I'm not so sure we all do. I still see comparison posts to Withey and hopeful posts about him improving in the offseason and posts suggesting that he should start next year over the freshmen.4/30/2013 10:06:13 AM |
KillaB All American 1652 Posts user info edit post |
My hope is that he can actually provide a useful body during the games. I am not hoping for any real contribution from him, just someone to give some good minutes, play some defense, eat up space, and rebound. Offensively, I only want him to pass the ball and set screens.
Ultimately, if the freshman can come in and contribute right away, we're better off than depending on TBDV. Anyone thinking he's going to have some magical turn around though is clinging to a pipe dream. If he's the 8th man in our rotation and can contribute some of the things I listed above, then he's made a "big improvement" in my mind.
I'd be happy if during his time on the court, I didn't realize he was out there. It'd be an improvement over this past season when I knew he was out there because he looked so terrible and incapable at playing D1 basketball.

if you're still seeing posts like that (i don't recall any in at least the last year), then it's safe to dismiss that poster as an idiot.

It is far fetched. There is 100% certainty Washington and Anya are better than Vandy. Readiness isn't an issue. Jordan is no where close to being "ready".

Were you also 100% certain that Howell would only ever be an average back-up, and predicting him to play 30 mpg or be a double-double guy or be a great rebounder was ludicrous?

You are clearly hoping for too much. This is what we all have hoped for him since he got here and he just can't do it. Funny tweeter, seemingly nice guy, not a good basketball player.
Even if Washington and Anya ARE as bad as Vandy (not likely), they should still see the floor over him because they will be here for the next four years and he won't.4/30/2013 11:13:42 AM |

If Vandy hasn't learned to actually be in the proper position on the floor at either end after four years in the program why would anyone possibly think he might in year five?

Quote : | "NC State added to its Rivals.com No. 15-ranked recruiting class Monday with a verbal commitment from senior power forward Lennard Freeman of Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy.
Freeman officially visited Pittsburgh over the weekend, ending on Saturday, and then played in the Capital Classic all-star game Sunday with former Team Takeover teammate BeeJay Anya of Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic, who signed with NC State last November.
Freeman, who was back home with his family in Washington, D.C., called NC State coach Mark Gottfried late Sunday night to let him know he was ready to join the Wolfpack family. After arriving in Charlotte from his flight Monday — to make his way back to Mouth of Wilson — he made sure to call the other colleges and then shared his secret on Twitter, and confirmed with The Wolfpacker.
Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy senior power forward Lennard Freeman picked NC State on Monday. "I'm speechless after watching things like this [playing at NC State] on TV, and then to actually play for them next year, I don't even know what to say," Freeman said. "The opportunity is there with C.J. [Leslie] and [Richard] Howell leaving, and there is an open spot. They don't have many bigs."
Gottfried and assistant coach Rob Moxley watched Freeman play with Oak Hill Academy and closed hard to get their future power forward.
"Coach Moxley and Coach Gottfried, I have a good relationship with them," Freeman said. "The fan support down there is crazy.
"After the Pittsburgh visit, I just sat down and talked to my AAU coaches and high school coach and family. I was like, 'I just want to make this happen.'"
Freeman officially visited NC State the weekend of April 12, and picked the Wolfpack over the Panthers, Villanova, Seton Hall, UAB and DePaul. He also unofficially visited NC State Feb. 19 for the Florida State at NC State game.
"That was my second visit and I didn't know for real about NC State," Freeman said. "I wanted to give everybody an equal chance. I was still debating prep school too.
"Oak Hill has prepped me for being away from my parents. I know I have to get bigger, stronger and get more mature. I'm going to be a freshman playing with grown people now, but I think I can adapt pretty quick."
Freeman attended St. John's College in Washington, D.C., before the 17-year-old made the move to Oak Hill Academy. He originally pondered the idea of doing a post-graduate year and move to the class of 2014, but reconsidered in early April. He plans to major in business management.
"People were telling me that I couldn't get any bigger than that [with the college offers]," Freeman said. "They said I was more mature than I thought. I just said, "All right, I'll just give up on prep school.' I don't know what could happen next year, maybe I'd lose my scholarships.
"My mom is pretty excited about it. If I'm happy, she's happy. She just wants me to earn a degree."
Freeman joins Anya, Hampton (Va.) High point guard Anthony Barber, Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy power forward Kyle Washington and New Mexico Junior College shooting guard Desmond Lee, in the Wolfpack's class of 2013. LSU transfer wing Ralston Turner is also eligible next year as a rising redshirt junior.
"Lennard Freeman is a late pickup who I'm sure NC State coaches are hoping can give some spot minutes early in his career," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Eric Bossi said. "A three-star power forward, Freeman is a slightly undersized four-man who is pretty athletic, has good length and plays with a pretty good motor. He isn't particularly well known as a scorer, but watching him over the past few years, he has looked pretty willing to do the dirty work and help out on the glass and play physical defense." " |

If he is undersized at the four he won't be playing the five, how does that really help us out with the TBDV conundrum? We only have Anya and Vandy as true centers, with Warren maybe giving us a few minutes there. Is Washington getting time at the 5 as well? 4/30/2013 11:51:12 AM |

He didn't average a double-double that year. I clearly stated he could be legit under a real coaching staff. He turned out better than even the most unbalanced optimist could have hoped for. His unparalleled dedication to improvement made him my favorite player over the last 20 years.

Gottfried doesn't really differentiate between the 4 and the 5 in his offense, and he has shown that he couldn't care less about defensive mismatches.
Don't worry about a "true center". There are only a handful of those in college basketball each year. Between our 4 pure post players and Warren, Gott will start whoever runs his offense best. 4/30/2013 12:28:50 PM |

Our 8-9 man rotation next year is going to seem like a 12 man roatation after all these years of having so little depth. If everyone can buy into team defense and support Warren a bit on offense it could be a surprise year... Seems we do better with no expectations anyway.
Gott did a good job over the past few weeks adding some pieces too. 4/30/2013 12:40:01 PM |

Nope, he pretty much turned out how anyone with a pair of eyes expected.
5/4.5 in 13 min
7.5/6.5 in 18 min
what the hell did you expect when he played 30 min?
the only area he exceeded expectations was his FG% but most of that was built up against really terrible teams early in the season when he was shooting like 70%4/30/2013 1:59:04 PM |

Uchebo is a guy who put up some very good stats as a freshman at Chippola (12 & 12), before taking a medical redshirt last year. He has 3 years of eligibility. I would imagine that if he's healthy, he's more prepared for the college game than any of our freshman bigs.
I'm not sure if Uchebo is seriously considering us this time around, but I'd love to see him here. Anya / Washington / Freeman / Uchebo would be our greatest haul of big men since Sendek pulled Inge, Thornton, Kelly and Corndog in his inaugural class. I think we all remember how they turned out... [Cue video of Thornton dunking over Mardesich, followed by a video of Inge scowling and elbowing people in the head while Corndog cheers from the bench]
