Does 1.5 not have where you can go into the applications part of the settings and stop a service or force close an app? 6/11/2010 1:31:42 PM |

ok so i know this is probably a basic question, but on my Evo how do I get facebook events (incoming messages, wall posts, status replies etc) to show up in my Android notifications? I've seen it on other peoples phones, just don't know how to configure it. 6/11/2010 1:40:22 PM |
BigEgo Not suspended 24374 Posts user info edit post |
it does, but which is easier:
1)pulling down the notification bar, hitting the task manager that sits in it, one clicking the pandora app and it going away 2)hitting the home key, either finding the settings icon on whatever home screen you put it on or hitting the menu button then settings, scrolling down to hit applications, hitting manage applications, waiting for it to load (if your system is hanging because pandora is fucking up it can take forever), scrolling down to pandora (which if you have a lot of apps can also take a while, scroll down after that loads and hit the force stop button
^use the standard facebook application and just leave it running. it can be buggy on some phones, but it usually works well.
you can also do it with sms] 6/11/2010 1:41:53 PM |

I guess manually killing misbehaving apps would be a legit reason for having a task killer but that's still one more app running.
^^ facebook notifications on android is a crapshoot. The only reliable way is just to have facebook send an email to your gmail account. Think the actual facebook app notifications are only messages, pokes, event invites and friend requests. 6/11/2010 1:57:09 PM |
BigEgo Not suspended 24374 Posts user info edit post |
that's pretty much all I use a task killer for. for apps that open when they shouldn't, don't close when they should, and fuck up. poorly designed apps can still be fun to play with, but if you don't manage them properly they will fuck up your battery life and performance. 6/11/2010 2:01:38 PM |

synapse, open the facebook app and then menu > Settings... I dont use it (no facebook for me) but pretty sure thats where you can set the notifications. The FB app is not perfect.. still a work in progress in my opinion. You may just want to set up a widget if the notifications are not working well.
Task Killers are NOT needed for Android. If you have an app that is doing something crazy, email the developer. 6/11/2010 2:37:19 PM |

i have a few apps that were using CPU so I use a task killer for those. even ones that don't there is a noticeable performance difference without an app killer. 6/11/2010 2:46:31 PM |

facebook in generally is pretty buggy with the android. the official app is pretty bad on most phones. notifications worked great on my backflip, but the widget was pathetic. the motoblur happenings widget >>>> the facebook widget.
of course for whatever reason my facebook inbox doesn't work well with motoblur, i've gotten 1 of the last 20 messages actually deliver to my phone. 6/11/2010 5:05:24 PM |

Quote : | "^if you can wait as much as a month or two it looks like AT&T will get another android, this one a HTC. There's like 4 rumors about one right now. Old ones are that it'd be the Desire (which would be similar to the Incredible, but slightly better), or Legend (which would be neat, but nothing special). Newer rumors say a smaller android phone (~2.8" screen) with a snapdragon processor (rumored to be the HTC Aria or Liberty), or the newest rumor:
http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/06/08/htc-intruder-the-mystery-att-android-phone/
a 3.5" inch screen on that
Per AT&T's facebook page they are going to announce something soon Re: Android" |
If I was sure it was 3.5", I might be able to wait for it, but if I knew for sure that AT&T would be getting the Galaxy S or the Streak by July, then I'd wait. I just sold my old 2Gs and my 3GS, so I'm "phoneless." I need to get something unless they soon come out definitively saying they're going to get one of these phones. Otherwise, my choice is between paying the ETF and switching to Sprint for the Evo, or buying a Nexus One and waiting it out.
If the Evo had a Super-AMOLED screen, I'd just make the jump, but I'm worried that I'll want to switch back to AT&T if/when the Galaxy S (or the Dell Thunder) come out. Right now I get a corporate discount from my wife's old job, but we'd lose it if we left. Decisions, decisions...
I'm leaning toward just getting the Nexus One and waiting it out though. With a Zagg on it, hopefully I'd get close to full price when I go to sell it, minus eBay fees.
Quote : | "That's great and all, but AT&T's coverage blows loads of ass." |
Funny, I've never really had an issue with it. I used to have Verizon, and in many places, AT&T has been better for me. The only places I notice where it's worse is in underground areas or tall buildings.
The other thing, for me at least, is that I only pay $115/mo for 2 iPhones with the old unlimited Data plans. We don't even use the 500 min/mo we get between the 2 of us, so the 1600 under Sprint would be useless. We also don't really text. We'd pay $30/mo more under Sprint, although with Sprint we might be able to cut our Vonage plan and only be paying $13/mo more then.
Quote : | "3 - 30 day money back guarantee, get ALL your $ back if you don't like anything. don't even have to pay for the plan 4 - great insurance plan. for the evo it's only $7 per month and only a $100 replacement fee " |
3. Did not know this, thanks!
4. Are there not manufacturer warranties for at least a year like with the iPhone? I only had solid dumbphones before my first iPhone, so never had to really worry about phones breaking down, and I'm pretty careful with them so never damaged one myself.
Quote : | "On a side note, I love this chrome to phone plugin." |
I don't get the point of that, why not just use ReadItLater or Instapaper (assuming they have Android apps)?
On a side note, when we went to look at the Evo yesterday, some lady was on her cell hollering at the Sprint customer service from inside the store. She was going on about having spent 10 hr on the phone with them trying to get them to repair her phones like they "said they would."
Bad sign? 6/11/2010 5:06:50 PM |

The coverage itself has never been a *huge* problem for me, but if i had a buck for every one of my calls bellsouth/cingular/at&t has dropped over the last 10 years i'd have a sizable of a chunk of change. hell i could take a nice vacation if i just included all the times i've looked down at an iphone to see 'Call Failed.' bastards.
