Calipari is doing something I normally would hate. He has recruited well beyond the NCAA maximum of 13 scholarship players allowed for a single season, and by doing so he is having to cut loose a handful of players. Just yesterday, three UK players were "allowed" to transfer, or graduate early, or whatever lingo you want to call it. Kentucky is still one player over the limit, and if Jodie Meeks drops out of the NBA draft -- and I expect he will -- the Wildcats will have to shed two more players."

Since this is now the Kentucky Basketball Recruiting thread, how is it that Kentucky is staying about the Graduation Success Rate or w/e necessary to maintain a program by NCAA rules?

There is no graduation success rate. What you're referring to is the academic progress rate. Schools don't get punished for players leaving early or transferring as long as they are in good academic standing when they leave.

This is nothing new. It isn't as common in basketball, but in football, it is almost a standard practice to give out more scholarships that they have, & cut scholarships later.

Has anyone ever heard of greyshirting?

i stand corrected. however, to contribute some unnecessary information that is more of a rationalization than a refutation, one of the players who left, AJ Stewart, had quit the team during the Gillespie reign due to lack of playing time and barely got back on the squad, another was Jared Carter who had already gone through Senior Day, but was considering petitioning the NCAA for a 5th year because he got hurt for part of one of his seasons (depriving the team of his 1 ppg)...

fuck it. i root for (one of) the most successful basketball program in NCAA history. and to be so successful the program has periodically done some scummy things over the last seven decades. it'd be more troubling to me, though, if i was delusional enough to think there's an ounce of honor in big time collegiate athletics, or that my irrational interest in the team was the product of anything other than social conditioning.

I taught at his school. Didn't have him in my class, but he was in a some of the after school clubs I ran. Really good kid. Matured a ton the past few years. It will be weird not being able to despise a UNC player for once.

Of course, I still hope his team goes winless.

It'd be nice to have someone who is a little bit older that can hit a decent percentage from 3. Plus with CJ and Zo likely leaving as well its not like we're hurting for scholarships.

Yeah that's true, I'm sure we're going after more but another big seems more important, but I guess more players never hurt. It would be weird to actually be able to sub out 5 guys for 5 others that can actually play

I do think we'll probably be running 3 guards quite often.

^and i thought about this when Roy would sub all five guys at once. We couldn't even do that without sending in Vandenburg and two walk-ons.

uhm, basically.

as has been said, when you have this many scholarships you might as well throw one or two to some jucos.

Uchebo is in his 2nd year, and is listed amoung the top 30 or so JUCOs available.

I haven't heard good news about us being involved with a JUCO big, but you have to assume that the coaches are looking at every avenue available to pull in some quality big man talent right now.
