OK, remember that new IT guy I mentioned who started every response with, "Well I can try to help, but it's Windows...there's only so much I can do!!!"
Well....over the last week he has had to remotely log-in to someone's PC in order to fix something that they emailed the HelpDesk about. Every time he has done it, he's just hopped right on. No email that says "Hey I'm coming on", no shout across the office "Hey Kelly, I'm getting on your computer"...no warning...NOTHING.
As a result, every time he has done this (twice just this morning to the same guy) that person lets out a shriek "HEY WHAT ARE YOU DOING GUY???"
I mean, he hasn't done it to me yet, but I seriously want to email his superiors (in our main office in Indy) and be like "TELL HIM TO WARN A BROTHER!"
It's just rude to hop on like that. He's in IT, he should know better.

At my current job they can just start moving your mouse around and doing stuff from wherever they are! No warning whatsoever. I have no idea how its set up.
The company I was with pre-merge had VNC but at least with that the icon changed colors and you had to accept for them to be all in your stuff. 8/26/2009 10:32:19 AM |

there are a lot of versions of VNC.. a lot of them don't require the user to say OK to being remote controlled. (although most have an option for it somewhere) 8/26/2009 10:38:29 AM |

Haha, at mine we use LogMeIn and the people get a tiny pop-up saying that Admin has logged in but no one ever notices it so when the mouse starts moving it freaks people out.
One of the better logmein features is that it can lock the user out while we fix whatever issue, but I prefer to work and let the people see what I'm doing.

One of the managers in my office came to work this morning wearing jeans. He says he "thought it was Friday". I was angered and annoyed, until the Super Bad Office Manager Director head honcho guy sent out the following email:
Quote : | "Ladies and Gentlemen: Someone doesn't know what day it is today, so as far as I'm concerned he is fair game and you can pick on him all you want. Stating things like the following is acceptable: -Since today is Friday for you I guess you should probably wear formal attire tomorrow...??? -Since today is Friday for you I guess you will be even later to work tomorrow right? -So, What? Are you going to wear shorts to work tomorrow?
The Door is open, and I give you all permission to let him have it!!!! I'm going to! Michael H." |

why were you "angered and annoyed" that someone forgot which day of the week it was? Or was the ire because he full well knew what day it was and was trying to weasel his way out of dressing nicely?
Times like these I'm glad that my workplaces have all been fairly casual. I can wear jeans any day I want (though sometimes, like today, I wear slacks just because...) And no tie, thankfully. Every so often I'll wish I was in a business that dressed more formally because I'd like an excuse to buy a couple of nice suits etc., but usually those feelings pass in about 10 minutes. 8/27/2009 9:35:29 AM |

hahah this place is awesome. we are all so laid back, it's really the best place i've ever worked. there have been a few emails back and forth poking fun, and the culprit is right along in the mix. he mentioned that he might wear his jean jacket tomorrow.
Quote : | "Or was the ire because he full well knew what day it was and was trying to weasel his way out of dressing nicely? " |
yes, i was annoyed because he knew what day it was and was just pretending he messed up. i mean, if he wasn't a manager he would likely have been asked to go home and change.
we have clients that randomly show up sometimes, so we are business casual (dress pants, collared shirts for guys) except for friday...we wear jeans on friday. i figured most businesses were like that.
in fact, if you wear a tie to work here, people ask you if you've got an interview somewhere 8/27/2009 9:39:16 AM |

ok so let me clarify since Ernie has swooped in to analyze everything i say.
if i had pretended to forget what day it is and wear jeans, my boss would have said "ma'am, please go home and change". only because this is a place of business and clients come by on the regular and we should not be wearing jeans on any day other than friday. however, this guy is a manager and was not asked to go home and change - resulting in my slight anger and annoyance at the situation. so what if he's a manager?
and by laid back, i meant that we all laugh and joke and have fun, but business is business. he should be asked to go home and put on his khakis. but that's just my opinion. meh, i'm only the parking lot monitor - what do i know?

yeah well, i've been here for more than 4 years and i've never known anyone to wear jeans on a day other than friday. so i guess i really don't know if anyone would be asked to go home and change. it's just a guess.
i'd be really fucking embarrassed wearing jeans though on a day when everyone else wasn't. especially here - these guys can be brutal with the jokes. 8/27/2009 9:50:13 AM |

There's a sliding scale with being casual
Inevitably people start to stretch the boundaries until everyone starts coming in dressed like Jeff Lebowski
With suits, there's still some room for creativity and personal expression, but everyone is still gonna look at least somewhat decent 8/27/2009 9:57:29 AM |
