we've forced the ball into the post to a fault at times this year and we don't do it there? we killed them all game down there. give it to leslie and have cjw or painter as his second option for a jumper if he can't score 1/28/2012 10:04:42 PM |

-1 for a terribly play, but no problem with calling the TO. Even when Herb would call a TO to set up nothing, it was still the right move to call the TO. Herb can't help it that he sucked at the end game. Doesn't mean you don't try to improve. we'd be bitching at Gott if he didn't call the TO. Hell, even if he didn't call it and we won, there would still be people saying "well, he probably should have called a TO, but I'm happy we won anyway," which tells you that it was the right move to call it

I don't think the TO was bad. The team needs to plays with a sense of urgency. Why is it we seem to turn it on only in the last 2piece min of every game. If we would play with that level of intensity the entire game (like UNC/Duke do on a regular basis) we would win alot more games. 1/29/2012 10:30:47 AM |

I have no problem with the play. It was a good pick and would have generated an easy shot had Brown driven inside the big man that helped out on the screen. That was the key. When the help on the pick came out brown should have crossed over and driven in the paint. Brown could have passed the ball down low or taken the mid range J. Instead he tried to go around the big man and ended up getting push outside.
Play was fine, just executed poorly. The defense decided to overplay and switch on the pick and we didn't execute. 1/29/2012 11:11:07 AM |

That argument could have probably been made for every one of Sendek's disaster end game plays. I'm sure those plays were all magical, but if the players can't execute it successfully regularly then it wasn't a good play. I still think Gottfried is a good end game coach, but there is no way you can be happy with a play that results in Zo throwing a fadeaway three with two guys on him. 1/29/2012 11:17:41 AM |

but, what have we seen that makes us believe he's a great end of game coach?

The people that would have complained with no timeout are just people who don't know basketball. You only call a timeout in that situation if you have a dominant one on one offensive player who you need to make sure you get the ball to or you're playing against a weak defensive team. Calling the timeout allowed Virginia to setup their defense and thats when they are killer. We only have one guy who can create a jumpshot and he was doubled. I was surprised we even got off a heave because I was pretty sure we would have a disasterous play and probably throw the ball away. Terrible TO. 1/29/2012 11:45:50 AM |

^^^^^They execute pick and rolls all the time. You want to put the ball in your playmaker's hands. The result of that play was 100% Zo's fault. Its a read play where you have to react to what the defense does. He reacted poorly. He should have driven inside.
Maybe you think there should be some magical play drawn up that results in a wide open lay up. Fact is the defense is trying too. And when you don't execute, then you end up throwing up a airball 3 with two defenders in your face.

Agree 100%. You don't call that timeout against that defense.

There is a reason you are not a head basketball coach.
Coach called timeout because he said everyone was looking at him wanting to know what they should do. He didn't like that, so he called a TO to get everyone organized. He said he normally does not like to call a TO, would rather let them play, that's his style, but in this particular case, he didn't like where his teams head was so he called it.
He also said, it's one of those damned if you, damned if you don't. If you win, everyone says you made the right call. You lose, everyone says you didn't.2/7/2012 5:14:08 PM |
