I don't see that at all, except for the fact they're both black and can jump. Fells had a really pretty shot and great ups but couldn't do anything else -- couldn't dribble, couldn't really pass, couldn't penetrate.
Lee doesn't have a pretty shot (really low release) but it seems to work. The thing that separates him from Fells is that he's really quick, has great handles, and seems to play some reckless abandon (in a good way). Fells was always more of a smooth athlete -- Lee is an explosive one.
After watching those videos, I really hope we get this guy.3/30/2013 1:19:59 AM |

We'll probably play a 3-guard lineup next year, so I'd say we absolutely need 5 guards. Turner is more a traditional "3" anyway.3/30/2013 1:21:17 AM |

We need bodies. Period. Guards, centers, chuckers, who cares you can make a lineup work. I don't want him throwing scholarships at worthless players or people who will transfer out but functional players that want to be here are needed and can't be overly picky. I think we have gotten so use to 6 and 7 man rotations here that we overreact way to much to have "2 guys that play the same spot!" 3/30/2013 11:24:31 AM |

I wouldn't be reactive and go after many 4 year scholarship recruits this year. Most of the quality guys are locked up. Going after what's left is how you end up with a team full of Vandenburgs. Instead, sign as many post-grads and JUCOs as we can. Then focus on recruiting solid 3-4 year players who will help build the program. I think we should avoid the 1 and done type until we have the foundation to succeed with them.
Think about the recent "savior" 5 star guys. Hickson was good but didn't blend with the team and we didn't succeed with him. Leslie didn't make the team better as a freshman. Harrow bolted. Purvis bolted. All these guys get hyped up so much, and they struggle to live up to it, especially if we don't have the complementary players to help take the pressure off them. 4/1/2013 5:45:49 PM |

I dunno about not throwing out some panic offers, having Savon Goodman on the roster for next season would be pretty nice. To be honest, we have room for a guy like that, a JUCO, a grad transfer and more... 4/1/2013 5:58:39 PM |

we don't really need a project though. if he's worth a 4 yr commitment, sign him up, but don't sign a project when what we need is a solid warm body for next year. 4/1/2013 6:15:40 PM |

I'm not saying we should throw scholarships at guys like TDT and Vandenberg. But we've got plenty of scholarships to spare at this point, and there'd be nothing wrong with taking a chance on someone right now. 4/1/2013 6:32:55 PM |

I really hope we can get Desmond Lee and Sidy Djitte now. I just never pictured Purvis being the kind to transfer, particularly since he'd be a playing 35 minutes a night and would be a bigger focus for the offense. One good season and he could have been off to the NBA. Now he's an additional year from the league, and his family won't be able to see his games as easily. 4/1/2013 9:49:44 PM |

Purvis is not an NBA prospect at this point, so staying at State may have killed his chances completely.
He probably believes there is a coach/opportunity out there who could mold him into an NBA player.

now he won't get a shot at the NBA for at least another two years.

That's what I don't get. Absolutely nothing about this move makes sense from any point of view. He would've been one of the top offensive options on the team next season, played 35+ minutes and been close to home. It could end up being a plus if he didn't grow any from this year to next simply because of how out of control he got at times, his issues in the half-court and his poor FT shooting, but if he can work on simply getting a better feel for the game then there's no question he could really dominate opposing guards. Has to be someone in his camp not liking the type of minutes he got down the stretch.
I mean hell, look at Tyler Harris. He was upset about playing time and sat out this year after a transfer. If he hadn't he gets to play 15-20 minutes this season and is probably starting in '13-'14.

Wasn't part of the Tyler Harris thing his dad being a bitch about his playing time?
And I was telling Roflpack the same thing earlier. He could have stayed here and already be declaring for the draft if he really wanted, but instead he's at fucking powerhouse Providence. He didn't play much here because he wasn't all the great, same with Purvis.

^^^Given his personality, it actually makes PERFECT sense.
When you've been told your entire life that you're going to be a star/College starter/NBA draft pick, you become entirely convinced it's going to happen. At 18/19, you think you know everything and that those who don't know you, are either dead wrong or 'just don't understand.'
The thing is that Purvis had PLENTY of opportunities to start and prove himself, but he was totally inconsistent and not even half the impact player TJ Warren was. He's still in this delusional mode where nobody gave him a chance or sees how good he thinks he is, so he thinks everyone else is the problem.
Sorry kid, but you aren't nearly as good as everyone told you you'd be. One and done my ass.

Legit reasons to transfer:
1) You aren't good enough (or the coach is too dumb to play you) to crack the rotation at a school. Examples: Josh Davis type player who could be a major player elsewhere not really getting consistent enough minutes to develop. It's a stretch to include a Deshawn Painter type here for lack of huge minutes, but still SOMEWHAT understandable since a lot of people hate sitting on the bench.
2) You kinda suck and are taking inordinate amounts of shit from fans/coaches. Larry Drew II is a good example. I don't think anyone can blame him for wanting out.
3) Program turmoil. Serious turmoil. Sanctions, probations, suspensions, coach firings, etc. At the very least the type of stuff going on at UCLA recently.
4) Team just absolutely sucks and that isn't what you thought you were getting into. Wake Forest for example. Losing sucks.
5) You're way too good and outgrew your program. A Seth Curry type player who can be a leader on a tournament level team or even title contender.
6) Philosophical change in coaching style/change in coaches. This is more of a factor in football but I could see some scenarios (imagine Jason Williams or Kyrie Irving being asked to play in the princeton offense) where it makes sense to transfer.
7) Being recruited over. Think Wiltjer in Kentucky or even Tyler Lewis here. If you've put in your time on the bench for 1-2 years and then they recruit a 5* athlete at your position and it's fairly clear you won't get your opportunity it can make sense to transfer.
Illegitimate reasons to transfer:
You're a little punk bitch who isn't that good who will probably get 30 minutes and almost definitely start for a legitimate tournament level team for the next three seasons. Also, you're a potential NBA prospect who might really kill their chances by wasting a year in basketball purgatory.
For every Roshown McLeod who grows into an NBA player after transferring there are 20 who completely stagnate during their season off and lose an invaluable year of player development. A better option would probably be to just go pro now and see where you land. He could still make $50k somewhere probably and develop his game and try to crack the NBA via the Josh Powell route (and countless others).
I just don't get sitting out a year and stunting your development while not getting paid when you have a golden opportunity in front of you. 4/2/2013 1:10:59 AM |
