The '09 Playoffs were when Maurice slightly tweaked Laviolette's system. The '02 Stanley Cup Run was a serious over-achieving case.
With Paul Maurice at the helm, we can count on this team fading back into the same oblivion that got us Eric Staal after '03. We are never prepared, and only show up to compete in what feels like every one out of five games. Unfortunately, without a complete change of leadership off the ice, I don't see us going out of the country club for help any time soon.
After Maurice we'll see Ron Francis, then probably Jeff Daniels (granted he's the one I've got the most hope for). I'd love to see us go out and get a coach that wants to do something and keep people accountable. Tim Gleason would be in the press box with his uninspired play for the past few games.

here's Mo's teams PP #s the last 5 seasons compared to the league avg (full seasons only): '10-11: 15.8 (avg: 18) '09-10: 17 (avg: 18.2) '07-08: 17.7 (avg. 17.7) '06-07: 17.7 (avg. 17.6) '03-04: 13.8 (avg. 16.4)
At his best, he's been at the helm of an average power play, and that was aided by having Kaberle and McCabe at the points. 2 out of Lavi's 3 seasons in town, we had an above average PP. By no means am I asking for Lavi back (mainly b/c that's never going to happen) but something needs to be done about the PP. going 3-61 is fucking atrocious! There's too much thinking going on, and not enough reacting and moving.
Watching the way TB operated on their 5-3 last night was a thing of beauty; starting at the point, moving the puck down and having the point men pinch down to the tops of the circles. There's too many guys looking for the perfect pass rather than putting a body in front of the net and Holmstrom-ing it up.
Before the season, my expectations were low based on the amount of young/inexperienced players we have and had you told me we'd be in a playoff hunt, i'd have been pleasantly surprised. While we're not out of it yet, I'm disappointed by the way we've pissed away good opportunities for points in the last week but more disappointed by the lack of progress any young player not named Skinner has shown. Tlusty has been alright, McBain has been decent (which is about as good as any of our d-men), but the callups haven't been given an opportunity to do anything with their time wearing the sightless eye. 5-7 shifts a game isn't going to give players a time to pick up the pace of NHL hockey, particularly when it's an offensive player like Boychuk or Dalpe being forced to play a checking game alongside Dalpe.
So many issues with coaching; and I know I don't have the answers, but seeing the problems is fucking easy.

GO SENS tonight. An Ottawa win and if we can beat the sabers Tuesday, back to almost 50 / 50.

If we lose the two games against Buffalo and Toronto on Tuesday and Wednesday, I better see some call-ups and the young ones given some significant time with the big club. Samson, Boychuk, Dalpe and Bowman all deserve big minutes. I don't care who you sit or scratch (probably those you're not going to keep after this season) but make it happen. 3/13/2011 6:46:19 PM |

Issues I have with our coaching is that we really don't do one thing really well. With Lavi we were all offense, but he wouldn't change the system when the league and the Hurricanes players changed. (although he did change his system once he got to PHI) In '09 Maurice took the all offense Lavi system, installed some defense and saw some success. Since then we've had all Maurice.
I just want to see Staal come alive and the offense pick up for the final few weeks. Making the playoffs with a young team and with all the ASG buzz in Raleigh this season would be a nice accomplishment. 3/13/2011 11:43:34 PM |

I am so sick of watching our pp shots getting blocked, every single time. We have to be the most blocked team in the nhl. I like that we are trying to put shots on goal, but it looks like the same setup, just with more shots and less passing. We need more movement, not six guys standing around in front of net 3/15/2011 8:08:56 PM |

Cam stood on his head last night and saved our ass.
Realistically though, even if we do make the playoffs, if Maurice doesn't switch from this bullshit modified umbrella on the powerplay, we can forget it.
The powerplay is redefining failure and he does NOTHING to change it. I still don't understand why we hired this guy (AGAIN). He's not the future of the Hurricanes and has been a failure just about everywhere he's coached. 3/16/2011 10:16:22 AM |

What would make an entire fanbase take it upon themselves to be complete assholes at a game to another group of fans? There have been 'Canes fans who don't want to go to games against the Sabres because they don't want beer spilled on them and people yelling at them the entire game or just because they don't want their kids to be around Sabres fans. What dickholes. 3/16/2011 2:45:04 PM |

Despite the late goal I was very encouraged by that period. Power play seemed to have life and guys we going hard for the puck. Hopefully this doesn't turn into one of those games we dominate but somehow come out with a loss on a few soft goals. 3/16/2011 7:51:00 PM |
