Fowler: Okay, when can you start?

The problem is we have an extremely retarded fan base with a deluded and warped sense of reality.
Many were convinced that the big names in college basketball would come knocking on our door ready to take the job. If Fowler went after a mid major coach, the retards would have been in an uproar that we didn't go after Barnes, Calipari, etc. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I really don't care whether Lee Fowler stays or goes. He's not the one coaching this horrible basketball team.
Let's see how long the Sidney Lowe experiment continues. I'm eager to see what the next tagline is going to be after the "we don't have a PG", "Herb's players suck", "he doesn't have his type of players" excuses dry out.
If he severely underachieved with the current talent we have, I'm not convinced he can win us a title with 5 McD's on the court. A good coach is able to get the most out of the talent level he has.3/14/2008 8:50:52 AM |

“I didn’t start him because he broke a team rule and he understood that. That is part of being a team and having rules,” Lowe said. “He didn’t do it intentionally, but he did it. You just have to deal with that.”
at least tell us what he did wrong. damn. it sounds like you're covering your ass.
here's one easy bit of advice lowe... (too late now) have running practices where you run sprints and fast plays. run their asses off until they look like they are about to faint.
and then make them sit on the court for an hour and do nothing but shoot and shoot and shoot to improve their accuracy
3 pointers/free throws (for the shooters)
free throws/ short jumpers (for the larger forwards/centers non shooters)
or at least watch some of your recruits play and shoot before putting them on the team...
b/c javi/johnson suck at shooting, and your already good shooters got fucking pathetic as the year went on. 3/16/2008 1:21:23 AM |

regardless, the shooting continued getting worse up until and including our last game.
it's factual that he hasn't encouraged better shooting throughout the year. 3/16/2008 1:32:12 AM |

You're assuming what does and doesn't happen at practice.
And no, the shooting did not continue to get worse, nor was it the primary reason we sucked so much dick. I think we were 6th or 7th in the conference in shooting percentage.

no, i never said it was the primary reason we suck and no, i never assumed he doesn't teach shooting at practice
however, it is blatantly obvious that he didn't spend enough time helping each player improve their shot. costner? much worse than last year shooting. fells, the same. grant, probably worse as well, mccauley.. yep, got worse, javi gonzalez? haha i mean it's hard to not improve from where he started, and hell even johnson showed no improvement and could barely get a point a game. ferguson? he finally got some PT which helped him improve, still, can't make a layup...
so you really think lowe is pushing better shooting enough? then plz, feel free to compliment them on it. 3/16/2008 1:44:17 AM |

More from Sidney’s show:
Farnold was denied a redshirt (probably old news, apologies if so) … but they are still trying to get him an extra year on a medical hardship
A caller asked about Brandon’s performance this past season; Sidney’s response: “Teams paid way more attention to him … He may have gotten worn down mentally throughout the season … For next season, 1st thing Brandon has to get into great shape - drop a few pounds … Work on his shot and get it back to form … Rediscover his strengths … he has so many of them”
“Conditioning / strength starts NEXT WEEK” … (if I heard that correctly)
“The ‘83 team got better during the (previous) summer … we worked out and played every day … that’s why our guys are starting back to work next week” " |

Pre-Lowe: NCAA tourney appearances. Lowe Year One: Good NIT showing. Lowe Year Two: We didn't even make it into the CBI.
So what should Lowe shoot for next year if he wants to keep his job? Bare minimum... Another good NIT showing and a winning record? Any sign of improvement at all?
What are our standards with this coach, NCSU fanbase? 3/19/2008 12:20:39 AM |

Well, he's "proved" he can take a team to the ACC championship game, place 10th in conference, and make a solid run in the NIT. But with a supposed more talented group of guys he's at the bottom of the conference, run out of the gym in the ACC Tourney, and no postseason. Since this team hasn't really proved to me they can do anything, I would guess around 8th in conference and a couple wins in the NIT would be improvement on this year. Goal is always to get to the NCAA's though, but I doubt it's possible with these guys right now.
We're not even in the postseason, but College Gameday can still bitch about how Villanova was robbed by the refs in the Old Spice Tourney game against us.

I was browsing a wiki last night and I noticed something very interesting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NC_State_Wolfpack_men%27s_basketball
There a number of similarities between Sidney Lowe's first two seasons as head basketball coach, and those of Les Robinson. For starters, both coaches had a decent season their first year. Robinson was riding on the success of Valvano while Lowe had a decent team left over from Sendek. Then both teams had a terrible second season with a losing record and both were near the bottom of the acc. Both coaches were also former students of state and affilliated with the basketball team. Robinson continued the rest of his career as coach near the bottom of the acc with a losing record every year until he resigned as head coach.
I know all of this is complete speculation, but I'm hoping the similarities end after the first two seasons. 3/22/2008 1:31:11 PM |

lowes first two seasons have been closer to sendeks first two seasons rather than robinsons
both had crappy first seasons finishing in the bottom third of the conference. the year was salvaged by wins over carolina durting the season and duke in the acc tournament only to lose to unc in the acc championship game, both made the nit tournament where they lost to wvu
the second season was viewed as a setback as neither made quite the steps they had their first season 3/22/2008 2:08:16 PM |

I had another one of those..."so what happened to State this year...weren't ya'll suppose to be good??" conversations today.
I'm so fucking tired of having that conversation this year. I'm almost getting to the point where I reply with a "I don't really care"...because I've honestly almost gotten to that point. Even when we had Les I never felt like I was close to that. I still loved the players back then and it always seemed like they played hard. This year wasn't just disappointing from a results standpoint...it was disappointing as a program that seemed like it had come so far only to take a ginormous step back. We lost all respectability we had gained in the past 5 or 6 years. The team just seemed like it didn't care and I almost "hated" our players. I never thought I would feel like this.
What a horrible fucking year. 3/22/2008 2:12:49 PM |

false
while the records, performance in the acc tourney and postseason berth/performances in sendek's and lowe's first seasons were near identical, the personnel had no comparison. the players that sendek started with were on a far lower level than those with which lowe and robinson began.
as for the second season, while sendek made no great leaps forward, he certainly did not move backwards and even took a few tiny steps forward, winning more acc games than his previous year. in contrast, lowe made a great step backward by winning fewer acc games, finishing lower (LAST) in the conference, finishing below .500 overall and, as such, staying home in the postseason.
in reality, lowe's first two seaons were not all that comparable to either robinson or sendek, but if you look at the personnel, you have to say it trends closer to robinson than to sendek.
as for all the discussion of sean miller, i am not sure what leads anyone to believe that miller would have any interest in this job after the way our fans treated his old boss.3/22/2008 9:17:04 PM |

Normally it is not a good idea to practice shooting when you are very tired, creates bad habits in not holding true to a form that is reproducible game in and game out, then you end up with shooters who are either on or way off. That the different between great shooters and good shooters ( Hate to say it but the difference between say JJ Reddick and Fells)
But I will deff agree 100% with what your saying.
